Stuart Hall was a Jamaican-born British Marxist sociologist, cultural theorist, and political activist. He is considered one of the key figures in the development of cultural studies and was hugely influential in academia and politics.
In 1951, Hall moved to Britain to study at the University of Oxford, and in 1964, he co-founded the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham University. Hall's work explored issues of race, class, identity, and media, and he is particularly known for his theories of encoding and decoding, which analyze how media messages are produced and interpreted.
Hall was a prominent public intellectual, frequently appearing in television and radio debates. He also contributed to journals such as *New Left Review* and *Marxism Today*. He held professorships at the Open University and Goldsmiths College, and continued to write and lecture until late in his life.
