Image
After a long wait and a whole lot of hype, Sinners has finally hit the screen, and well, it was worth it. While the film brought back the ever-electric Michael B. Jordan, reminding us why he’s a beast in front of the camera, it also handed the spotlight to a fresh face who’s quickly becoming the name on everyone’s lips, and that is Miles Caton.

He completely and utterly impressed viewers with his skills, and now he’s setting his sights on playing one of the hottest Spider-Man versions out there, Miles Morales. How Ryan Coogler Discovered Musical Prodigy Miles Caton for ‘Sinners’ and What the New Actor Learned from Michael B. Jordan
Image
When Ryan Coogler began developing his latest film “Sinners,” he knew one role would be particularly key: that of Sammie, the teenage cousin of Michael B. Jordan’s gangster twins Smoke and Stack.

Sammie is a young sharecropper and the son of a local preacher, but he dreams of becoming a blues musician, so the twins recruit him to perform at their new juke joint. There, his preternatural musical ability sets off a chain of supernatural events. It was a tricky part to cast, requiring a performer who could sing as powerfully as they deliver drama.

Coogler and casting director Francine Maisler fielded audition tapes from all over the world — some from musicians who’d never acted before, others from actors who’d never played music and everything in between. But one teenager’s tape stood out.

“He was just in the dark — like he didn’t turn his lights on.

Doechii Wants Fans to Feel "Liberated" by Her Upcoming Debut Album
Image
Doechii isn't trying to convince the world of her star power. As she explains to Popsugar, "I don't usually think about that." The 24-year-old Tampa, Fl, rapper isn't concerned with "setting intentions" with her music, either. That's why, so far, she's seamlessly tapped into different lanes of hip-hop without holding herself to a specific label. Her boom-bap, autobiographical breakthrough hit "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" sounds nothing like the upbeat, airy rhymes delivered on her 2022 single "Persuasive." The same could be said for the rest of her multifaceted discography. And the fun of that leaves her little time to cater to her fans' every whim and want - she's too busy making the music they need.

"It's up for them to have that," Doechii says, unconcerned with fans' expectations. "However the art is interpreted, that's how it's interpreted. All I know is how I want them to feel."

Doechii's always been "super imaginative" with her art.

How Tsu’s Marching Band Shocked the Grammys With an Album of Gospel, Hip-Hop, and Good Vibes
Image
On the eve of the 65th Grammy Awards, Nashville-based Tennessee State University’s Aristocrat of Bands was in Atlanta to compete at the Hbcu All-Star Battle of the Bands against schools like North Carolina A&t, Alabama State, and Bethune-Cookman. The student musicians took the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for their turn and, before their high-stepping performance began, they quickly formed into the shape of a Grammy statuette.

It was a mighty flex, but they were certainly the only band in the building who could say they had a Grammy nomination.

Meet Adamma and Adanne Ebo, the Twin Filmmakers Behind Sundance Stunner ‘Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul’
Image
Have you ever heard of praise miming?

It’s a style of praise dance popular in some Black churches, where performers swap lyrical movement for miming and often wear mimes’ traditional white face makeup. This form of worship plays a central role in “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul,” the Sundance stunner from identical twin sisters, writer-director Adamma and producer Adanne Ebo.

Their film follows pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and his first lady Trinitie (Regina Hall) as they aim to rebuild their congregation after a scandal effectively closes their Atlanta megachurch, which maxed out around 26,000 worshippers. The pastor and first lady hire a documentary crew to chronicle their comeback, but the road to redemption — especially in the competitive business of corporatized and commodified Christianity — doesn’t prove easy.

In the 2018 short film of the same name, the couple stand on the side of the road holding a sign that says “Honk for Jesus,...

Fred Hammond Knew He Would Face Backlash for Working With Kanye West — He Just Didn’t Care
Snoop Dogg in 90210 Beverly Hills - Nouvelle génération (2008)
When Snoop Dogg recorded a gospel album in 2018, almost every song included a feature from a prominent gospel performer — Marvin Sapp, Tye Tribbett, the Clark Sisters, and many more. This is a classic crossover play: A popular musical outsider recruits key insiders to smooth his transition into a new genre.

But some of those insiders took a beating for agreeing to collaborate with someone from outside of gospel. “I lost a couple best friends — a husband and wife team walked away from me, called me a sinner,” said Fred Hammond,...

The 2,000 people inside of Fox Theatre on Friday night were feverishly excited. Eager stans followed Kanye West wherever he appeared; to the stage, underneath his balcony, to the soundboard. Security struggled to keep fans out of the aisles, in their sections, or even on the ground. “Get off those seats! You are not at home,” one guard yelled from the row, flashing a light inside the dark theatre. West would never perform, but no one seemed to care.

“We’re going to show y’all three things tonight,” West told...
