BBC Removes Gaza Film From iPlayer Amid Growing Concerns About Contributors’ Links To Hamas
Image
The BBC has removed from iPlayer a documentary about the Gaza crisis that was narrated by the child of a Hamas minister.

The British broadcaster has taken the unusual step of deleting Gaza: How To Survive a Warzone from its streaming service amid growing concerns that other contributors had links to Hamas, which is proscribed as a terror group by the UK government.

In a statement on Friday, the BBC said: “There have been continuing questions raised about the programme and in the light of these, we are conducting further due diligence with the production company. The programme will not be available on iPlayer while this is taking place.”

The BBC previously apologized for failing to disclose that 14-year-old Abdullah Al-Yazouri, the film’s English-speaking narrator, was the son of Ayman Al-Yazouri, the deputy minister of agriculture in Gaza’s Hamas-run government. A title card was added to the film...

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 Breaks Format To Deliver A Story Fans Have Wanted For Years
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 5.

One of the many wonderful things about the "Star Trek" franchise is that there are plenty of different little sub-fandoms to dig into. There are Trekkies who can tell you everything there is to know about all of the most important Starfleet ships and the difference between their warp cores and nacelles. Elsewhere, there are fans who not only have a deep love of the Federation and its many captains, but who can also argue about how Kirk really "beat" the Kobayashi Maru all day. And then there are fans like me, who really freaking love the Alpha Quadrant's most violent and drunken alien species: the Klingons.

The Klingons have undergone some serious changes in the "Star Trek" universe over the years, both in appearance and characterization, but have consistently been a civilization bound by a number of antiquated rules...

BBC Boss Tim Davie Says Broadcaster Must “Be Nice” Amid “Whipped Up” Trans Rights Debate
Image
The BBC has a duty to “be nice” amid the fraught debate about transgender rights, according to the UK broadcaster’s director general.

Tim Davie told lawmakers on Wednesday that the BBC’s detractors were attempting to whip up a “deeply damaging” narrative around the corporation’s output on gender identity issues.

He was giving evidence to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee amid concern over a BBC complaint unit ruling against Radio 4 Today show presenter Justin Webb last month.

Webb was deemed to have broken editorial rules when he said “trans women, in other words males” during an item discussing whether biological males have an advantage in chess.

Davie was asked by Conservative MP Damian Green if the BBC was being “infused” by transgender ideology following the ruling against Webb.

The director general said BBC journalists are “doing a very good job” in difficult circumstances, but argued that Webb...

Cool Stuff: It's Time For Animaniacs, And Their Zany New Vinyl Soundtracks
Image
Warner Bros. has been in the news quite a bit this past year. Between talks of possible industry-shaking mergers and the current chaos surrounding "Coyote vs. Acme," it's starting to seem like the best course of action might be to call up whoever it was that let Ryan Gosling do a photoshoot on top of the Warner Bros. water tower, and kindly ask that they let the Animaniacs loose to cause a little chaos and release the movie.

For the somehow uninitiated, the Animaniacs consist of the Warner Brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen), Wakko (Jess Harnell), and the Warner Sister, Dot (Tress MacNeille), who ruled the '90s with their animated variety sketch series which included shorts centered on equally beloved characters like Pinky (Paulsen) and the Brain (Maurice Lamarche). What separated "The Animaniacs" from its contemporaries wasn't just the biting satire and classic 1930s animation style for the main characters,...

How Optimus Prime's Original Voice Actor Convinced Michael Bay To Cast Him In Transformers
Image
You might not know the name Peter Cullen, but I guarantee you know his voice. He's Eeyore in the "Winnie the Pooh" franchise, Monterey Jack in "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," the first voice of Karr in "Knight Rider," the vocalizations of the titular "Predator," and since he voiced Mario in the Donkey Kong segments of "Saturday Supercade," he's actually the first person to ever give Mario a voice in the English-speaking world. All of these roles border on iconic, but Cullen became a living legend by providing the voice of Optimus Prime in the "Transformers" franchise.

In 2022, for the film's 15-year anniversary, Paramount held an event celebrating all things "Transformers," and Peter Cullen spoke (via Comic Book Resource) about his journey from voicing Optimus Prime in the animated series to bringing the character to life in live action. Despite Cullen's history with the series, he still had to audition...

Danny DeVito Says He's 'Definitely' Open to a Penguin Return
Image
Perhaps we haven't seen the last of Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot. More than three decades ago, DeVito played The Penguin opposite Michael Keaton's Batman in the 1992 sequel Batman Returns. More recently, Keaton reprised his role as Batman from that film in The Flash. The exciting return has had some fans wondering if other characters from Tim Burton's Batman movies could also be showing up in a future DC project, and while nothing is official, DeVito says he'd be up for returning as The Penguin with a multiverse cameo.

"I would definitely consider doing it, yeah," DeVito told SFX magazine, per GamesRadar. "Batman Returns was a great part, it was operatic. You could just pull out all the stops. There were so many motivating things, so many things churning up inside of him."

DeVito continued, "Being the odd man out – the odd bird out – brought the character out of me.

New BBC Chair Must Have ‘Demonstrable Experience,’ Hiring Process Must be ‘Transparent’ Director General Tim Davie Says
Image
BBC director general Tim Davie has called for a “transparent” hiring process for the next chair of the corporation.

The previous BBC chair Richard Sharp resigned over his role in a 2020 loan to then U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Elan Closs Stephens has been appointed temporary acting chair.

Davie appeared before a U.K. Culture Media and Sport Committee parliamentary inquiry on the workings of the BBC on Tuesday and was asked what qualities and skills BBC needs for the new chair. “This is an incredibly precious institution, globally admired complex, right in the heart of the public eye. It needs a world class chair and we need an outstanding candidate to do that,” Davie told the committee.

BBC Director General Tim Davie On Phillip Schofield Debate: “Imbalances Of Power Are Dangerous & We Care About Them”
Image
“Imbalances of power are dangerous and we care about them,” BBC Director General Tim Davie said today, as he was questioned on the Phillip Schofield debate and accusations of toxicity on This Morning.

Speaking to the influential Culture, Media & Sport Committee (Cmsc), Davie acknowledged there are “imbalances” in the “strange TV industry, where you have people earning talent salaries verses producer salaries.”

“Your concerns are well placed,” he told Committee Chair Caroline Dinenage. “Imbalances of power are dangerous and we care about them. Culturally I am very direct about that not being something I want to see at this organization.”

Davie said he speaks from experience. As Acting Director General 10 years ago, he shepherded the BBC through the first few months of the Jimmy Savile scandal. More recently, he has appointed an independent Kc to probe the conduct of former Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood following accusations about misconduct taking...

Now the show has a general release date, and new fans may have questions. While Looniversity clearly wears its Warner Bros. animation credentials on its sleeve, its source material is slightly less well known. The Cast Of The Animaniacs On 30 Years Of Being Zany To The Max [Exclusive Interview]
Image
Since the very beginning, absurdity has been the name of the game for "The Animaniacs." Following the adventures of the Warner Brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen), Wakko (Jess Harnell), and the Warner Sister, Dot (Tress MacNeille), "The Animaniacs" is a beloved variety sketch series filled with innuendos, enough catchy songs to justify its own ranking, timely parodies, and a slew of spotlight characters like Pinky (Paulsen) and the Brain (Maurice Lamarche). Canonically speaking, the characters were first drawn in 1929, which explains their rubber-hose animated style, but were deemed too weird to release and were locked up in the Warner Bros. water tower ... until one day, they escaped.

The first series lasted for 99 episodes and the feature-length film "Wakko's Wish," but was given a revival in 2020 to bring the zany antics of "The Animaniacs" to a brand new generation. The show is one of the few in existence to find a way...

This Snotty Joke Was Just 'Too Gross' For The Tick Animated Series
Image
Before "The Tick," and before "The Tick," but after "The Tick," there was "The Tick," the short-lived animated series that ran on Fox from 1994 to 1996.

The Tick was a parody superhero character originally created by cartoonist Ben Edlund in 1986. The character was a massive pile of muscles wrapped in a skin-tight blue bodysuit, and sporting a tiny pair of tick antennae on his head. He was incredibly strong, incredibly noble, and not at all bright. The Tick was just as in love with the iconography of superherodom as he was with committing acts of justice. He would frequently narrate his own adventures. Ironically, his powers and outfit had absolutely nothing to do with pesky, blood-sucking arachnids. When a thug points out to the Tick that most ticks have eight legs, he confidently retorts "How do you know I don't?"

In the 1994 "The Tick" animated series, the title hero was voiced by Townsend Coleman,...

Animaniacs Season 3 Trailer Teases The Warners' Epic Final Adventure
Image
The Animaniacs and their friends set off on their last wacky adventures in the official season 3 trailer. Jess Harnell, Rob Paulsen, and Tress MacNeille's chaotic cartoon creatures earned acclaim throughout the show's original five-season run from 1993 to 1998. Animaniacs returned in 2020 after 22 years for a new season that would air on Hulu as part of a two-season order, with the concluding season 3 being ordered in early 2021.

After a long hiatus since season 2 concluded in November 2021, the long-awaited trailer for Animaniacs season 3 was finally released by Hulu on their YouTube channel ahead of season 3's premiere on February 17, just over two years since Animaniacs season 3 was initially announced.

In the new trailer above, Wakko (Harnell), Yakko (Paulsen), and Dot (MacNeille) break free of their water tower prison for more capers that poke fun at pop culture's most recognizable tales. Meanwhile, Pinky (Paulsen) and the Brain (Maurice Lamarche) also return for more world-conquering schemes,...

And keep an eye out for season one favorites Starbox & Cindy, as well as some rejected Animaniacs characters that were left on the cutting room floor.” Hulu Returning for Season 2 are original voice actors Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, and Tress MacNeille as the titular Yakko,...

‘Animaniacs’ EP Wellesley Wild on the Hulu Reboot: ‘Keep the F—ing Lightning in the Bottle’
Image
They’re Animaniacs, and they’re rebooting to the max.

In the first big musical number of the long-awaited reboot to the beloved ‘90s animated series, the three deranged siblings who live in the Warner Bros. water tower — Yakko, Wakko and Dot — get caught up on the last 22 years since Steven Spielberg and Tom Ruegger’s original “Animaniacs” went off the air. Hanging chads, YouTube, climate change, all of it.

That comes with the in-sketch caveat that, given the long lead time on animation production, the show’s writers are penning script in 2018, and therefore don’t know the results of this year’s presidential election. But little did the show’s revivers know that the election would actually be the most predictable event scheduled for 2020.

“We were like, ‘Ok, what’s gonna happen? What are the big events coming up? Let’s write to those,’” “Animaniacs” executive producer and...

Hulu’s ‘Animaniacs’ Reboot Runs in Circles Trying Old Tricks in a New World: TV Review
Image
The new “Animaniacs,” premiering on Hulu 27 years after it first debuted and in a world where the iconic WB water tower recently got an HBO Max makeover, is well aware of what its preemptive critics might think of it. In one of the first new episodes, for instance, Warner brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen), Wakko (Jess Harnell) and their Warner sister Dot (Tress MacNeille) sing a peppy song about Hollywood’s conveyer belt of reboots that ends with them all sitting on a giant pile of cash while the Hulu logo blares behind them in bright neon. In the tweaked opening credits, one of TV’s most enduring theme songs gets pointed lyric updates advising mad nerds to remember that the “Animaniacs” “did meta first,” and assuring the audience that this reboot is appropriately “gender neutral” and “ethnically diverse” for its new era. (Sure.) So while the 1993 “Animaniacs” was aggressively self-aware,...

‘Animaniacs’ Revival Misses the Zany Magic of the Original
Image
Tom Ruegger wanted no part of a Tiny Toon Adventures spin-off. The animation vet had created the Tiny Toons — kids inspired by the original Looney Tunes characters, now learning comedy from Bugs Bunny and friends — but was already burnt out on them when he was asked if he could build a new show around Plucky Duck or one of Babs and Buster Bunny’s other classmates. “We’ve had it up to here with Tiny Toons,” Ruegger says he replied. “We’re about cooked on them. Let’s do some new stuff.

Hulu’s New ‘Animaniacs’ Features Orchestral Score by Returning Emmy-Winning Composers
Image
When “Animaniacs” returns with all-new episodes Nov. 20 on Hulu, a key ingredient of the original animated series will also return: orchestral music by Steve and Julie Bernstein, two of the series’ primary composers from its 1993-98 run.

Five of the show’s eight Daytime Emmy Awards were won by the “Animaniacs” music team, including the Bernsteins, who have spent most of their careers in Warner Bros. animation, from “Tiny Toons” and “Taz-Mania” to “Pinky and the Brain” and “Histeria!”

And while their work brings a sonic consistency to Warner brothers Yakko (voiced by Rob Paulsen) and Wakko (Jess Harnell), and Warner sister Dot (Tress MacNeille) — as well as world-domination-seeking Pinky (Paulsen) and the Brain (Maurice Lamarche) — what’s unusual is the presence of 30 to 40 musicians on every score.

Virtually all TV animation is now scored with samples and synthesizers emulating the sound of an orchestra, with the occasional addition of...

Watch: Animaniacs Reboot Trailer Reveals First Look At Pinky And The Brain
Image
The Animaniacs are back, and so are Pinky and the Brain! Hulu revealed our first look at the reboot of the classic 90s cartoon at the recent virtual New York Comic Con, with a hilarious Jurassic Park-themed promo, and now we’ve got this proper trailer that unveils some actual footage from the show, including a glimpse of those lab rats who are always trying to take over the world.

22 years after Animaniacs wrapped up its original run, the Warner Brothers Yakko and Wakko and their sister Dot are back for more of the series’ patented mix of cartoon mayhem and satirical humor that makes it still a great watch for adults. Of course, the reboot will also mine a lot of comedy from the characters interacting with the modern world – like Pinky getting catfished online by an actual catfish and Yakko swallowing the wrong kind of tablet. And hey,...

‘Animaniacs’ Returns After 22 Years With Hulu Show: Watch the Trailer
Image
After 22 years off the air, Animaniacs is back with a whole lot of pent-up zaniness. The rebooted animated series premieres on November 20th on Hulu.

As seen in the trailer, all the characters from the classic Nineties cartoon have returned: the Warner brothers Yakko and Wakko, their sister Dot, and the dastardly side villains Pinky and the Brain. Just like with the original show, the new Animaniacs combines kid-friendly education and goofy slapstick with more adult-friendly humor and social commentary. The teaser even riffs on the concept of the reboot itself,...

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
First Look at Animaniacs Reboot
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
We’re a month away from getting Animaniacs back and it’s not a moment too soon. Yakko, Wacko, and Dot have been missing since the late-90s and, honestly, it was probably more due to fatigue than anything else. Sometimes you need to rest a property, then bring it back down the line. Animaniacs is a very welcome return, but at the same time, we don’t want it to be too different. More specifically, it doesn’t need to be too different. Add a new splash of paint and modernize it without straying too far, but keep the soul the same.

Things were already on the right track with the news that they were bringing back all the original voice actors. Apparently, it was a situation where Steven Spielberg wanted all of them back or it wasn’t happening.
