The director Adolf Gärtner began his career as an actor at the theater and there he could also made first experiences as a director of several plays.

From 1915 he continued to realise many movies which became very popular. Among them some movies with the favored figure Stuart Webbs, impersonated by Ernst Reicher.

He was engaged by Oskar Messter in 1910 where he remained till 1913 and therefore Adolf Gärnter became a pioneer of the German film history.

With Eva May he created his own movie star.

He directed numerous short movies in the next years and in many of his movies acted later movie stars like Henny Porten, Friedrich Zelnik or Erich Kaiser-Titz.
