The 15 Best Monster Movies Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Ever since we first learn about dinosaurs as kids, the idea of monsters is fascinating. More powerful and fantastical than regular animals, they inhabit the closet space of our minds and dark corners of imagination. It's a bummer to grow up and realize that creatures like Bigfoot and Nessie probably don't exist, but it's a blast to see movies in which the only limits to the large, dangerous things we can see are the filmmakers' creativity.

"Monster" has many definitions, but for the purposes of this list, they are creatures that do not and have not existed in real life (so far as we know), with a feral or savage side. Horror villains that are basically intelligent, leveled-up humans don't count, but devolved humans like werewolves are fair game. Normal human beings who simply look or act frightening belong on a list of villains instead. Ironically, this rules out most of the Universal "monsters,...

Newly scanned in 4K, Roger Corman’s “Monster From The Ocean Floor” arriving on Blu-ray & DVD
Image
Scanned in 4k from an original 35mm camera negative, Film Masters announces its first special edition of 2025, the cult classic, Monster From The Ocean Floor (1954), available 4th February 2025 on Blu-ray and DVD.

The first feature-length film produced by the iconic king of pop cinema, Roger Corman, Monster From The Ocean Floor was inspired by a Los Angeles Times story Corman read about a one-man submarine manufactured by Aerojet General. He couldn’t pay for utilizing the sub in his move, but he promised plenty of publicity … and a deal was struck.

For his inaugural endeavor, Corman recruited first-timers William Danch (Shazam!, The Jim Backus Show, Mickey) to write the screenplay and director Wyott Ordung (A Whale of a Tale, The Mummy and the Curse of the Jackals, The Navy vs. the Night Monsters). Other first-timers included actor Stuart Wade (Teenage Monster) and, soon to be a regular Corman player, Jonathan Haze...

The Little Shop of Horrors star Jonathan Haze has passed away at 95
Image
Jonathan Haze had over 40 screen acting credits to his name, with many of those credits being earned on Roger Corman productions – and the one credit that stands out among all others came when Haze took on the role of Seymour Krelborn in Corman’s 1960 man-eating plant classic The Little Shop of Horrors. We lost Corman earlier this year, when he passed away at the age of 98. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that we’ve lost Haze as well. His daughter Rebecca informed them that Haze passed away at his home in Los Angeles this past Saturday at the age of 95.

A cousin of drummer Buddy Rich, Haze was born with the name Jack Aaron Schachter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 1, 1929. He worked the stage for Rich and was Josephine Baker’s stage manager for two years before he got into acting. He hitchhiked to L.A. and got a...

Jonathan Haze, Star of the Original ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ Dies at 95
Image
Jonathan Haze, who starred for Roger Corman as the flower shop assistant Seymour Krelborn in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, just one of two dozen films he made with the B-movie legend, has died. He was 95.

Haze died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Rebecca Haze, told The Hollywood Reporter.

A cousin of drummer Buddy Rich, Haze was a valuable and versatile member of Corman’s repertory company from 1954 — when he acted in The Fast and the Furious and Monster From the Ocean Floor — until 1967, when he appeared in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and served as an assistant director on The Born Losers.

In one of his more noteworthy turns, Haze portrayed one of the three teenagers who stumble upon $250,000 worth of heroin and become dealers in Warner Bros. drama Stakeout on Dope Street (1958), the first feature directed by Irvin Kershner.

His daughter, Rebecca Haze, told Deadline that he died peacefully of natural causes on November 2 at his home in Los Angeles but did not provide a cause.

Jonathan Haze and Dorothy Malone in ‘Five Guns West,’ 1955

Born in Pittsburgh on April 1, 1929, Haze was discovered working in a gas station by Wyott Ordung, who gave him a role in Monster from the Ocean Floor, which Corman produced. Two-Disc Collection Packed With Special Features, Including Bonus Film The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) and Film Commentary by Star Jonathan Haze

The duality of Roger Corman is on display, showcasing his spooky gothic side with The Terror (1963) — marking the 60th anniversary of its release this year — and his more whimsical side with The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) in this double-feature, special-edition, two-disc, collector’s set, on Blu-ray and DVD 12th December 2023 from Film Masters.

In The Terror—with an all-new HD restoration from 35mm archival elements — an 18th century French Lieutenant in Napoleon’s army encounters the ghostly apparition of a young woman (Sandra Knight). 10 Great Movies With Budgets Under $500k
Image
Low-budget films can achieve cinematic greatness and have a lasting impact, as demonstrated by cult classics like Little Shop of Horrors and The Blair Witch Project. Independent filmmakers can create successful films without exorbitant budgets, as seen with El Mariachi and She's Gotta Have It. Low-budget movies promote artistic innovation and creative storytelling, challenging filmmakers to think outside the box and deliver compelling narratives on limited resources.

While budgets have notably skyrocketed in recent years for many major franchise films, comedies, and dramas alike, some of the most iconic and beloved movies of the past several decades cost less than $500,000 to make. In the age of multi-million-dollar blockbusters, it can be easy to overlook the creative gems that emerge from low-budget, independent filmmaking. Often driven by ingenuity and resourcefulness, low-budget films can still captivate audiences with unique storytelling and innovative approaches. Films with a limited budget can fuel artistic innovation,...

‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ (1960) – The Original
Image
The Little Shop of Horrors is a 1960 comedy horror movie directed by Roger Corman, starring Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles, and Dick Miller. It was in this movie that Jack Nicholson made one of his earliest appearances on film. He was years later quoted in Corman’s 1998 book recounting how he experienced the reception of the movie saying that the audience

“laughed so hard I could barely hear the dialogue. I didn’t quite register it right. It was as if I had forgotten it was a comedy since the shoot. I got all embarrassed because I’d never really had such a positive response before.”.

The Budget For Little Shop Of Horrors Sparked A Battle With Warner Bros.
Image
The 1986 musical "Little Shop of Horrors" started its life as a zero-budget monster comedy that Roger Corman legendarily shot over the course of two days and a single night. Rehearsals were only held for the three days prior, and it was filmed on sets that had been left standing for the production of "A Bucket of Blood," which had just wrapped filming. A young Jack Nicholson appears in the film as a masochistic dental patient. The 1960 film is a prime example of low-budget tenacity at work — all one needs is gumption, a portion of an idea, and a few actors willing to read lines.

The film is about a nebbish named Seymour (Jonathan Haze) who discovers a talking alien plant (Charles B. Griffith) that thirsts for human flesh. In order to appease his boss and impress his would-be girlfriend Audrey (Jackie Joseph), he feeds the plant his own blood and,...

Day the World Ended
Image
Another key ’50s sci-fi makes it to Blu-ray in an admirable encoding. Roger Corman’s end-of-the-world survivalist struggle against radioactive mist and three-eyed mutants shines in the glory of Superscope: Richard Denning and cute Lori Nelson must contend with a human monster in Touch Connors’ gangster. Adele Jergens spices things up, while Paul Birch delivers downer sermons about doomsday. It’s a truly marvelous atom fable, full of fanciful silly-science that makes for good storytelling. With a commentary by Tom Weaver. And don’t forget to click the ‘Rhododendron’ link.

Another Nice Mess
Bob Einstein’s political satire brings together several unlikely duos, Laurel and Hardy, Nixon and Agnew, and Tom Smothers and Jonathan Haze. Smothers and Haze (star of The Little Shop of Horrors) produced this obscure film in 1972—obscure because an unhappy Smothers promptly buried it. Nixon and Agnew are portrayed as hapless clowns in the style of Laurel and Hardy with Rich Little playing Nixon and Herb Voland (Airplane!) as Agnew. Notable for the first, albeit brief, film appearance by Steve Martin. For better or worse, the complete movie can be seen here.

The Beast with a Million Eyes
Once again CineSavant becomes intrigued by a minor genre opus normally dismissed in a sentence or two; this Roger Corman production may fall short of his other early efforts because it tried to be too cerebral and then ran afoul of the Hollywood Guilds. David Kramarsky is listed as director but it’s hard to know how many of the credits are accurate — or simply bogus. Monstermaker extraordinaire Paul Blaisdell apparently came to the rescue with 11th-hour special effects to give the ambiguous, invisible alien menace more substance. Scorpion’s release has a new transfer and a commentary by Tim Lucas.

The Little Shop Of Horrors (1960) Screening at Urban Chestnut July 11th
“Now, no novocaine. It dulls the senses.”

Webster University’s Award-Winning Strange Brew Film Series has moved! The new location is Urban Chestnut in the Grove. This month’s film is the 1960 version of The Little Shop Of Horrors . It’s this Wednesday, July 11th. The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5.

Roger Corman, who allegedly could negotiate the production of a film on a pay phone, shoot the film in the booth, and finance it with the money in the change slot, shot The Little Shop Of Horrors (1960) in two days and one night on a set that was left over from someone else’s production.

It is a classic featuring a very young Jack Nicholson as an undertaker who loved pain in his third film. The face that was to later become famous in The Shining was quite evident. Jonathan Haze played the lead as the clumsy...

Roger Corman’s ferocious gangster epic (more squibs!) bounces back in a UK Region B edition, noisier and bloodier than ever. Jason Robards, George Segal, Ralph Meeker and a couple of dozen top-notch hoods replay the ugly events that led up to the notorious 1929 gangland slaying — which now almost seems tame — where gun massacres are concerned, today ‘Every Day Is a Holiday.’

‘Blood Bath’ Blu-ray Review
Arrow Video’s latest release, Blood Bath, has a storied history. You may be surprised to discover how the footage filmed for it was stretched over four different films. Thankfully Arrow have not only included these four films, but taken a look into a very interesting production…

Blood Bath in its final form is the story of Antonio Sordi (William Campbell) who believed himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire. Killing young women, he then boils them in a vat of wax, using their beauty to create his latest masterpieces which he then sells.

In Blood Bath you can see all the trademarks of a Corman horror film, but this is down to the work of Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman who worked on rewrites and re-shoots for many of the footage that had been recorded. The film in its original form was actually known as Operation Titian...

This four-feature set is the weirdest cinematic treasure box of the year, a sort of anti-matter film school. Three of the films are derived from a single Yugoslavian picture rejected by Roger Corman. Watch: Jack Nicholson and Bill Murray Play the Same Sadistic Dental Patient in 'Little Shop of Horrors'
Yesterday it was announced that a new version of Little Shop of Horrors was being prepped for the big screen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt producing and perhaps starring in the role of Seymour, once portrayed by Rick Moranis in the more memorable 1986 movie (Jonathan Haze played the character in Roger Corman's 1960 version). Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) will write the script, which we're sure will include some fun (updated) musical numbers. I'm a huge fan of this property, having seen the original off-Broadway play when I was a little kid, as well as both film versions, and so naturally news of its return has pushed me over to YouTube to dig up some of my favorite clips. One little factoid that some folks know and some don't is that...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Buying Into 'Little Shop of Horrors' Remake
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is nowhere near done with his intense child star-turned-Tinseltown-guru transformation. This time, he's taking the driver's seat of a remake vehicle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levitt is teaming up with some successful Broadway showrunners to develop a reboot of the 1960 cult classic film "The Little Shop of Horrors" (which later became an off-Broadway production and then a 1986 Frank Oz movie) with the intention of starring in it.

Marc Platt ("Wanted," "Legally Blonde") will produce, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (playwright on Broadway's current "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark") is writing the script.

Levitt, meanwhile, aims to star as Seymour Krelboyne, the central nerdy character who must kill people in order to feed a bloodthirsty man-eating plant and maintain his floral shop's fortune and fame. The same role was previously portrayed by Jonathan Haze and Rick Moranis in the 1960 and 1986 films, respectively.

Levitt is also currently developing his own as-yet-untitled romantic comedy script,...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Circles Little Shop of Horrors Remake
Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Tichina Arnold, Tisha Campbell, Vincent Gardenia, Ellen Greene, Levi Stubbs, and Michelle Weeks in La Petite Boutique des horreurs (1986)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is eyeing the Warner Bros. remake Little Shop of Horrors. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is drafting the new Carrie remake for MGM, is in negotiations to write the screenplay.

If he officially signs on, the actor will play Seymour Kilborn, a meek florist who must continue to feed his gigantic plant, which feasts on humans, to secure his newfound fame and fortune. The role was previously played by Jonathan Haze in the 1960 version of The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman, and by Rick Moranis in Frank Oz's 1987 rendition, Little Shop of Horrors.

Marc Platt (Drive) is producing for the studio, although no director has been attached yet.

Little Shop of Horrors was released December 19th, 1986 and stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Levi Stubbs. The film is directed by Frank Oz.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Developing Little Shop of Horrors Remake
Heat Vision reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is developing a Little Shop of Horrors remake at Warner Bros. Pictures as a vehicle for him to star in. Marc Platt (Broadway's "Wicked," Wanted ) is producing the new version, which will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Broadway's "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark"). A director has not yet been set. Roger Corman's original 1960 version starred Jonathan Haze and also featured Jack Nicholson in one of his first film appearances. Top Ten Tuesday: The Best of Roger Corman
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman

Celebrated producer and director Roger Corman will be in St. Louis this weekend to help kick off the Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival. We Are Movie Geeks has decided to take a look at the directing career of the man known as .King of the B.s’, a Hollywood legend who.s discovered so much talent and gave so many future directors and actors their starts, that he has to be considered a one-man movie industry. Since we just posted the Top Ten Best of Vincent Price last week and included three of the eight Corman/Price collaborations in that list, we decided to leave off the films he made with Price this week and focus on other films that he directed. Roger Corman will be at the Hi-Pointe Theater at 1005 McCausland Ave. in St. Louis on Saturday May 21 to speak...

The Terror (1963)
Directed By: Roger Corman, Francis Ford Coppola, Monte Hellman, Jack Hill, Jack Nicholson.

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, Sandra Knight, Dick Miller, Jonathan Haze

It’s rare when the story behind the film is more famous and interesting than the actual film, but Roger Corman’s The Terror is one of those films. Famous for being shot on leftover film sets from other American International Pictures film sets and for having at least 5 different directors throughout shooting, The Terror has also had the pleasure of being released with several different titles (Lady of the Shadows, The Castle of Terror and The Haunting). It’s no wonder then, when one thinks about The Terror, the first thing that comes to mind is confusion.

In 18th Century France, Lt. Andre Duvalier (Jack Nicholson), an officer in Napoleon’s army, has been separated from his regiment. Wandering near the coast, he spies a...

Roger Corman's Cult Classics Triple Feature (Attack of the Crab Monsters / War of the Satellites / Not of This Earth)
While other releases in the Shout! Factory’s Roger Corman’s Cult Classics focus on his producing credits, the recent Sci-Fi Classics showcases three of his early directorial works. Oh, he also produced all three, worked with the writers on the scripts and even pitched the projects to investors. Like many directors today, when you call something a "Corman film", it’s because he’s influenced the project from the start.

First up is Attack of the Crab Monsters, which manages to be quite effective despite its ludicrous premise. A group of scientists arrive on a remote Pacific island to study the effects of fallout from recent nuclear testing in the Pacific. They also want to discover what happened to the first team, which disappeared without a trace.

It’s not long before mysterious things start to happen. A sailor is pulled out of the water without his head, the...

Party Favors: Ascots For All
Encino, CA - While Charles Nelson Reilly is beloved for his time on Match Game, there’s more to this actor than Dumb Dora answers. He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.

After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

Or maybe you'd just like to find comfort in another Roger Corman fest from a kinder, gentler era - a triple treat that has nothing to do with coffins. Yay!

Roger Corman on "Naked Paradise"
Roger's 1956 trip to Hawaii resulted in two movies (naturally) and this one was so well plotted by Chuck Griffith and Mark Hanna that he remade it several times under different titles and in different locations. Look for later leads Dick Miller and Jonathan Haze in supporting henchmen roles. Then- girlfriend Beverly Garland stars in the fourth of five pictures for Roger.

Little Shop Of Horrors remake finds a director
The first question that springs to mind is, 'when did they green light a "Little Shop of Horrors" remake?' If anyone out there knows please tell me, because this is the first I've heard of it.

The original 1960 film (not the later musical) has become something of a cult classic due to word of mouth, and a small part played by a young Jack Nicholson - an appearance that is now almost misleadingly marketed on current releases of the film.

The actual stars were Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles and Dick Miller all of whom had worked for director Roger Corman previously, and the film is described on IMDb as:

"A classic black comedy about young schnook who develops a bloodthirsty plant and is forced to kill in order to feed it. The basis for the later hit stage musical."The young director who has optioned the rights...
