- Knut Haugland was born on September 23, 1917 in Rjukan, Telemark, Norway. He was a cinematographer, known for L'expédition du Kon-Tiki (1950), Rapport fra Nr. 24 (1994) and Kon-Tiki: Over tidens hav (1997). He was married to Ingebjørg Prestholdt. He died on December 25, 2009 in Oslo, Norway.

- As a Norwegian resistance fighter in WWII, he was decorated by the British for helping to prevent the Germans from acquiring heavy water to make nuclear weapons.
- Was the last surviving crew member who crossed the Pacific Ocean aboard the wood raft Kon-Tiki at the time of his death. Twice awarded Norway's highest decoration, the War Cross with Sword.
