How Spike Jonze’s ‘Her’ and Sofia Coppola’s ‘Lost in Translation’ Turned Loneliness Into Cinema
Image
Cinema has always been in love with romance and has a way of turning private wounds into public rancor. But what about the ache that lingers when love fails, fades, or simply never arrives? Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation” (2003) and Spike Jonze’s “Her” (2013) capture that ache not as background noise but as the very subject of cinema. Their irony is almost literary. What began as a marriage ended in the creation of two phenomenal artworks which was way ahead of their time. It truly seemed as if Coppola and Jonze were sending each other films instead of farewells.

Neither director of these films has explicitly acknowledged their films as responses to one another.

‘Hit Man (1972)’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Bernie Casey, Pam Grier, Lisa Moore, Bhetty Waldron, Sam Laws, Candy All, Don Diamond, Edmund Cambridge, Bob Harris, Rudy Challenger, Tracy Ann-King, Christopher Joy, Roger E. Mosley, John Lupton | Written and Directed by George Armitage

In the early 1970s, American filmmakers started a new genre of film in ‘Blaxploitation’. These films were mostly black casts and made for black audiences. Most of these films were known for their violence and sexual content. The term ‘blaxploitation’ was coined by the president of the Beverly Hills–Hollywood branch of the NAACP, Junius Griffin, in 1972. The same year Hit Man was released. This year sees the film celebrate its 53rd anniversary. Now, for this anniversary, Warner Archive Collection have restored this film and released it on Blu-ray for the first time!

Bill Murray ‘Was in a Hard Place’ During ‘Lost in Translation,’ Says Scarlett Johansson
Image
Bob Harris, the morose movie star played by Bill Murray in Sofia Coppola’s Lost In Translation, is all kinds of messy. He’s neck-deep in a mid-life crisis, thanks to a crumbling marriage, a fading career and severe Japanese jet lag. His only solace? A platonic friendship with a recent Yale philosophy grad (Scarlett Johansson) who’s abandoned in Tokyo and just as lonesome as he is.

When Johansson — only 17! — made Lost in Translation, she found herself just as isolated and desolate as her character, Charlotte. Unlike Charlotte, however, she didn’t fall into a meaningful friendship with her older male counterpart, despite being a fan of Murray films like What About Bob? and Groundhog Day. “Bill was in a hard place,” she told Vanity Fair. “Everybody was on tenterhooks around him, including our director and the full crew, because he was dealing with his… stuff.”

It was the...

Borrowed Time: Lennon’s Last Decade review – reverential reminiscence takes its time
Lennon
There’s potentially too many run-of-the-mill I-met-Lennon anecdotes from talking heads and fans, but enough wheat among the chaff to keep things interesting

We have recently seen a slew of intriguing movies about John Lennon’s post-Beatles existence: The Lost Weekend: A Love Story, about Lennon’s brief relationship with his assistant May Pang, and Kevin Macdonald’s excellent archive-clip-collage study One to One: John & Yoko. Now here is a lengthy and self-consciously reverential film, which is sadly the weakest of the group. It doesn’t quite get to grips with the implications of its own title and there’s an awful lot of hot air from an awful lot of talking heads in its lengthy running time, some of whom are regaling us with less-than-premium-quality anecdotes – often just beamingly recalling the pinch-me moment they actually met John Lennon and, wow, he said hi and they couldn’t believe it.

When Scarlett Johansson Almost Refused To Wear That Iconic Underwear In Lost In Translation: Sofia Coppola Said, “Why Don’t I Try These On For You?”
Image
Scarlett Johansson Lost In Translation (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Scarlett Johansson almost refused to wear the sheer pink underwear in Lost in Translation’s iconic opening scene. As the thought of standing in minimal clothing on camera wasn’t exactly appealing. But director Sofia Coppola had a clever trick up her sleeve to convince her actress to wear them.

Lost in Translation is a film that sticks with you. A quiet, introspective masterpiece about loneliness, connection, and finding meaning in unexpected places. Johansson plays Charlotte, a young woman stuck in a life rut. Bill Murray’s Bob Harris is a fading movie star in the middle of a midlife crisis. They meet in Tokyo, forming an unlikely bond.

The flick was a smash hit, earning Coppola an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Murray got an Oscar nomination, too (but lost to Sean Penn in Mystic River). Meanwhile, Johansson—who delivered...

‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Trailer: Peter Parker’s Origin Story Finds Him Teaming With a Surprising New Mentor
Image
Disney+ released the official trailer for Marvel Animation’s upcoming series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Sunday.

The official logline describes the show as “an animated series that follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.”

The trailer kicks off with the classic theme song (“Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can”) that was written by Paul Francis Webster and Bob Harris for the 1967 cartoon series.

It then shows Peter (voiced by Hudson Thomas) as he wakes up, runs late for school and gets hit by a car. “Petey’s always been a bit clumsy,” as he is described.

While in class, Peter sees a crime of some sort being committed outside the window and makes an awkward exit: “Mr. Campbell, uh I remembered I left something in the bathroom.

Les Proies (1971)
Sofia Coppola’s Movies, Ranked
Les Proies (1971)
After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Coppola’s features to date. David Robb

Editor’s Note: This entry was originally published on June 23, 2017.

9. The Bling Ring (2013)

As this film’s Bling Ringers raid sprawling manses for McQueen sunglasses, Alaia dresses, and Birkin bags, Coppola responds with a propulsive collage of modern pop iconography, filling the screen with paparazzi shots, step-and-repeat footage,...

Lost in Translation Is Not A Romance Movie–And That's Important
Image
Lost in Translation is not a typical romance movie; it focuses more on the profound kinship formed between two lonely individuals in Tokyo. The film purposely avoids the usual sentimental and melodramatic elements found in traditional romance films. The ambiguous ending leaves viewers uncertain about the future of Bob and Charlotte's relationship.

On the surface, Sofia Coppola's sophomore feature Lost in Translation appears to be a romance movie. However, the film actually drew critical acclaim for bucking the traditional trends and tropes of the romantic movie formula. Instead, it delivers a refreshingly unsentimental glimpse at two wayward souls coming together in Tokyo, Japan. The story follows Bob Harris (Bill Murray), a washed-up American actor resorting to Japanese whiskey commercials, and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a Yale philosophy graduate touring Tokyo with her neglectful boyfriend. Despite their glaring differences, Bob and Charlotte become kindred spirits when they meet in a Japanese...

Lost in Translation and 20 Years of Debating an Ending Whisper
Image
Over the course of 100 minutes, Lost in Translation explores the relationship between two lost souls. Romantic and well-observed, with rich performances from Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, the movie captures the longing shared by two people who don’t belong anywhere. And yet, despite the film’s many achievements, the conversation around Lost in Translation has been dominated by one question: “What did he say?”

At the end of the film, aging actor Bob Harris (Murray) hugs young grad student and newlywed Charlotte and whispers something in her ear. Writer-director Sofia Coppola puts just enough of the whisper into the mix to suggest that maybe it should be heard by a viewer who pays enough attention, but not enough to register, even with subtitles.

For 20 years, some corners of film fandom have obsessed over the question, as if hearing that brief bit of dialogue would unlock the meaning of the...

Sofia Coppola Reflects on Lost in Translation's Age Gap Between Bill Murray & Scarlett Johansson
Image
Lost in Translation, directed by Sofia Coppola, remains a beloved classic in Hollywood, but some aspects of the story may feel outdated after 20 years. An interview with Coppola reveals that some viewers have questioned the age gap between the film's protagonists, something she did not consider much at the time of making the film. Coppola's upcoming film, Priscilla, based on Elvis Presley's wife, has received positive reviews, but the Elvis estate is not happy with certain aspects of the film.

Lost in Translation, the second feature film from director Sofia Coppola, has become one of her most popular classics and a cult films within the Hollywood's cinematographic industry. However, now that 20 years have passed since its premiere, some details of the story now feel a little outdated.

Sofia Coppola Addresses Bill Murray & Scarlett Johansson's Age Gap in Lost in Translation
Image
Filmmaker Sofia Coppola doesn't really want to spend much time thinking about the age gap between the main characters in her 20-year-old film Lost in Translation, but she revealed what her mindset was at the time of making the movie.

Two decades ago, Lost in Translation was released in theaters, and the acclaimed film went on to become a big success. It surpassed $118 million at the box office with a budget of around just $4 million. Coppola won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay as the writer of the film, which had also garnered several other nominations. Upon reaching the movie's 20th anniversary, Coppola commented on Lost in Translation in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

One of the most talked-about movies at this year’s Venice Film Festival was Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s vividly realized portrait of how 14-year-old Priscilla Presley fell under the spell of Elvis Presley, the rock & roll icon who was 24 when they first met. The filmmaker has earned her best reviews in years for the drama, and its star, Cailee Spaeny, took home the fest’s Best Actress award.

10 Iconic Movie Couples With The Creepiest Age Gaps
Image
Hollywood has a long history of depicting couples with significant age gaps, from classics like Casablanca to modern films like Lost in Translation. Many beloved movie couples have age gaps that are now seen as inappropriate, with older male actors paired with much younger actresses. While some of these couples are still fondly remembered for their romantic chemistry, their age gaps raise concerns and wouldn't be seen as acceptable in real life.

Some of the most iconic of Hollywood’s couples have shared concerning age gaps in their films, despite how loved or hated they may be. This isn’t just a recent phenomenon noticed among screen couples in Jurassic Park, Lost in Translation, or even the Marvel Cinematic Universe but has been a rather ordinary norm since the times of classics like Casablanca and Singin’ In The Rain. In cases like the coming-of-age comedy The Graduate or even the controversial psychological drama Lolita,...

20 Years Later, Lost in Translation's Greatest Mystery Remains Unsolved
Image
Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation, starring Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, was one of the most renowned films of 2003. It garnered endless praise for the performances of the two leads as well as Coppola's direction and script, which ultimately led to it taking home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (as well as two other nominations that it didn't win). Though it's earned a bit more criticism as time has gone on, Lost in Translation remains a staple in Coppola's filmography.

Lost in Translation follows Bob Harris (Murray), a washed-up movie star having a midlife crisis, and Charlotte (Johansson), a recently-married college graduate who's not sure who she is yet, during a week they both spend alone in Tokyo. They run into each other at the hotel bar, strike up a conversation and become fast friends. They then turn to each other when they are in need of...

'Lost in Translation': The True Story Behind Bill Murray's Whiskey Ad
Image
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is one of the central characters in Lost in Translation, a man who was once a great actor and who perhaps still could have been if he didn’t trade his chance to perform in a play, for a million dollar commercial deal with Suntory Whiskey in Japan. Yes, Bob is plagued by an existential crisis: sipping his whiskey in the Tokyo Park Hyatt bar, contemplating buying a Porsche, and considering giving up pasta for Japanese food in a last-ditch effort to get healthy. But despite Bob’s regrets about selling himself out, he admits he is glad that the Suntory Whiskey “works.” Although Bob is fictional, Japan’s Suntory Whiskey is not, and this year Suntory celebrated its 100th year anniversary. Funnily enough, Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola also directed the 100th anniversary tribute video in celebration of Suntory, which not only included snippets from Lost in Translation,...

Several Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse Cameos Will Delight Animation Fans
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

Spider-Man has almost as long a history in animation as he does in the comic pages where he originated. That's why the "Spider-Verse" films' conceit — placing different Spider-People together and representing them with different styles of animation — is so clever. While the original "Into the Spider-Verse" featured only six Spider-People teaming up, the sequel "Across the Spider-Verse" takes things into overdrive with hundreds of them. This fulfills the promise of a Spider-Verse.

Most of these Spider-People are simple cameos or easter eggs -- they're all going about their day in Miguel O'Hara's (Oscar Isaac) citadel on Earth-928 and the film rarely lingers on them. However, knowledgeable Spider-Fans will spot some stars among the crowd. "Across the Spider-Verse" treats all Spider-Man audiovisual media as part of one big web. So, like how "Spider-Man: No Way Home" united the live-action Spider-Man actors,...

Ghostbusters Cast & Character Guide
Image
The original Ghostbusters was one of the defining movies of its decade, and its cast comprised some of the biggest stars in comedy at the time. Released to immediate fanfare in 1984, Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon and has had a lasting impact as a franchise well into the 21st century through sequels and other media. With its mix of acerbic wit and goofball humor, the movie has its own comedic language that few films have been able to replicate. Ultimately, Ghostbusters shines because of its cast, which represents the cream of the comedy crop of the 1980s.

One of Ghostbusters' strongest elements is its buddy comedy angle, and the assembled cast of ghost-hunting heroes exudes a sense of camaraderie and fun. Outside the main characters of the original Ghostbusters, the movie has a sparse, but well-cast set of supporting players who offer a contrast to the goofy energy of the leads.

Film Review: Lost In Translation (2003) by Sofia Coppola
Although some people do not like to admit it, there are few modern films which have shaped the way cinemagoers perceive Japan quite as significant as Sofia Coppola’s 2003 indie hit “Lost in Translation”. Apart from numerous awards and honors the film’s crew and cast received for their work on the film, perhaps the most important aspects to it was that it propelled the careers of Sofia Coppola and actress Scarlett Johansson, as well as how it changed the way actor Bill Murray was seen by moviegoers. Until now, many critics and moviegoers alike name the film as one of the most important titles of the last twenty years, a work whose influence can still be felt today.

“Lost in Translation” will be screened by Japan Society

However, as the film was released in Japan, the reception from audiences and critics alike was somewhat lukewarm. In his article for The Christian Science Monitor,...

‘Wild Rose’ Review: A Breakout Turn and Honest Script Elevate Overt Sentimentality
Tom Harper’s Wild Rose is a film whose fixation on authenticity is directly at odds with its own craft. A corrective to the recent spate of self-absorbed superstar narratives, this is an underdog-musician story that’s appealingly as much about responsibility as sex and drugs, even as it’s repeatedly hamstrung by overly sentimental direction– a saccharine tone all the more disappointing given the strength of an alternately brittle and soulful script from TV veteran Nicole Taylor.

With cowboy boots high enough for Dolly Parton, pipes like Loretta Lynn, and a chip on her shoulder a mile wide from a half-lifetime of bad choices, the crimson haired Rose-Lynn (meteoric star Jessie Buckley) is the picture of Country’s outlaw spirit. In house arrest after being picked up for a less-than-legal delivery job, she’s now poorly acclimating to her old life as a mother of young son and daughter.

Flashback: See Linda Ronstadt’s Stunning Performance of the Eagles’ ‘Desperado’ in 1975
Forty-six years ago this week, the Eagles released their sophomore LP Desperado. While not a concept album per se, the initial idea for the record was for the group to write about anti-heroes, drawing parallels between the Old West outlaw and the rock & roll lifestyle. The title cut would mark the first-ever co-write for the group’s Don Henley and Glenn Frey.

“The basic premise was that, like the outlaws, rock & roll bands lived outside the ‘laws of normality,’ we were not part of ‘conventional society,’” Henley told Rolling Stone...

Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Lost in Translation Reunion! Bill Murray Teams with Sofia Coppola for New Movie
Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Just over 15 years after Bill Murray played a washed up actor in Lost in Translation, which Sofia Coppola wrote and directed, the two will work together again on the upcoming film On the Rocks.

The movie will tell the story of a young mom who reconnects with her playboy father on an adventure through New York. Coppola — who won the 2004 Academy Award for best writing for her job on Lost in Translation — will produce, write and direct the father-daughter flick.

Murray, 68, also received critical acclaim for his portrayal of past-his-prime movie star Bob Harris in the 2003 drama, with a best...

Review: "Made" (1972) Starring Carol White And Ron Harper; UK Blu-ray Edition From Network Distributing
By Tim Greaves

Director John Mackenzie's powerful and captivating 1972 kitchen sink drama Made has been given the opportunity to find a new audience via a tasty UK Blu-Ray release from Network Distributing.

Valerie Marshall (Carol White) is a single mother eking out a meagre living as a London telephone exchange operator whilst simultaneously caring for her multiple-sclerosis-stricken mother (Margery Mason). Seemingly destined never to find true happiness and weary of the inapposite attentions of would-be suitors, Valerie agrees to assist priest and family friend Father Dyson (John Castle) in chaperoning a bunch of underprivileged youths on a day trip to the seaside. There she meets folk singer Mike Preston (Roy Harper), whose outwardly relaxed approach to life just might pave her way to salvation.

A slightly ponderous and largely dispiriting snapshot of early 1970s lower class Britain, I'll openly confess that when I first saw Made I was convinced it would leave me cold.
