Former child stars Macaulay Culkin and Kieran Culkin have come a long way since the two shared the screen in Home Alone. The latter is now an Academy Award winner, and seeing the major moment happen on TV made the former very emotional.
At the Academy Awards on Sunday, Kieran Culkin won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Jesse Eisenberg's acclaimed film A Real Pain. During the stream for Vanity Fair's Oscars afterparty (per Entertainment Weekly), Macaulay and his fiancee, Brenda Song, were asked if they had watched any of the show. While Song noted, "Of course," Culkin clarified that he only watched the segment where Best Supporting Actor was announced. He went on to reveal that seeing his brother get the win made him cry.

Hollywood’s obsession with established characters and stories didn’t start with endless iterations of Marvel superheroes. From the earliest days of sitcoms, producers tried to cash in on the popularity of hit comedy movies by translating them into weekly television shows. But except for rare occasions — namely, M*A*S*H and What We Do in the Shadows — the imitations rarely live up to the originals.
Here are seven terrible sitcoms that wasted the goodwill of the movies they were based on…
1 Fast Times
Hey, everybody, look who’s back! It’s… Mr. Hand? Ray Walston was a champ as a fed-up teacher in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but a reboot without Sean Penn or Phoebe Cates couldn’t help but disappoint. Critics complained that the network TV version took the movie’s realistically horny characters and “sanitized them into blandness.”
2 Uncle Buck

John Candy was hands-down one of the greatest comedic performers of all-time. But after starring in classics like Uncle Buck, Spaceballs and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Candy’s final film job was playing the drunken wagoneer in the disappointing Western parody Wagon’s East.
Or was it?
While Candy died during the making of Wagon’s East, Michael Moore’s Candy-starring Canadian Bacon actually was released even later, due to a delay caused by distribution problems. But on IMDb, Candy’s last credited film role is in 1996’s The Magic 7. Which begs the question: What the fuck is The Magic 7?
Reportedly, The Magic 7 was an environmentally-conscious children’s movie that combined live-action scenes and animated segments. The production boasted a wildly eclectic cast of megastars, including Michael J. Fox, Demi Moore, Meryl Streep, the late Madeline Kahn, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Bette Midler.

To this day, one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in the history of comedy is the death of John Candy. The Uncle Buck star was just 43 years old when he succumbed to a heart attack while filming the Western spoof Wagon’s East.
Making his passing all the sadder is the sense that Candy clearly had a lot more to contribute to the entertainment world — even beyond the last few minutes of Wagon’s East, which were unconvincingly stitched together using old takes and early ‘90s computer technology.
Candy’s life is now the subject of a new biography by Paul Myers (brother of Mike), who previously tackled the subject of iconic Canadian comedians in the book The Kids in the Hall: One Dumb Guy. Myers’ John Candy: A Life in Comedy doesn’t come out until October, but the author recently chatted with People about the project, and suggested...

After spending the '80s and early '90s becoming the pre-eminent action star of his generation and feuding with Sylvester Stallone over the title, Arnold Schwarzenegger spent the latter half of the '90s trying to prove he could front charming family-friendly fare -- and wouldn't you know it, he could. Of course, a man who hailed from a small Austrian township and conquered bodybuilding, married a Kennedy, became a movie star, and launched a successful career in U.S. politics was never really going to struggle with something as trivial as a career rebrand. So, '90s kids were treated to all manner of surprisingly decent family comedy, from "Kindergarten Cop" to the Christmas favorite "Jingle All the Way."

The company Kino Lorber previously announced that they will be releasing John Candy’s 80s comedy, Summer Rental, on 4K Blu-ray in January. The boutique label has now announced that the following month another beloved John Candy movie will be having a new physical video remastering. Blu-ray.com has revealed that Uncle Buck will get its own Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray release on February 18. This film was a much bigger hit for Candy and is seen as one of his best movies. This is also the film that would give Hughes the idea to write Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin in mind.
The movie stars John Candy, Amy Madigan, Jean Louisa Kelly, Gaby Hoffmann and Macaulay Culkin. The Description reads, “When Cindy (Elaine Bromka) and her husband, Bob (Garrett M. Since its spectacular debut in 2007, the fan-favorite sitcom The Big Bang Theory continues to attract and entertain audiences all around the globe, with the juggernaut hit going on to become one of the most popular TV shows of all time and launching a lucrative and enduring franchise. Tbbt ran for 12 dazzling seasons and was the recipient of numerous accolades, like 10 Primetime Emmys, with its massive success leading to the development of two knockout spin-offs: Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.
The coming-of-age series Young Sheldon serves as a prequel to Tbbt and chronicles the genius Sheldon Cooper's upbringing in the small Texas town of Medford during the late '80s and '90s. Zoe Perry memorably starred as Sheldon's devoted mother Mary for seven seasons, taking over the role from film and TV great Laurie Metcalf, who sporadically appeared as the character throughout the course of Tbbt.

David Gordon Green found the story of Nutcrackers in his friend's backyard. Well, kind of. Nutcrackers is his warmhearted new holiday dramedy about an uptight businessman (Ben Stiller) whose independent world is upended when his sister and brother-in-law pass away, and he finds himself caring for their four young children on their farm in the immediate aftermath. The roots of Nutcrackers lie in Green's own masterful directorial debut, George Washington, from 25 years ago, where he befriended the second unit cinematographer. As Green explained in a recent MovieWeb interview, the rest is history:
"I've just kept up with her. She dropped out of the movie business and went back to Ohio, where she's a fifth-generation farmer. So she dropped back to take care of the family farm. I've just kept up with her through the years. Then, when I went back to Ohio a couple years ago, I had a...

Nutcrackers marks the return of Ben Stiller in a leading role. He plays Mike, who heads to the heart of Ohio to care for his four rambunctious nephews in the aftermath of his sister and her husband passing away in a tragic car accident. Though initially hesitant, Mike realizes they may be the family he's always needed.
Director David Gordon Green was inspired by real-life brothers - Homer Janson, Ulysses Janson, Arlo Janson, and Atlas Janson - and actually filmed on their family farm. This is the first acting role for all four boys. Green is well known in the horror world for movies like Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween (2018), but is no stranger to comedy either, as he directs and produces The Righteous Gemstones.

In what seems almost like a cleansing ritual after wrestling with studio horror franchises, David Gordon Green’s Nutcrackers sees the director return closer to his indie roots, observing characters that sprout organically from their rural or small-town environments. This cute fish-out-of-water comedy about the unexpected rewards of a found family tries to approximate the naturalism, lyricism and raw emotion of Green’s early works George Washington and All the Real Girls, but it’s too predictably sentimental to have a comparable effect.
The idea came from Green meeting the four spirited young sons of an old friend, and Leland Douglas’ screenplay appears to allow latitude for semi-improvisation from those boys, playing versions of themselves. That gives the film a disarming sincerity that dovetails with Ben Stiller’s sensitive, understated performance as an uptight Chicagoan thrust into the inconvenient role of parent. But the abundance of montages and exuberant slo-mo...

Rian Johnson's Peacock mystery/crime series Poker Face is bringing the star power once again for season two. The Emmy-winning series stars Natasha Lyonne as a woman on the run from the mob, who finds herself in a new place in every episode, inexplicably solving crimes along the way. As was the case last season, an impressive lineup of actors will appear as guest stars in the coming season, including familiar faces from Breaking Bad, Batman Begins, and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.
According to a report by Deadline, season two of Poker Face will feature guest stars Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek), Gaby Hoffmann (Transparent) and Kumail Nanjiani (Only Murders in the Building). Filming for the second season officially began on July 1, and with each episode featuring at least one major guest star, and ten episodes in the first season, it is likely more guest star announcements are coming.

While there are plenty of movies to catch up with during the holiday break, I recommend you make time for The Holdovers. The Alexander Payne-directed comedic drama stars Paul Giamatti in one of his most outstanding roles, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa in his feature film debut. The Holdovers is already available on PVOD, but it’s coming to Peacock on December 29.
Some people enjoy spending holidays alone, but for others, it’s a painful reminder of having no one else to share the merriment and make new memories. In Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti’s Paul Hunham learns the value of opening his heart to a troubled student during a lonely Christmas break. The feature marks a welcomed return for Payne, whose previous directorial effort was for the social satire Downsizing, starring Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau.
Here is the official synopsis for The Holdovers,...

Suzanne Shepherd has sadly died.
The longtime actress, who was best known for her roles in Goodfellas and The Sopranos, has died at the age of 89.
Her death was confirmed by her friend Tom Titone, who wrote on Facebook, “Suzanne Shepherd passed away peacefully very early yesterday morning. She was 89 years old.”
Keep reading to find out more…
“I studied with Suzanne as a young actor. She saw in me what I could not yet see in myself. She introduced me to my husband. She was the officiant to our marriage under a beautiful gazebo in Central Park with a gathering of family and friends. For this, I will always be grateful. She was a huge presence. A Big personality. She roared with life and at it.”
She played Karen’s mother in Goodfellas, and Mary DeAngelis in The Sopranos, along with roles in projects like Lolita, Uncle Buck and Mystic Pizza.

The 1980s has gone down as one of the greatest decades in Hollywood's history, thanks to its great focus on action, adventure and comedy. Many of cinema's most iconic careers were built and flourished during the '80s, with plenty of massive hits stemming from the decade. The decade had a great versatility in genres, star power and styles that continues to please fans decades later.
80's movies and their stars have retained an incredibly dedicated fan base in the modern era, and are still some of the most referenced stories in cinema. Whether it was outrageously cheesy action movies, raunchy comedies or legendary adventure and fantasy movies, many actors helped define the decade. Some of these actors are still riding the success of their '80s careers today. In fact, much of modern cinema is built entirely on '80s nostalgia, both in the stories and the acting talent.

From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. In “Renfield,” an outrageous new take on Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” told from the point of view of the count’s perpetually put-upon manservant (played here by Nicholas Hoult), the notion of being too over-the-top is considered and then hastily breezed by. In the opening sequence alone, an ancient curse is placed on the dark prince; when Dracula is freed he turns into a vaporous mist and explodes a priest from the inside. Then Dracula catches on fire and is turned into a crispy skeleton.
The sequence is telling both for its bold tonal shifts and for the manic approach to action. It’s the type of scene you would say could only be devised and executed by a man well-versed in animation. (The crispy skeleton bit could have been out of an old “Looney Tunes” Roadrunner cartoon.) And you would be right. “Renfield” was brought to life by Chris McKay,...

Many timeless characters spring to mind when invoking the singular John Candy: The affable Del from Planes, Trains And Automobiles, Uncle Buck, or even Barf from Spaceballs. But there is one performance that seems to escape the public consciousness. Though Dan Aykroyd's Nothing But Trouble debuted to a less-than-stellar reception in 1991, Candy's double role in the horror-comedy as a bumbling cop and his silent sister — as well as the film's wholly unique take on camp — make it worthy of a re-watch.

As the holiday season commences, the works of John Hughes are bound to experience a resurgence in popularity. After all, he directed Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, one of the few Thanksgiving movies, and he was also a producer on Home Alone, another staple of the holidays.
Though he was known for many things, Hughes was particularly remarkable for the skill with which he created the figure of the lovable loser. These men (and women) were people who exist on the margins of their respective societies but who, nevertheless, manage to be warm and charming, ultimately worming their way into the viewer’s heart.

Uncle Buck has been widely hailed as a comedy classic, but is it a Christmas movie? Directed by John Hughes, the movie features John Candy in one of his fan-favorite roles as the eponymous Uncle Buck. The cast also includes an early screen appearance by Macaulay Culkin, premiering a year before his breakout role in Home Alone. Despite the term appearing self-explanatory, identifying a true “Christmas movie” has proven surprisingly contentious among film-buffs — and 1989's Uncle Buck is at the center of many of these arguments.
When choosing a movie that might earn the label, Uncle Buck is among the list of controversial Christmas movies. While some might argue the label belongs to any movie that happens to take place on Christmas, most feel the genre has other requirements. Nonetheless, the now-iconic '80s John Hughes movie has become traditional Christmas fare for many, and even has a history of...

When 9-1-1 decides to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks, you get an hour like 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 8.
That's not to say it was a slog because the hour actually moves pretty quickly with so many moving parts. But with an overabundance of stories comes limited time to flesh everything out in a cohesive manner.
So while the hour is palatable enough, it could have been something else if the stories had a little more room to breathe.
May's decision to go off to college and give up her dispatch job was one that she agonized over, and while we haven't gotten a chance to really check in with her and explore her college life, when she shows up here, you can tell that she's in good spirits and doing well.
She's hanging out with Darius, a blast from the past we haven't seen in quite some time.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Let the Games Begin,” the “9-1-1” Season 6 premiere.
“9-1-1” returned in all its zany glory Monday on Fox with the premiere of its sixth season. During the episode, Oliver Stark’s Evan “Buck” Buckley tackled a blimp emergency with his team at the 118 — and yet that somehow wasn’t the biggest hurdle he had to overcome in the Season 6 premiere.
Here, Variety breaks down the episode, titled “Let the Games Begin,” with Stark and how it lays the groundwork for Buck’s journey throughout the rest of “9-1-1” Season 6.
What are you thoughts on Buck’s feelings about being passed over for replacement captain while Bobby is away? What does he need to do to become ready to take on that role some day?
I think being a firefighter is such a huge part of Buck’s identity.

Who’s in the mood for some giant panckes? 1989’s Uncle Buck is arguably John Candy’s second-best movie ever. John Hughes’ Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is probably the film he’s most remembered for, and the director/star combo worked so well they re-teamed for Uncle Buck two years later. This family comedy was the biggest hit of Candy’s career. Notably, it introduced the world to Macaulay Culkin, whose precocious performance led to Home Alone a year later. Looking back at the movie now, it’s a too-often ignored classic, with a Candy performance that mixes humor, pathos, and even a touch of menace in a way only the late, great actor could.
This month’s John Hughes Revisited is written, edited, and narrated by Matthew Hacienda.
Do you agree that Uncle Buck is Candy’s second-best movie? Let us know in the comments!
