A former musician, Hayward entered the film industry in 1919 as a script editor. She later worked her way up to screenwriter and spent a number of years under contract to Warner Bros., where she specialized in action films. Hayward also wrote a number of "B" movies for Paramount and RKO studios. Toward the end of her career, she wrote family films for Disney.
