Christophe Honoré fans have much to celebrate this January. Ahead of his latest feature, the meta Chiara Mastroianni-led Cannes selection Marcello Mio, arriving in U.S. theaters on January 31 from Strand Releasing, one of his most provocative, acclaimed earlier films has been restored. Coming from KimStim Films, his 2004 psychosexual drama Ma Mère, starring Isabelle Huppert and Louis Garrel, will open at the IFC Center a week earlier on January 24. Ahead of this release, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the new trailer for the Nc-17-rated feature.

Diwa Shah‘s debut feature film, Bahadur the Brave (2023), takes place in an Indian hill station town amid the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, many migrant workers, especially from Nepal, have returned to their hometowns owing to the statewide lockdown. This has given rise to a labor crisis in the region. The protagonist, Hansi (Rupesh Lama), a migrant laborer, sees this moment of shortage of laborers as an opportunity to enhance his income. His brother-in-law, Dil Bahadur (Rahul Mukhia), wants Hansi to return to his family. But Hansi is determined to stay and make the most of the situation. Dil Bahadur and Hansi get employed at a warehouse, where they discover illicit alcohol being stored. Unable to resist their temptation, they decide to take a small amount for themselves. The scenario worsens when the owner accuses Dil Bahadur of stealing, and Hansi finds it an opportunity to get rid of him.

Swedish pic Mother, Couch! starring Taylor Russell and Ewan McGregor alongside Ellen Burstyn is one of the titles San Sebastian has set to compete for its New Directors award during its 71st edition, running September 22 — 30.

The film is from the debut feature filmmaker Niclas Larsson and follows three estranged children who are brought together when their mother refuses to move from a couch in a furniture store. The previously unannounced film is a US – Danish – Swedish co-production. Unlike the other titles announced today, the mystery project had no accompanying image.

Eleven productions from nineteen countries will compete for San Sebastian’s Kutxabank-New Directors Award. Of all the selected movies, seven are debut works, while the rest are second features.
