Rounding Review: Small‑Town Horror Meets Medical Drama
Image
As a longtime admirer of films that rearrange form—whether it’s Godard’s sudden jump cuts or the raw immediacy of modern indie dramas—I approached Alex Thompson’s Rounding with eager anticipation. This 91‑minute psychological horror/medical drama unfolds in a snowbound rural hospital in the fictional town of Greenville, where every sterile corridor feels both routine and ominous.

We meet Dr. James Hayman, a medical resident haunted by a breakdown after an assisted suicide incident, who arrives here hoping for a clean slate. His fixation on Helen Adso, a teenager with inexplicable asthma crises, propels the story into darker territory.

Thompson’s direction marries the measured pace of ward “rounds” with fleeting, unsettling imagery that lingers at the edge of perception. Nate Hurtsellers’s cinematography bathes scenes in icy blues and stark shadows, while Quinn Tsan and Macie Stewart’s score weaves a subtle, pulsing undercurrent—think...

‘Rounding’ Review: Modest Thriller Conjures Atmospheric but Convoluted Suspense in a Rural Hospital
Image
Once considered the most disreputable of screen genres, horror has become so pervasive and popular that it’s not unusual now to see a movie presenting itself as such simply for the sake of commercial insurance. That seems the case with “Rounding,” a well-acted and atmospheric psychological thriller with Namir Smallwood as a medical resident who unravels in his new hospital placement. It’s got enough going on that the shoehorning of horror elements — including an eventual monster — feels gratuitous within a tricky narrative already over-compressed into an hour and a half.

Alex Thompson’s sophomore feature was actually made before last year’s acclaimed “Ghostlight,” though it’s only getting released well after a 2022 Tribeca Festival premiere. Doppelganger is distributing to U.S. theaters and on-demand platforms as of Feb. 14.

Working here sans his usual directing and writing partner Kelly O’Sullivan (though she plays a supporting role), Thompson establishes...

The Biggest Twists in House MD, Ranked
Image
House MD continues to be one of the most memorable and groundbreaking medical dramas, even over a decade after the show's finale. House introduced the Sherlock Holmes-inspired Doctor Gregory House and his unique view of the world and relationships, as well as his struggles with addiction. And from then on, House earned a loyal following that enjoyed the medical puzzles, dramatic moments, and shocking twists.

Some of the most shocking twists in House are still talked about today. From unexpected deaths or reveals that challenged what audiences believed to be true to surprising turns and revelations about the patients themselves, House MD always knew how to keep audiences guessing. The best and most unexpected twists dealt both with the main characters, such as House, Cuddy, Wilson, or House's team, as well as the patients and medical mysteries. And the biggest twists in House MD stand out for being shocking...

Image
Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson’s deeply moving drama Ghostlight made a splash last year following its Sundance Film Festival premiere and subsequent summer release. Led by Namir Smallwood, Michael Potts, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always star Sidney Flanigan, the new trailer has now arrived ahead of a February 14 theatrical and digital release.

Here’s the synopsis: “After a traumatic incident during his residency, young medical student James Hayman (Namir Smallwood) transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. ‘Rounding’ Trailer: Sidney Flanigan Might Be Possessed in Alex Thompson’s Psychological Thriller
Image
“Ghostlight” and “Saint Frances” writer/director Alex Thompson is back onscreen with another festival hit: “Rounding.”

Thompson’s latest psychological thriller stars “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” breakout Sidney Flanigan as an asthma patient who starts to experience mysterious symptoms. Her stay at the hospital intersects with the arrival of young medical student James Hayman (Namir Smallwood), who previously endured a traumatic incident during his residency before transferring to a rural hospital for a fresh start.

Per the official synopsis, “the demons of James’ past begin to catch up with him when he becomes consumed by the case, and his grip on reality starts to slip as his disturbing nightmares, anxiety-fueled speculations, and physical injuries collide with the harsh realities of the world of medicine.”

Michael Potts and Rebecca Spence also star.

“Rounding” premiered at Tribeca 2022, and went on to screen at Rooftop and the Chicago International Film Festival. The film...

Film Review: Tokyo Pop (1988) by Fran Rubel Kuzui

Why ABC Canceled Ugly Betty After 4 Seasons
Image
This article contains discussions of suicide.

Based on the Colombian telenovela "Yo soy Betty, la fea," the ABC sitcom "Ugly Betty" ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2010 and helped make lead actress America Ferrera into a major star. So why did it get canceled so quickly? Will there ever be a reunion? Oh, and also — what was "Ugly Betty" about, besides a girl named Betty who isn't as "pretty" as other women?

The show stars America Ferrera as the titular Betty Suarez, who, despite her braces and admittedly strange fashion sense, lands a job at Mode Magazine in Manhattan as an assistant to notorious womanizer Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius). Along the way, Betty ends up making some unlikely friends and allies, including Daniel himself — the two have a genuinely wholesome friendship, actually — but also has to face off against the imperious creative director of Mode, Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), as...

‘Rounding’ Tribeca Film Review: Solid Scares & Great Lead Performance Anchor This Medical Horror
Image
The new psychological horror film Rounding, which recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, provides an intimate character study of medical resident James Hayman while at the same time serving up some excellent horror imagery and tense moments where the audience really doesn’t know whose perspective to believe. Rounding occasionally buckles under its own weight […]

Exclusive Poster for Alex Thompson’s Tribeca Premiere Rounding Lights a Flame
Image
Following his SXSW winner and Indie Spirit nominee Saint Frances, writer-director Alex Thompson turns to the psychological drama for his next feature Rounding. Starring newcomer Namir Smallwood and Never Rarely Sometimes Always star Sidney Flanigan, the film––set to premiere tonight at Tribeca––was written by Thompson and his brother Christopher, a medical resident himself, and was inspired by his father’s stories of patients at work as a pulmonologist. Ahead of the premiere, we’re delighted to debut an evocative first poster.

Rounding follows driven medical resident James Hayman (Smallwood) who transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. There, the demons of his past start to catch up to him when he becomes consumed by the case of young asthma patient Helen Adso (Flanigan). As James’ claims grow increasingly alarming, Helen’s mother is determined to keep the case out of his hands and the hospital administration...

“My Handiest Trick is to Watch as Many Previous Episodes as You Can — With the Sound Off”: Mary Lou Belli on Directing NCIS: New Orleans
I’ve written elsewhere about my admiration for the filmmaking on NCIS: New Orleans, a procedural that channels the spirit of Rio Bravo-era Howard Hawks to combine laid-back charm and camaraderie with kinetic, expertly choreographed action sequences. Under the guidance of producing director James Hayman, whose “Aftershocks” episode from season three is a clinic in Hitchcockian suspense, NCIS: New Orleans has assembled one of the best rotating companies of directors in episodic television: James Whitmore, Jr., Stacey K. Black, Rob Greenlea, and Bethany Rooney are just some of the superb helmers who have done fine work on the series over the […]...

Fields sitting pretty with 'Ugly Betty'
Writer-producer Joel Fields has joined ABC's Ugly Betty as an executive producer.

He is expected to serve as a partner of creator/executive producer Silvio Horta on the writing side on the sophomore series.

The hiring of Fields fills a void left by the recent departure of executive producer Marco Pennette, who was let go last month, along with executive producer-director James Hayman.

Fields will start immediately on Betty. The ABC Studios-produced series begins production on its five-episode post-strike order next week.

Fields will serve as an executive producer alongside Horta, Salma Hayek and Jose Tamez, on the show, which has been renewed for next season.

Fields most recently was an executive producer/writing showrunner on FX's drama Dirt, which also is produced by ABC Studios.

The future of Dirt is in doubt after its abbreviated second season recently launched to lackluster ratings.

Fields is repped by CAA and attorney Tom Hoberman.
