Trivia

  • He was born on New Year's Day, 1922.
  • During the entire time Hollings served with Thurmond from 1966 to 2003, Hollings was the Junior Senator from South Carolina. It was only after Thurmond retired on January 3, 2003, that Hollings became the Senior Senator from South Carolina, serving in that capacity for only (exactly) two years, until January 3, 2005.
  • Served with Strom Thurmond, who was born in 1902, and died in 2003, age 100 (Thurmond was born almost 20 years before Hollings, and Hollings died more than 16 years after Thurmond). Both Thurmond and Hollings were married twice, both were governors of South Carolina before becoming U.S. Senators from South Carolina, both had extremely long length of service in the Senate (44 years plus for Thurmond, and 38 years plus for Hollings), and as concurrently serving Senators, they were the oldest lived combined pair from any state, living more than a combined 197 years.
