Twice won Broadway's Tony Award as Best Director (Play): in 1995 for a revival of "The Heiress" and then, in the next year, 1996, for a revival of Edward Albee's"A Delicate Balance." He had also been nominated in the same category in 1994 for a revival of Robert E. Sherwood's "Abe Lincoln in Illinois."

He was nominated for a 1978 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Play for "You Can't Take It With You" at the St. Nicholas Theater Company in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for a 1979 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Musical for "The Curse of the Aching Heart" at the St. Nicholas Theater Company in Chicago, Illinois.

He was nominated for 1980 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Play for "The Primary English Class" at the St. Nicholas Theater Company in Chicago, Illinois.
