Ever since we first learn about dinosaurs as kids, the idea of monsters is fascinating. More powerful and fantastical than regular animals, they inhabit the closet space of our minds and dark corners of imagination. It's a bummer to grow up and realize that creatures like Bigfoot and Nessie probably don't exist, but it's a blast to see movies in which the only limits to the large, dangerous things we can see are the filmmakers' creativity.

"Monster" has many definitions, but for the purposes of this list, they are creatures that do not and have not existed in real life (so far as we know), with a feral or savage side. Horror villains that are basically intelligent, leveled-up humans don't count, but devolved humans like werewolves are fair game. Scanned in 4k from an original 35mm camera negative, Film Masters announces its first special edition of 2025, the cult classic, Monster From The Ocean Floor (1954), available 4th February 2025 on Blu-ray and DVD.

The first feature-length film produced by the iconic king of pop cinema, Roger Corman, Monster From The Ocean Floor was inspired by a Los Angeles Times story Corman read about a one-man submarine manufactured by Aerojet General. He couldn’t pay for utilizing the sub in his move, but he promised plenty of publicity … and a deal was struck.

For his inaugural endeavor, Corman recruited first-timers William Danch (Shazam!, The Jim Backus Show, Mickey) to write the screenplay and director Wyott Ordung (A Whale of a Tale, The Mummy and the Curse of the Jackals, The Navy vs. the Night Monsters). Jonathan Haze had over 40 screen acting credits to his name, with many of those credits being earned on Roger Corman productions – and the one credit that stands out among all others came when Haze took on the role of Seymour Krelborn in Corman’s 1960 man-eating plant classic The Little Shop of Horrors. We lost Corman earlier this year, when he passed away at the age of 98. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that we’ve lost Haze as well. His daughter Rebecca informed them that Haze passed away at his home in Los Angeles this past Saturday at the age of 95.

Jonathan Haze, who starred for Roger Corman as the flower shop assistant Seymour Krelborn in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, just one of two dozen films he made with the B-movie legend, has died. He was 95.

Haze died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Rebecca Haze, told The Hollywood Reporter.

A cousin of drummer Buddy Rich, Haze was a valuable and versatile member of Corman’s repertory company from 1954 — when he acted in The Fast and the Furious and Monster From the Ocean Floor — until 1967, when he appeared in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and served as an assistant director on The Born Losers.

In one of his more noteworthy turns, Haze portrayed one of the three teenagers who stumble upon $250,000 worth of heroin and become dealers in Warner Bros. drama Stakeout on Dope Street (1958), the first feature directed by Irvin Kershner.

His daughter, Rebecca Haze, shared the news with Deadline on Monday, November 4. According to that release, he “died peacefully” on Saturday (November 2) at his home in Los Angeles, California. She did not provide a cause of death. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1929, Haze was working in a gas station when he caught the attention of director and horror legend Roger Corman. Joe Dante and Roger Corman are teaming up with Brad Krevoy for another shot at Little Shop of Horrors.

Per Deadline, Joe Dante and Roger Corman have joined producer and Mpca CEO Brad Krevoy for a reboot of Corman's 1960 horror-comedy hit, Little Shop of Horrors. Corman will co-produce alongside Krevoy, while Dante is slated to direct the film from a script by Charles S. Haas. Dante previously directed Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which was also written by Haas.

Rehearsals were only held for the three days prior, and it was filmed on sets that had been left standing for the production of "A Bucket of Blood," which had just wrapped filming. Bob Einstein’s political satire brings together several unlikely duos, Laurel and Hardy, Nixon and Agnew, and Tom Smothers and Jonathan Haze. Smothers and Haze (star of The Little Shop of Horrors) produced this obscure film in 1972—obscure because an unhappy Smothers promptly buried it. Nixon and Agnew are portrayed as hapless clowns in the style of Laurel and Hardy with Rich Little playing Nixon and Herb Voland (Airplane!) as Agnew. Once again CineSavant becomes intrigued by a minor genre opus normally dismissed in a sentence or two; this Roger Corman production may fall short of his other early efforts because it tried to be too cerebral and then ran afoul of the Hollywood Guilds. David Kramarsky is listed as director but it’s hard to know how many of the credits are accurate — or simply bogus. Monstermaker extraordinaire Paul Blaisdell apparently came to the rescue with 11th-hour special effects to give the ambiguous, invisible alien menace more substance. Scorpion’s release has a new transfer and a commentary by Tim Lucas.

Blood Bath in its final form is the story of Antonio Sordi (William Campbell) who believed himself to be the reincarnation of a murderous vampire. Killing young women, he then boils them in a vat of wax, using their beauty to create his latest masterpieces which he then sells.

Yesterday it was announced that a new version of Little Shop of Horrors was being prepped for the big screen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt producing and perhaps starring in the role of Seymour, once portrayed by Rick Moranis in the more memorable 1986 movie (Jonathan Haze played the character in Roger Corman's 1960 version). Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) will write the script, which we're sure will include some fun (updated) musical numbers. I'm a huge fan of this property, having seen the original off-Broadway play when I was a little kid, as well as both film versions, and so naturally news of its return has pushed me over to YouTube to dig up some of my favorite clips. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is nowhere near done with his intense child star-turned-Tinseltown-guru transformation. This time, he's taking the driver's seat of a remake vehicle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levitt is teaming up with some successful Broadway showrunners to develop a reboot of the 1960 cult classic film "The Little Shop of Horrors" (which later became an off-Broadway production and then a 1986 Frank Oz movie) with the intention of starring in it.

Marc Platt ("Wanted," "Legally Blonde") will produce, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (playwright on Broadway's current "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark") is writing the script.

Levitt, meanwhile, aims to star as Seymour Krelboyne, the central nerdy character who must kill people in order to feed a bloodthirsty man-eating plant and maintain his floral shop's fortune and fame. The same role was previously portrayed by Jonathan Haze and Rick Moranis in the 1960 and 1986 films, respectively.

Levitt is also currently developing his own as-yet-untitled romantic comedy script,...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is eyeing the Warner Bros. remake Little Shop of Horrors. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is drafting the new Carrie remake for MGM, is in negotiations to write the screenplay.

If he officially signs on, the actor will play Seymour Kilborn, a meek florist who must continue to feed his gigantic plant, which feasts on humans, to secure his newfound fame and fortune. The role was previously played by Jonathan Haze in the 1960 version of The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman, and by Rick Moranis in Frank Oz's 1987 rendition, Little Shop of Horrors.

Marc Platt (Drive) is producing for the studio, although no director has been attached yet.

Little Shop of Horrors was released December 19th, 1986 and stars Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Vincent Gardenia, Steve Martin, Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Levi Stubbs. The film is directed by Frank Oz.

Marc Platt (Broadway's "Wicked," Wanted ) is producing the new version, which will be written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Broadway's "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark"). A director has not yet been set. Roger Corman's original 1960 version starred Jonathan Haze and also featured Jack Nicholson in one of his first film appearances. The tale of a mild-mannered young man who discovers a carnivorous plant was remade in '86 with Frank Oz in the director's chair. That film starred Rick Moranis and Steve Martin. Gordon-Levitt's upcoming credits include The Dark Knight Rises , Premium Rush , Looper and Lincoln .

You may or may not have heard that we have a brand new DVD coming out on July 5th, featuring 20 all-new, exclusive trailer commentaries and a brand new anamorphic transfer of Roger Corman’s cult classic The Little Shop Of Horrors.

And we’re celebrating this monumental occasion with a couple signings in the Los Angeles area.

He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. They quickly fall prey to giant, mutant crustaceans that have the ability to absorb the minds of their prey. Starring Russell Johnson (Gilligan’s Island), Richard Garland and Mel Welles (Little Shop Of Horrors). Attack Of The Crab Monsters is a Roger Corman Production. Produced and directed by Roger Corman; screenplay by Charles B. Griffith.

Roger's 1956 trip to Hawaii resulted in two movies (naturally) and this one was so well plotted by Chuck Griffith and Mark Hanna that he remade it several times under different titles and in different locations. Look for later leads Dick Miller and Jonathan Haze in supporting henchmen roles. Then- girlfriend Beverly Garland stars in the fourth of five pictures for Roger.

The seed for another remake has been planted. Roger Corman's "The Little Shop Of Horrors" is going to be updated under the direction of Corman vet and "Wrong Turn 3" helmer Declan O'Brien. The first question that springs to mind is, 'when did they green light a "Little Shop of Horrors" remake?' If anyone out there knows please tell me, because this is the first I've heard of it.

The original 1960 film (not the later musical) has become something of a cult classic due to word of mouth, and a small part played by a young Jack Nicholson - an appearance that is now almost misleadingly marketed on current releases of the film.

The actual stars were Jonathan Haze, Jackie Joseph, Mel Welles and Dick Miller all of whom had worked for director Roger Corman previously, and the film is described on IMDb as:
