    He enlisted as an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps on 10 December 1941, three days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which drew the United States into World War II. He was killed in action on February 20, 1943, in Tunisia, North Africa. At the time of his death, he was a first lieutenant in the 12th Air Force, 93rd Fighter Squadron.
