Image
Fabulous Films have released Series 2 of Dr Death on DVD.

Season Two of Dr. Death, based on the hit Wondery podcast, follows the real-life story of Italian surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, a “Miracle Man” once seen as pioneering transplant surgeon, who performed experimental surgeries on his patients without their consent.

Macchiarini was the subject of Season 3 of the Dr Death podcast but is season two of the TV series. Both series have performed well on Rotten Tomatoes (averaging 93% and 80% Tomatometer ratings respectively).

“Disturbing and well-acted, Dr. Death is about what we wish and hope for and the cruel realization of what’s actually possible.” – Variety.com

Édgar Ramírez who plays Paolo Macchiarini is from Venezuela. As well as speaking Spanish and English, he speaks French, Italian and German. Ramirez was nominated for 2 Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globes for his roles in American Crime Story and Carlos the Jackal. Ramirez’s father was a military attache.

Lukas Moodysson in Together (2000)
Together 99 review – quarter-century renuion for Lukas Moodysson’s Swedish commune comedy
Lukas Moodysson in Together (2000)
Moodysson reunites the gang of hippies from his joyful 2000 sendup for a fun yet slightly sour sequel

More than 20 years ago, Lukas Moodysson directed the Swedish comedy Together: set in 1975, it was about a bunch of hippies living in a Stockholm commune on a diet of chickpeas and porridge. The film gently poked fun at the hopeless lefties – failing at open relationships, never quite managing to live up to their ideals – and it was hard to know which was woollier, their jumpers or their politics. Now comes a slightly disappointing sequel set 24 years later, featuring the same cast, but lower levels of warmth and affection. It’s a less lovable film; it is directed, I felt, with a bit of a sneer.

The year is 1999. The population of the commune has dwindled to two men: bearded Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten) and gentle-souled artist Klasse (Shanti Roney). They call themselves a commune,...

Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out who’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies.

Édgar Ramírez and Mandy Moore Talk ‘Dr. Death’ Research and Takeaways: “No One Is Above Being Deceived”
Image
An investigative journalist falls for her subject: A handsome, world-renowned surgeon.

That logline could be the start of a rom-com. Instead, it’s the beginning of a sinister story, one that’s told on Dr. Death.

The second season of the Peacock anthology based on the Wondery podcast brings to screen the true-crime story of Paolo Macchiarini (played by Édgar Ramírez), the pioneering Italian surgeon whose revolutionary biosynthetic tracheas could be a medical solution to the traditional trachea transplant. His work is so impressive, he becomes the subject of a TV profile from New York journalist, and former NBC producer, Benita Alexander (Mandy Moore), who — spoiler alert — ends up contributing to a much more important Vanity Fair article that ultimately unmasks the real Paolo Macchiarini.

But in the time between their first encounter in 2013 and that 2016 article, the pair fall in love. A whirlwind romance of sorts ensues, where Alexander...

‘Dr. Death’ Season 2 Review: Edgar Ramirez and Mandy Moore in a Half-Effective Tale of Science and Seduction
Image
The story of Peacock’s Dr. Death in its second season is really two stories, which intersect through duplicitous surgeon Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez).

In one, a respected journalist (Mandy Moore’s Benita) falls in love with a con man, and then eventually retakes control of her life by taking him down. In the other, doctors grow suspicious of, and then work to stop, a celebrated colleague whose supposedly miraculous procedures are actually killing his patients.

Late in the season, a skeptical reporter tells Benita that the former narrative is the more interesting one, since it’s simpler, juicier, more relatable. But the show, created by Ashley Michel Hoban, only really comes alive in the latter. Stitched together, the two halves make for a lumpy, if occasionally gripping, whole.

Though he’s the reason we’re all here, Paolo himself remains something of an enigma. The premiere foreshadows his downfall...

Mandy Moore and Edgar Ramírez Paint a Disturbing Portrait of Deceit, Romance and Complicity in ‘Dr. Death’ Season 2: TV Review
Image
As we sit in the shadows of the Covid-19 pandemic in a society where conspiracy theories and “personal research” are touted, some regard the medical field skeptically. However, many still view healthcare professionals in the highest regard, often without reproach. The general praise of doctors has allowed a few in the profession to get away with murder, literally. Based on the Wondery podcast, “Dr. Death: Miracle Man,” the second season of Peacock’s anthology series “Dr. Death” follows the real-life story of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini (Edgar Ramírez), whose web of deception stretched and spun across his private and professional lives, destroying anyone who dared to stand in his way. A whirlwind romance contrasting against horrific malpractice, the eight-episode season is a solid and compelling tale of the lies we tell ourselves when we are desperate for hope.

Dr. Death Season 2, Starring Mandy Moore & Edgar Ramirez, Sets Peacock Premiere Date
Mandy Moore and Edgar Ramírez in Dr. Death (2021)
One of Peacock's most successful series, Dr. Death, will be back on the air before the year's end, and we couldn't be more excited.

The streaming service on Friday announced that Dr. Death Season 2 will premiere on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

If you're looking for your Christmas binge, you'll be happy to know that all eight episodes will be available on that date.

What is Dr. Death About?

Dr. Death Season 1, headlined by Joshua Jackson, was highly binge-able, featuring twists and turns that made us want to watch the next episode, so releasing all the episodes at once is a decent tactic.

Obviously, Christopher Duntsch's storyline wrapped up at the end of the season, so the anthology will feature a chilling new story for Dr. Death Season 2.

"This season of Dr. Death, based on the Wondery podcast, follows 'Miracle Man' Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon renowned for his innovative operations," reads the official Peacock description.

‘Together 99’ Review: Lukas Moodysson’s Sequel to His Great Swedish Commune Comedy Proves That He’s Now a Misanthrope
Image
In my opinion, the two greatest directors to emerge from the nexus of international cinema in the 1990s were both Scandinavian. One of them, Lars von Trier, became quite famous, for reasons both good and bad. The other director I’m speaking of never got famous, and his movies, even during his brief heyday, didn’t become art-house sensations. Yet for a time, Sweden’s Lukas Moodysson burned with an intoxicating flame.

He made three films of astonishing organic craft and humanistic purity: “Show Me Love” (1998), a shockingly lyrical love story about two high-school girls who fall for each other in a small town that didn’t look very tolerantly upon them; “Together” (2000), an ensemble comedy set in a sharehome commune in Stockholm in 1975 that is one of the only films that totally gets the counterculture; and “Lilya 4-ever” (2002), a haunting tragedy about a wayward girl in the former Soviet...

Lukas Moodysson in Together (2000)
TIFF Review: Lukas Moodysson’s Together 99 is a Bittersweet, Bruising Reunion
Lukas Moodysson in Together (2000)
The idyllic dream of leftist commune living, where resources and skills are shared for the greater good, needs a key ingredient to work: people. Two decades after Lukas Moodysson’s Together captured such a Stockholm community, we return to the lives of those we last saw in the 1970s––or in 2000, if you’re going by the film’s release––and the commune is running on fumes, comprising only Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten) and sole companion Klasse (Shanti Roney). As we’re introduced to the two discussing various economics and chores of their rather lonely way of life, it’s as dryly hilarious an opening as one could dream of, but the Swedish director knows this small-scale conceit isn’t wholly sustainable. Soon enough, many familiar (and some new) faces return for our lead’s 60th birthday celebration in a reunion that, not unlike the similar gap in Twin Peaks, conjures questions of shattered ideals,...

Petra is portrayed at two turning points of her life – the protagonist as a contemporary 50-year-old struggling through a divorce, and as a 15-year-old in the 1980s nearing the end of school while facing up to her own parents’ disintegrating relationship.

Shanti Roney (The Unlikely Murderer), Gustaf Hammarsten (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Jessica Liedberg (Together) and Adrian Macéus (The Truth Will Out) all feature in the film, which explores universal themes of love, angst and the search for oneself.

‘Old’ Review
Image
Stars: Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Alex Wolff, Abbey Lee, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Eliza Scanlen, Kathleen Chalfant, Gustaf Hammarsten, Thomasin McKenzie, Embeth Davidtz, M. Night Shyamalan | Written and Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

A day at the beach turns into the nightmare of a lifetime in Old, a supernatural thriller that marks something of a return to form for twist-meister M. Night Shyamalan. That’s not to say it’s entirely perfect, but the film’s overall experience more than compensates for its minor flaws.

The central concept couldn’t be simpler. A group of guests at a ritzy resort are directed to a stunningly located beach by their eager-to-please hotel manager (Gustaf Hammarsten). However, once they arrive on the beach (Shyamalan cameos as the bus driver), they find that they cannot leave, as any attempt to do so results in unconsciousness.

Things quickly go from bad to worse,...

Old – Review

There is hardly anything scarier to Hollywood, or even to American culture generally, than growing old, and something that makes aging happen much more rapidly would be terrifying. So M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller Old, where a group of people find themselves on a beach that compresses years of aging into hours, hits a cultural nerve, and has inherent potential for social commentary. Whether this director will use that potential, or even acknowledge it, is a big question going in to seeing this film.

A couple Guy (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Prisca (Vicky Krieps) and their 6-year-old son Trent (Nolan River) and 11-year-old Maddox (Alexa Swinton) check in to posh tropical resort for a family vacation.

Old Review: M. Night Shyamalan Delivers a Suspense Classic
Image
M. Night Shyamalan returns to peak filmmaking form with a brilliantly twisted thriller. Old takes a unique premise and runs with it to true existential horror. What begins as a dream vacation turns into an unshakeable nightmare for a pair of families and couples. The film builds with a slow burn until the characters grasp the severity of their predicament. Shyamalan shepherds his cast through a whirlwind of emotions. Do they accept a cruel fate or somehow persevere? Strap yourself in for a dark journey loaded with surprises.

Based on the graphic novel "Sandcastle" by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, Old starts innocently with a family visiting paradise. Guy (Gael García Bernal), Prisca (Vicky Krieps), their two children, eleven-year-old Maddox (Alexa Swinton) and six-year-old Trent (Nolan River), are overjoyed by the accommodations at the lush Animaka Resort. The manager (Gustaf Hammarsten) promises them an extra special experience at a secluded,...

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to strike fear into the hearts of conservative Americans in Brüno, his latest character to be immortalised in a mockumnetary feature film. Brüno is a gay, tactless Austrian fashion TV presenter and Cohen uses this character to expose prejudice and idiocy wherever he goes, particularly distressing, for example, are the fame-hungry parents willing to debase their children for one of Brüno’s projects.

There are times when I genuinely feared for Cohen’s safety – in his Middle East escapade and in the climatic wrestling scene...
