Born in Lucerne, Villi Hermann now lives in Lugano, Switzerland.
He studied at the London Film School (LSFT) and worked for Swiss television. He started with documentary films. He often uses documentary and fiction elements in his films. His film San Gottardo won the Silver Leopard at the 1977 Locarno Film Festival. Matlosa (1981) is his first fiction film, for which he directs and produces. In 1981 he founds his own production company: Imagofilm Lugano.
He is a member of the Association of Swiss Film Makers (ARF/FDS), the Association of Swiss Film Producers GARP and the Association Film and Audiovisuals Ticino AFAT. Member of the European Film Academy.
