Film review: 'Parallel Sons'
Set in a backwoodsy Adirondack town not far from the Canadian border, independent John G. Young's debut feature "Parallel Sons" is so sincere and lyrically romantic that one keeps hoping for more compelling drama than it actually delivers.

Opening today at the Nuart for a one-week engagement, the Greycat Films release bowed at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival and has gone on to win awards at other fests. Business will be limited primarily to gay audiences, who may be drawn by the white-guy-meets-black-man love story.

Seth (Gabriel Mick, "I Shot Andy Warhol") sports dreadlocks and the most extensive rap music collection in his dreary hometown. He's a sensitive, downright angelic 20-year-old, gentle and multicultural, with dreams of attending art school in the Big City.

His no-nonsense, gunshop-owning father Graham Alex Johnson) is not happy with Seth's embracing modern black culture and neither is a snippy contemporary (Josh Hopkins), who hangs out at the diner where the lead works. Seth's boss (Maureen Shannon) is his biggest fan, but his lusty girlfriend (Heather Gottlieb) does not handle it well when she's rudely rebuffed for wanting to have sex with him.

The emotionally wounded girl is the daughter of mean Sheriff Mott (Murphy Guyer), who likes to bug the lead about his attire and attitude.

The real story kicks in when Seth confronts a robber in the diner late one night. Enter the bleeding Knowledge (Laurence Mason, "The Crow"), a virile black man in trouble -- and just what Seth has always dreamed of.

With a convenient cabin in the woods, away from his father's house, Seth nurses the initially abrasive Knowledge back to health. They soon reveal all their secrets, while falling in love and avoiding detection by the fink neighbors. Not surprisingly -- but effectively ending the film's chances at success -- Seth and Knowledge are forced to flee for their lives when one of them accidentally-on-purpose shoots the sheriff.

While the performances are palatable, with Mason and Julia Weldon as Seth's younger sister making the strongest impressions, writer-director Young can't resist pouring on the tragic developments, and one is summarily bummed at the outcome. Some will be moved, but the film plays with a loaded deck of cliches that undermine its noble intentions.
