Maya and the Wave Review: Breaking Barriers in Big Wave Surfing
Image
Maya Gabeira’s story develops like a wave cresting and crashing—the kind of story that makes you question not just the limitations of athleticism but the entire fabric of society’s expectations. Her father, Fernando Gabeira, was a revolutionary figure in Brazil who lived his life in defiance of authoritarian regimes. This ancestry hung huge over Maya, imbuing her with a passionate sense of purpose that rivaled the waves she would eventually conquer. I reflect on how our backgrounds shape us, often in ways we only notice in retrospect.

Her debut in surfing at thirteen was more about discovery than rebellion—a search for identity amid puberty. Amazingly, a sport so inextricably linked to nature can become a canvas for personal expression and ambition. In just a few years, she went from a curious youngster with a surfboard to a world champion, earning accolades and sponsorships that would make any athlete jealous.

As Alec Baldwin Heads to Trial, Dueling ‘Rust’ Documentaries Become Part of Tangled Drama
Image
Among the many people who will be closely watching Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial when it begins in Santa Fe this week are two sets of documentarians covering parallel and potentially competing stories from the movie Rust.

Both sets of filmmakers have also become part of the still-unfolding tragedy of the indie Western set, where Baldwin accidentally shot 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021.

Rachel Mason, director of the 2019 Netflix documentary Circus of Books and a close family friend of Hutchins, has been making a film about the cinematographer since Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, recruited her and producer Julee Metz for the task in 2021 amid a flurry of media requests about his wife.

Mason and Metz, who are shooting their film for Liz Garbus and Dan Cogan’s production company, Story Syndicate, have interviewed members of the Rust cast and crew, including director Joel Souza and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who...

Pamela Anderson Recalls Kid Rock's Outburst During Borat Screening
Image
Pamela Anderson recently recalled musician and ex-husband Kid Rock's angry outburst during a screening of Borat!. The actor began her career in small parts on television and in film before she landed the role of "Tool Time" assistant Lisa on the hit sitcom, Home Improvement, starring Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Zachary Taylor Thomas. After two seasons, Anderson scored the role of Casey Jean "C.J." Parker in the wildly-popular lifeguard drama, Baywatch.

After a successful career in film and television throughout the 90s, Anderson was featured in a cameo role for Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 mockumentary film, Borat. The comedy saw the titular Kazakstani immigrant travel to the United States to marry Anderson. In her new memoir, Love, Pamela (via IndieWire), the actor reveals that Robert "Kid Rock" Ritchie had an explosive outburst during a special screening of Borat. A married couple at the time, the...

Pamela Anderson Alleges Ex Kid Rock Berated Her Over ‘Borat’ Cameo in Front of Steven Spielberg
Image
According to Pamela Anderson, her former husband Kid Rock despised her “Borat” cameo.

The “Baywatch” alum wrote in her memoir “Love, Pamela” that following a private screening at CAA founder and former NBCUniversal vice chairman Ron Meyer’s home with Steven Spielberg in attendance, Rock (aka Robert “Bob” James Ritchie) yelled at Anderson and called her a “whore,” among other expletives.

“We were about to move in, until the premiere of ‘Borat,'” Anderson wrote of her relationship with Rock. “The screening at Ron and Kelly Meyer’s house didn’t go well. Lots of important industry people were there: Steven Spielberg, Rick Rubin, Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabby Reece. I didn’t tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him.”

She continued, “I forgot about the part in the film that referenced the ‘sextape.’ Bob stormed out, calling me a whore and worse.

Borat Broke Up Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock
Pamela Anderson
Among Borat’s many very nice services is his habit of revealing grotesque misogyny, as Pamela Anderson found out firsthand when Sacha Baron Cohen’s most famous character saved her from moving in with Kid Rock.

As Anderson reveals in her new memoir Love, Pamela (via Rolling Stone), she and Kid Rock, aka Robert Ritchie, were ready to enter a serious phase of their relationship — that is, until they witnessed an advance screening of the 2006 film Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

“We were about to move in, until the premiere of Borat,” she wrote. “The screening at Ron and Kelly Meyer’s house didn’t go well. Lots of important industry people were there — Steven Spielberg, Rick Rubin, Laird Hamilton and his wife, Gabby Reece. I didn’t tell Bob I was in the movie, because I wanted to surprise him.”

In the film,...

Bob and I started spending more time in Detroit, his hometown. We had our big family wedding there, where Bob Seger and Hank Williams Jr. sang for us. Our life in Detroit was full of music. I took for granted all those nights with Hank, Zz Top, Uncle Kracker, Eminem, and Bob’s band. To be around such talent was inspiring. It was a true rock-and-roll lifestyle, gritty and soulful. Detroit had an energy all its own.

‘Maya and the Wave’ Review: Scaling Aquatic Heights With a Leading Big-Wave Surfer
Image
Though the field of women’s athletics has evolved and expanded considerably in recent years, it still seems well-nigh impossible for even the most elite competitors to get more than a tiny fraction of the recognition routinely accorded star sportsmen. That equation certainly seems borne out in “Maya and the Wave,” Stephanie Johnes’ portrait of leading female big wave surfer Maya Gabeira. This festival favorite (which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before kicking off Doc NYC) has some gaps in storytelling and contextualization that leave it feeling like a less-than-complete picture of the protagonist’s career to date. Yet the film more than succeeds in its primary goals of providing an inspirational role model plus lots of stupendous surfing footage, a combination that will enthrall most viewers.

It opens with majestic waves nearly 100 feet high breaking off resort town Nazare on Portugal’s western coast. In addition to being her current home,...

Maya Gabeira at an event for Maya and the Wave (2022)
TIFF Review: Maya and the Wave Examines the Fight for Equality in a Male-Dominated Sport
Maya Gabeira at an event for Maya and the Wave (2022)
At twenty-six years of age, Brazilian Maya Gabeira was at the top of her sport. A world champion. Winner of countless awards. On covers of magazines. And repped by Red Bull. Looking to progress her career from becoming a pioneer for women in the big wave surfing game to holding a World Record that stood next to the men in control of the sport, she and mentor Carlos Burle traveled to Nazaré, Portugal to accomplish the unthinkable. Everything came apart instead. Not only did she wipe out and almost die after two failed attempts at recovery left her unconscious and floating in the water, but Maya was ruthlessly dismissed by everyone in the industry as inexperienced, reckless, and a destructive force for surfing itself. She was all but abandoned.

What begins like a feel-good tale of one woman’s quest to be the best, Stephanie Johnes’ Maya and the Wave...

Robby Naish in The Longest Wave (2019)
Official Trailer for 'The Longest Wave' About a Legendary Windsurfer
Robby Naish in The Longest Wave (2019)
"I think we're lucky to have him still with us..." 1091 Pics has debuted a new official trailer for an adventure sports documentary titled The Longest Wave, which originally premiered in 2019 at the Doc NYC Film Festival. And it also played at last year's Cinequest Film Festival. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger travels the globe with legendary windsurfer and pioneering waterman Robby Naish as he figures out what to accomplish next in his life. The film also focuses on the usual adventure life challenges including getting older, injuries, family, and the risks of continuing to participate in considerably dangerous sports. The doc features Robby Naish, Kai Lenny, Laird Hamilton, and Gerry Lopez, among others. This seems like a nice companion to the other recent surfing doc Arc of Aleutia, or the classic The Endless Summer where they also seek the longest wave. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for ...

Seven Things We Learned About ‘Shangri-La’ and Rick Rubin from Showtime’s Series
Shangri-La (2019)
Showtime’s documentary series “Shangri-La” insists it is not a biographical documentary on uber-producer Rick Rubin, and it’s not meant as a four-hour advertisement for Rubin’s legendary Malibu studio, after which the four-part series is named … but it feels like a little bit of both those things. “Shangri-La” is primarily filmed at the studio where the viewer follows the barefooted Rubin around the property, eavesdropping on conversations he has with both likely characters — in the form of musicians such as Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and LL Cool J — to unlikely characters such as surfer Laird Hamilton, magician David Blaine and entrepreneur Seth Godin. Here are a few unexpected things we learned watching each hour-long episode.

Shangri-La is entirely devoid of any decoration.

The default look for most professional recording studios is walls covered with platinum records and glass cases littered with awards, plus personalized items from...

Harry Dean Stanton’s Last Film ‘Lucky’ Leads Crowded Specialty Box Office
Harry Dean Stanton in Lucky (2017)
Nearly 30 specialized films debuted in New York and/or Los Angeles this week. And with Yom Kippur falling right during the weekend, it meant most potentially high-end titles avoided the date (unlike last weekend).

Perhaps the highest-profile among them, “Our Souls at Night” starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, is debuting on Netflix film at the same time it played a few scattered big city play dates (grosses are not available).

Among those that opened, “Lucky” (Magnolia), Harry Dean Stanton’s second to last acting role, opened ahead of the rest. The initial limited full week (prior to its one-day showings) of “Pearl Jam: Let’s Play Two” (Abramorama) showed some strength, while “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House” (Sony Pictures Classics) fared less well in its limited showings. An exclusive opening in Los Angeles of the surfer documentary “Take Every Wave” (IFC) in Los Angeles was impressive,...

[[tmz:video id="0_w990f2bv"]] Surfing legend Laird Hamilton has some simple, and possibly controversial, shark advice -- if you're a woman and you're on your period, stay outta the water ... 'cause you're gonna get bit. We got Laird in Malibu, naturally, and asked him about the rash of shark sightings on SoCal beaches lately. He downplayed the danger ... well, unless you're a woman. Look, Laird's like the closest thing to a real-life Aquaman -- it's rare to catch...

Sundance Live: Watch Rory Kennedy Discuss ‘Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton’
Rory Kennedy
What drives a man to surf down an avalanche of 100 feet of water? It’s a question Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director/producer Rory Kennedy explores in her portrait of legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, which will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.

“Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton” includes incredible cinematography of Hamilton’s death-defying surfing, but the film is also an intimate look at the life of the man who became the legend. It’s a film that forced Kennedy into a wide array of shooting circumstances, requiring different techniques and equipment to capture the surfer’s story.

Kennedy is at Sundance for the film’s premiere and will be stopping by the Canon Creative Studio on Main Street in Park City to talk with IndieWire about shooting her latest film, which you can watch on Facebook Live.

'Point Break' Remake Featurette Shows Off Epic Motocross Stunts
Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, James Le Gros, and John Philbin in Point Break : Extrême Limite (1991)
Warner Bros.' Point Break remake, arriving this Christmas, takes the same premise of the original classic, featuring an FBI agent going undercover to infiltrate a highly-trained group of thieves. However, instead of the surfing world, the criminals in this remake are all extreme sports athletes, ranging from snowboarding, rock climbing, big wave surfing and much more. Today, Warner Bros. has released a new preview which examines one of these extreme sports, motocross.

Director Ericson Core explains that the motocross sequences were shot in Swingarm City, Utah, which he describes as "the Holy Grail of American motocross riding." We also hear from star Luke Bracey, who plays Johnny Utah in the remake, and actual motocross racer Steve Haughelstine, who explains that no one had ever ridden these "spines" before, and that the racers were getting dangerously close to the cameras during production. 'Point Break' Trailer #2 Takes Action to the Extreme
Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, James Le Gros, and John Philbin in Point Break : Extrême Limite (1991)
Following the first trailer from May and an action-packed preview released last week, Warner Bros. has debuted the second full trailer for their Point Break remake, arriving in theaters Christmas Day. Edgar Ramirez stars as the enigmatic Bodhi, who leads a group of thieves that have a far different agenda than most criminals. Luke Bracey plays FBI agent Johnny Utah, who infiltrates Bodhi's group and learns about their path to enlightenment.

You may recall that the first Point Break poster revealed a group of skydivers watching a huge pallet full of money plummet to the ground. We get to see how this scene unfolds in the new footage, which reveals that Bodhi and his crew need to "give more than they take," as he dumps millions of dollars on an unsuspecting village. In addition to the trailer, we also have even more posters which showcase some of the extreme sports in the remake.

'Point Break' Remake Poster and Surf Action Featurette
Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, James Le Gros, and John Philbin in Point Break : Extrême Limite (1991)
Ever since the Point Break remake was announced, we learned that this new version of Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 classic will still feature Johnny Utah and Bodhi, only this time the story will be set within the world of extreme sports, not just surfing. The first poster released back in May featured a skydiver chasing after a huge pile of money, but today, Warner Bros. released a new one-sheet that brings the remake back to its roots, showcasing the new Utah (Luke Bracey) and Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez) riding a massive wave. The original poster came just one day before the first trailer arrived, so that could mean the second trailer is just around the corner.

'Waterworld': 20 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Kevin Costner's Epic
It's been two decades, and still, the waves from the tsunami that was "Waterworld" have not receded.

Released 20 years ago this week (on July 28, 1995), the post-apocalyptic epic about the survivors of a drowned Earth became known as one of the most bloated flops of all time. That reputation wasn't really fair (the movie eventually broke even), but it was the then-most expensive movie ever made.

For a year before the film's release, stories leaked out about the waterlogged production's near-disastrous setbacks and its ego clashes between star Kevin Costner and his hand-picked director, Kevin Reynolds. Punsters were calling the movie "Fishtar" and "Kevin's Gate." By the time "Waterworld" finally came out, its underwhelming reception was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Costner's career as a bankable leading man has never really recovered.

In honor of the film turning 20 years old today, here are 20 facts you may not know about "Waterworld."

1. Initially, "Waterworld" was...
