His father Ernst Hinterseer won the Olympic gold medal in slalom at the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley. Hansi Hinterseer was encouraged to learn alpine skiing when he was a child. At the age of 14 he was accepted into the Austrian national team. In the 1972/73 season he celebrated his first victory in a World Cup slalom race in Anchorange, USA. At the age of 18, Hinterseer won the overall World Cup. In total, Hinterseer won six World Cup races. Among other things, he won the Hahnenkamm race on the Ganslerhang in 1974.

On January 27, 1974, Hinterseer became the winner of the World Cup slalom in Kitzbühel, Austria. At the 1974 World Cup in St. Moritz he won the silver medal. On February 25, 1975, he became the winner of the giant slalom in Furano, Japan. He won his last World Cup race in the slalom on December 21, 1975 in Schladming, Austria. At the beginning of the 1980s, Hansi Hinterseer retired from active professional sports. From 1984 he worked for the Austrian broadcaster ORF as a presenter for live alpine ski broadcasts. At the same time, he became a frequent guest on sports programs.

Hinterseer married in 1986. He became the father of two daughters. In 1994, Hinterseer began a second career as a singer of folk songs and hits. It was produced by Jack White. He also celebrated success as a presenter of entertainment programs. As a show master he was awarded the Golden "Romy" in 1998. In his musical career, Hinterseer was awarded the "Golden Tuning Fork" seven times between 1997 and 2004. In 2001, 2003 and 2006 he was nominated for the "Amadeus Austrian Music Award". In 1998, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 he received a "Crown of Folk Music".

In 2009 and 2010 he published the title "Come with Me!" and "I just love you."
