- During the entire time Hollings served with Thurmond from 1966 to 2003, Hollings was the Junior Senator from South Carolina. It was only after Thurmond retired on January 3, 2003, that Hollings became the Senior Senator from South Carolina, serving in that capacity for only (exactly) two years, until January 3, 2005.
