Jim Shooter, Teenage Comics Writer Who Revolutionized Marvel as Editor-in-Chief, Dies at 73
Image
Jim Shooter, the comics industry titan who went from teenage writing prodigy to seminal but divisive editor-in-chief for Marvel Comics in the 1980s, has died after a battle with esophageal cancer. He was 73.

His death was announced Monday on Facebook by writer-editor Mark Waid and confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by his son, Benjamin Shooter.

Shooter came of age in an industry that was both staid and stuck in traditions yet unusually open in a way that a phone call from an editor to a kid could make dreams come true.

He wrote stories that he sent into National Comics — as DC was known at the time — in the mid-1960s when he was in his early teens, prompting an out of the blue phone call from legendary editor Mort Weisinger, who would buy the stories and put Shooter on the payroll. It was a boon for the youngster, who...

Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Almost Joined The G.I. Joe - Here's What Went Wrong
Image
Yes, this is real. Rocky Balboa, the underdog Philadelphia boxer created by Sylvester Stallone for the seminal 1976 sports movie "Rocky," was once included as a member of G.I. Joe. It seems that Rocky's powerful punches -- and ability to take them -- made him ideally suited to fight the high-tech international terrorist organization Cobra. As such, he became a team member with outlandish ultra-soldiers like Blowtorch, Gung-Ho, Snake Eyes, and, uh, Footloose.

The version of G.I. Joe in question was part of the property's popular rebranding from 1982. The then-new brand was subtitled "A Real American Hero" and is deeply familiar to individuals who are now pushing 50. It was a massive cross-media enterprise launched by Hasbro as a means of taking over a large portion of the toy market. "A Real American Hero" also involved a newly-relaunched toyline, which boasted a new menagerie of cartoonish characters figures that only...

Phil Coulson Returned to Marvel Continuity in 2024, Replacing a Major Marvel God
Image
2024 was the biggest year for Marvel's Phil Coulson since his death in 2012's The Avengers. That's not just because he was resurrection from death, but because he gained immense cosmic power, literally replacing a god in Marvel canon. Nobody guessed that 2024 would transform Phil Coulson, let alone make him the godlike leader of Marvel's most powerful team.

2024 saw a major upheaval in the lore surrounding the Infinity Stones, as Thanos revealed he had created a new 'Death Stone.' However, things really changed when the Stone escaped its creator, resurrecting and empowering former Shield agent Phil Coulson. Not only did this give Coulson major new powers, but it forced him to replace Death, becoming Marvel's new Grim Reaper.

The Death Stone was created when Thanos bound the entity known as Death (and often manifesting as his cosmic love 'Lady Death') to an artificial Infinity Stone. Now that the...

Move Over, Cobra Command. GI Joe's Recent Comeback Just Earned the Series a Top Honor
Image
The Energon Universe has been a massive success, and the recent G.I. Joe relaunch continues that trend by being the best-selling single issue released by Image Comics for the month of November. Skybound’s shared Transformers / G.I. Joe universe took the comic industry by storm with the release of 2023's Void Rivals #1 by Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici, and the imprint shows no signs of stopping as it continues into its second year.

According to Image Comics, the publisher’s top-selling book for the month of November was G.I. Joe #1 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire, and Rus Wooton, the relaunch of the forty-year-old property.

G.I. Joe #1 was easily one of the biggest launches of the year, but Skybound’s entire line of Energon Universe titles takes the top three spots for Image’s entire catalog for the month of November, as the #2 and #3 spots...

Wolverine Wednesday #81 – 50th Birthday Celebration Part 4
Image
50: Wolverine (v1) #87 W: Larry Hama P: Adam Kubert I: Dan Green C:Marie Javins

This issue was never not going to make the list. I choose it because it centres around Maverick but of course, it is a Wolverine story first and foremost. When I got into collecting Wolverine comics one of the things I wanted to learn about first was the history of Team X. In that regard this issue delivers as it alternates between the past and present. In te present Maverick has contracted the Legacy Virus and is attempting to trick Wolverine into killing him. The flashbacks reveal how Maverick would go to any lengths to complete a mission after Sabretooth has sabotaged their exit route. There are elements in this story that are touched upon in novels and cartoons that I had read before this issue, so to see it in comics was very cool.

Marvel Officially Introduces Eighth Infinity Stone, But This One Breaks All the Rules
Image
Marvel recently introduced its new seventh Infinity Stone, with Phil Coulson taking possession of the Death Stone - which only makes it all the more surprising that there is now an eighth Infinity Stone in Marvel's reality. However, rather than embodying a new fundamental force of the universe, this Stone is an aberration that just rewrote the rules of Marvel's most powerful artifacts, even removing their biggest weakness.

In the pages of Derek Landy, Ruairí Coleman, Scott Hannah, Brian Reber, Erick Arciniega and Cory Petit's Infinity Watch #1, Phil Couls meets Avery Zavala. Currently, Coulson is trying to shape the current Infinity Stone bearers into a team, leading them into battle against new villains the Apeiron. However, the team are quickly overpowered, and are only saved from death when Zavala steps in to help.

Avery Zavala reveals that he's a previously unknown Infinity Stone bearer, wielding his own Infinity Stone outside of the natural seven.

Transformers Fans Can Thank Two Marvel Legends For The Robots In Disguise
Image
"Transformers" does not have a singular creator — that's what happens when a story begins for commercial reasons, not artistic ones. During the 1980s, toy giant Hasbro imported several Japanese action figures of transforming robots. The Reagan administration had also loosened regulations on advertising in children's entertainment, so now Hasbro just needed a story to sell these "Transformers."

That call was answered by Marvel Comics, who Hasbro had already partnered with Marvel to develop their "G.I. Joe" series. In 1981, writer Larry Hama was pitching a new Nick Fury series. Then in came Hasbro, who wanted creative input for their planned action figure line "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero." Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter first suggested the idea of G.I. Joe as a anti-terrorism team, and proposed that Hama fold his ideas for Nick Fury into "G.I. Joe." Cue an ongoing "Joe" comic written by Hama, published by Marvel hitting stands in 1982.

Amusingly,...

Transformers & GI Joe Stories the Crossover Movie Should Use
Image
Since 2007, the Transformers franchise has been a major success at the box office, even if most of the movies weren't exactly successful with critics. On the other hand, fellow Hasbro franchise G.I. Joe largely failed to make a similar cinematic mark, be it critically or financially. Now, the two properties are set to join forces on the big screen, and there's plenty of comic book source material to pull from to make it work.

The G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises have crossed over in the comic book medium. Likewise, they have individual stories that could also be used to influence the movie team-up. By using these elements as a base, the Transformers/G.I. Joe movie might be a success.

Updated by Timothy Blake Donohoo on December 1, 2024: Per Hasbro and Paramount, a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie is still in the works. There have been several crossovers between the...

"I Can Sure as Hell Be Killed": The 10 Official Ways to Kill Wolverine According to the Man Himself
Image
When it comes to Marvel's unkillable heroes, Wolverine is at the top of the list, thanks mainly to his powerful healing factor. Logan can take on blades, bullets and laser blasts, healing in seconds to come back fighting with his deadly adamantium-coated claws. However, even Logan would admit that his healing factor isn't magic, and there are 10 definitive ways to kill him that Logan himself identifies as beyond his ability to recover from.

The majority of these methods are outlined in 2008's Wolverine: Killing Made Simple from Christopher Yost, Koi Turnbull, Sal Regla, Beth Sotelo and Cory Petit. The issue smartly consolidated past Wolverine lore, acknowledging past stories where he faced lethal threats. Other stories have added to this list since, with Wolverine acknowledging there are plenty of ways to end him if you're truly committed.

Spider-Man Officially Confirms a Founding Secret Six Hero Is Basically Immortal (& Destined to Become a God)
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man #60!

It's not uncommon that Marvel characters evolve far enough to become practical gods, and it seems like Spider-Man is getting to witness this transformation firsthand - with someone from his own rogue gallery. Sandman is a character who's had some heroic ups and villainous downs, as a founding member of the Secret Six while also serving at one time as one of the Sinister Six too. But hero or villain or even anti-hero, it turns out he's more powerful than supposed. In fact, he's already well on his way on the road to godhood.

In The Amazing Spider-Man #60, by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr., Spider-Man has to take a quick detour to take care of his old bank-robbing friend Flint Marko, or Sandman. It's a quick battle because, by now, Peter Parker knows how to handle this rogue - but it's...

I Don't Understand Why G.I. Joe's New Continuity Is Wasting Snake Eyes
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Scarlett #5While Image and Skybound's new Energon Universe has been fascinating and engaging, I'm still waiting for Snake Eyes. Bringing the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises together alongside brand-new characters and all-new storylines, I have loved how the often separate lores and continuities have been merged in fresh and creative new ways. That said, I'm baffled by the absence of Snake Eyes who's indisputably one of the most popular Joes of all time.

Having first begun with Robert Kirkman and Lorenzo De Felici's Void Rivals in June 2023, the Energon Universe also features Skybound's Transformers by Daniel Warren Johnson and multiple G.I. Joe miniseries including Duke, Cobra Commander, Destro, and Scarlett. Additionally, G.I. Joe #1 will begin in November for Joshua Williamson and Tom Reilly. That said, I don't understand why there have been zero mentions of Snake Eyes, a character who is just as iconic as Duke,...

Who Is Patch? Hugh Jackman's New Wolverine Variant In Deadpool & Wolverine Explained
Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Thomas Haden Church, Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya, and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
One of the biggest draws for the multiverse is the ability to bring in characters that typically would not be possible from a narrative standpoint, and Deadpool & Wolverine pulled off bringing in a significant number of multiverse characters brilliantly. The MCU struck gold with the film, as Deadpool & Wolverine made over a billion dollars at the box office, and is the highest grossing film for Marvel since Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's clear that, when properly utilized, the multiverse can be incredibly successful.

Deadpool & Wolverine was overloaded with cameos and Easter eggs, featuring various characters throughout Marvel's film history. Familiar faces to the Deadpool and Fox X-Men franchise, as Deadpool & Wolverine's cast saw the return of Colossus, Shatterstar, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and even Aaron Stanford's Pyro, but Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine was the highlight of the film. Marvel Planned to Cancel Wolverine Until G.I. Joe Writer Took Over (& Made Him Huge Again)

Wolverine is one of Marvels top characters, but according to iconic G.I. Joe writer Larry Hama, sales on his solo book were once so low that it was in danger of being canceled. The Joe scribe was then given the task of taking over the title, turning sales around until it was one of Marvels top-selling titles.

Appearing at the Wolverine: 50-Year Anniversary panel at Dragon Con 2024, Larry Hama explained how he got the job writing Wolverine. I was having trouble getting writing work at Marvel at the time, Hama said, I had the number one book in G.I. Joebut they said. G.I. Joes a fluke.

Amazingly, Marvel's brass at the time might have been wrong about Hama's G.I. Joe, but they were right to give him the opportunity to write Wolverine, which not only solidified the author's reputation as a comics maestro, but it salvaged the X-franchise's...

Wolverine Lore Changes Forever with Introduction of Gold Adamantium
Image
Marvel just introduced a devastating new force to Wolverine lore, as new gold adamantium arrives to upgrade Logan's enemies and attempt to seize control of his mind. Adamantium is an unbreakable metal in Marvel lore - one which was bonded to Wolverine's bones and claws by the villainous Weapon X and their experiments on mutants. Now, the metal that has become part of Wolverine's body is once again making him a target.

In Wolverine #1 by Saladin Ahmed and Martn Cccolo, Wolverine battles his old enemy Cyber in the wilds of Canada. Logan brutalizes Cyber, whose arms are coated in adamantium, and the clashes of their battle awaken a mysterious golden metal deep underground. An injured Cyber later encounters this golden metal while fleeing from Wolverine and is possessed by it, with his adamantium being 'infected' and taking on a golden sheen.

Wolverine's Bone Claws Caused a Huge Argument Among Marvel Creators

Wolverines bone claws caused a storm of controversy among fans when he lost his Adamantium in the nineties, but according to writer Larry Hama, it was nothing compared to what happened behind the scenes at Marvel. Immediately controversial among fans, Wolverine went without his Adamantium skeleton for the next six years.

The Best Deadpool And Wolverine Comics, Ranked
Image
Three weeks after landing in theaters, "Deadpool & Wolverine" is still going strong. It has not only crossed the $1 billion box office milestone at the box office, but also and bocame the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" has a lot of problems (read /Film's mixed review here) but the titular buddy dynamic is one of its strengths. If nothing else, it's fun to hear a grouchy Hugh Jackman call Ryan Reynolds an idiot over and over.

Logan and Wade Wilson have a long history in Marvel Comics. They're both way more lethal than most other superheroes and have a shared history of being experimented on by the Weapon X super soldier program. Wolverine's bad temper makes him the perfect comedic foil for Deadpool's flippancy, so their team-ups are a salt-and-pepper pairing that makes for a truly dynamic duo.

Looking across the three decades of Deadpool and Wolverine's shared comic history,...

Marvel Redefines James McAvoy's Iconic X-men: First Class Speech, with Dark Reveal About Sentinels

Charles Xavier's innocent pick-up line in the X-Men films takes a dark turn in Marvel Comics. Sentinels target mutants with unique traits like heterochromia, as the Sentinels see this as a mutatation, and therefore most destroy it. Wolverine #50 reveals the dark side of Sentinels' capabilities, and expands on mutant discrimination themes.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Wolverine #50! James McAvoy famously played Charles Xavier in the prequel X-Men films, debuting in 2011s X-Men: First Class. In that movie, Xavier gave a speech about mutant evolution, portions of which he converted into talking points when chatting-up people at the local bars, which included one particular point that was just brought into Marvel Comics. Harry Shearer Wasn't The First Voice Of Mr. Burns On The Simpsons
Image
Many of the recurring faces on "The Simpsons" have the same voice: Harry Shearer. Alongside Hank Azaria, Shearer does more than double duty in playing the series' supporting cast. As a testament to his range, his roles run the gamut from nice guy Ned Flanders to milquetoast Principal Skinner (don't say Armin Tamzarian) to evil Mr. Charles Montgomery Burns, owner of the Springfield Nuclear Plant and Homer Simpson's boss.

Shearer is the definitive voice of Mr. Burns (he's been doing it for 30+ seasons), but he wasn't the first actor to voice the character. That would be the late Christopher Collins, who was briefly part of the "Simpsons" cast during its first season, which aired from 1989 to 1990. The X-Men Stories That X-Men ’97 Season 2 Will Likely Adapt
Image
This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.

X-Men ’97 ended with more than a few spinning plates. Sure, Bastion was defeated, but the events sent some of the X-Men to the far future and others into the past. And yet a few others were zapped to parts unknown, such as Wolverine, who remains in critical condition after Magneto ripped out his adamantium skeleton. Back in the present, Forge and Bishop make plans to find their friends. Then there’s the matter of Professor X and Magneto’s mental states, which seems to be pointing toward the coming of the terrible Onslaught.

As that last point reminds us, as wonderful as X-Men ’97 is, a lot of its power comes from the Marvel comics that it adapts. The first season of X-Men ’97 ran quickly through some important storylines from the comics, including Inferno, Mutant Massacre, Lifedeath, and Operation: Zero Tolerance.

X-Men '97 Just Did Something Truly Awful To Wolverine – What Comes Next May Lie In The Comics
Image
Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.

The goriest moment of "X-Men '97" season 1 will assuredly go down as episode 5, "Remember It," which saw the mutant nation of Genosha wiped out just as it was in the dark "X-Men" comic arc "E is for Extinction."

Episode 9, "Tolerance is Extinction Part 2" just gave it a runner-up though. Magneto, who has returned to his old villain ways, is fighting the X-Men on his new base of Asteroid M. Wolverine, famous for his adamantium-coated claws and skeleton, stabs Magneto. Undeterred, Magneto uses his powers to tear out the adamantium from Wolverine's body.

This bit, like most of the episode, is taken from 1993 "X-Men" comic crossover event "Fatal Attractions." The episode ends with a shot recreating a panel from "X-Men" #25 (drawn by Andy Kubert) of liquified adamantium heeding Magneto's call and pouring out of Wolverine's battered body. Writer Peter David first suggested this as a joke,...

X-Men ’97’s Wolverine Twist Sets Up a Controversial New Version of the Character
Image
This article contains spoilers for X-Men ’97 episode 9.

Wolverine has always been a mystery, ever since he stalked the Hulk through the Canadian wilderness in his 1974 first appearance. Over the years, readers got occasional glimpses into his past, from his real name(s) to his shady black ops missions.

One of the most shocking reveals came in the aftermath to 1993’s X-Men #25, the climax of the crossover event Fatal Attractions, when an incensed Magneto ripped out Wolverine’s Adamantium skeleton.

X-Men ’97 has already run through some of the most important events in X-Men history, covering Inferno, Mutant Massacre, and E is for Extinction in the span of nine 22-minute episodes. But the series set up something much bigger when it pulled from Fatal Attractions in the penultimate episode of the first season, “Tolerance is Extinction Part Two.” By that episodes end, a desperate Magneto stops Wolverine the only way he knows how,...

X-Men's Monstrous Wild Sentinel Gets God-Tier Upgrade With New Iron Man Tech
Image
The Stark Sentinels pose a new threat to the X-Men as they receive new upgrades that make them resemble the Wild Sentinels that decimated Genosha. While his fellow X-Men battle the new and improved Stark Sentinels, Wolverine faces off against Graydon Creed in an epic battle while wearing adamantium armor. The history of the X-Men is filled with massacres and attacks, with the Genosha massacre being the most infamous.

The Sentinel attack on Genosha is one of the most infamous events in X-Men history, and now the Wild Sentinels responsible have gotten a terrifying upgrade thanks to Iron Man's technology. Tony Stark's company and tech were recently acquired by the anti-mutant industrialist Feilong, who combined the mutant-hunting Sentinels with Iron Man armor to create the formidable Stark Sentinels. Now the X-Men are going to have to face a new evolution of these death machines, and they may not survive the experience.

Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer Teases The Return Of More Forgotten Marvel Mutants
Image
The latest trailer for "Deadpool & Wolverine" suggests the movie might be even more of a cameo-fest than we'd previously predicted.

Hugh Jackman is back as Logan, of course, and he's bringing leftover characters from the erstwhile 20th Century Fox's Marvel Universe. We already knew Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Pyro (Aaron Stanford), and Toad would be back. So will Wolverine's archenemy Sabretooth, perhaps finally giving Logan a chance at closure.

Around the 1:50 minute mark of the new trailer, you were probably focused on the decapitated head of a Giant Man variant (his rotting skull concealed within his ant-styled helmet). I'm much more curious about the characters standing beneath this makeshift base, who look to be familiar (mutant) faces from previous "X-Men" films: Yuriko Oyama/Lady Deathstrike from "X2" and Azazel from "X-Men: First Class."

Both are seen at too far a distance to determine if their previous actors...

X-Men ’97 Just Brought Back One of the Weirdest Villains in Marvel History
Image
This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.

It takes five minutes for “Motendo” segment of the latest episode of X-Men ’97 to reveal its big bad. A stomach-churning yellow creature covered in metal appears on screen and yells, “I am Mojo, your primetime psycho inter dimensional TV producer who feeds off ratings!”

That’s actually a pretty good description for Mojo, one of the strangest Marvel villains of all time. The “Motendo” segment finds Mojo kidnapping Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (not yet taking his Sunspot moniker) and sending them into a video game. There, they battle various computerized baddies and garner praise from an audience, which in turn makes Mojo more powerful.

Unsurprisingly, the segment includes plenty of nods to the history of X-Men video games. And if you’re the type of person who got upset that the episode used a Snes portmanteau to describe a system that looked...

Unmade G.I. Joe Cartoon Concept Art Surfaces
Image
Concept art for an unmade G.I. Joe cartoon has finally been released, showcasing an unseen look at the Real American Hero.

Said concept art was revealed through Night Shining, Inc., with the series being pitched during the 2010s. Titled G.I. Joe: Adventure Team, the series was going to combine the adventure and rescue scope of the 1970s G.I. Joe toyline while acting as a sort of prelude to the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon of the 1980s. Eschewing terrorists and similar threats entirely, the focus was instead going to be on adventuring around the world to protect natural wonders. To this end, the Adventure Team was going to be comprised of various adventurers with certain skill sets and specialties. For instance, Rocky was the "Land Adventurer" who was trained in geology and tracking.

The Energon Universe is here, and the new shared continuity is set to reboot G.I. Joe later this year. New beginnings can also mean the chance for redemption, so perhaps now is the perfect time for none other than Stephen King’s infamous contribution to the franchise to get a new lease on life…

Many fans may not realize it, but the G.I. Joe villain Crystal Ball was created by none other than legendary horror author Stephen King. King’s youngest son Owen was a fan of the franchise, and the celebrated author reached out to Hasbro with an idea for a new character.

King was so enthusiastic that he even wrote Crystal Ball's file card, the famous bios that appeared on the figure card-backs and were mostly written by G.I. Joe godfather Larry Hama.
