Hear a Lost Recording of an Unknown Gary Clark Jr. Ripping Through ‘Catfish Blues’ in 2004
Image
Long before Gary Clark Jr. jammed with Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, and Foo Fighters, and headlined festivals all across the globe, he was an unknown, unsigned blues guitarist in his hometown of Austin, Texas, desperate to make a name for himself. On Sept. 24, 2004, when he was just 20, Clark found himself onstage at Antone’s Nightclub playing the blues standard “Catfish Blues” on a bill that also included Double Trouble, James Cotton, and Jimmie Vaughan.

A tape of his blazing performance from that night has been tucked away for the past 21 years,...

‘Sinners’ Slices Jason Statham’s $99 Million Action Thriller During Its First Day on Streaming
Image
Sinners finally made its long-awaited streaming debut to start this week, and the film wasted no time dethroning an action legend. Sinners arrived on VOD platforms such as Prime Video on Tuesday, and after only one day on the streamer, it successfully claimed the #1 spot. Sinners took this spot from A Working Man, the latest action vehicle from Jason Statham, that wrapped up its theatrical run a few weeks ago after falling just short of $100 million at the box office. Sinners was produced on a reported budget of around $90 million, and the film has already staked out $351 million at the global box office. If it can collect $9 million more before the end of its run, which will likely be no problem, it will leave theaters after grossing more than four times its budget.

Sinners is the latest creation from acclaimed director Ryan Coogler, and it marks his fifth directorial feature.

Sinners Remains Box Office King With Impressively Small Drop for Second Weekend in Theaters
Image
Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, is off to a strong start for its second weekend in theaters and is on track to top the box office again.

Per Variety, Sinners' second week in theaters kept up the momentum of its premiere, gaining $13 million on Friday, only an 8% drop from last week's daily total. This success puts the Ryan Coolger-directed film above other new releases, including The Accountant 2 and the film adaptation of the video game Until Dawn. Sinners success exceeded expectations, including Warner Bros. Sinners brought in $45.6 million at the box office, exceeding the predicted $40 million.

Sinners follows a pair of twins, Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore, both played by Jordon. The Brothers are World War I veterans whose jukejoint eventually draws the attention of a group of vampires. The film's budget was in the range of $90 to $100 million, and so far, it has garnered exceedingly positive reviews...

Legendary Bluesman Buddy Guy on His Buzzy Movie Role in ‘Sinners’: ‘It’s a Dream Come True, to Be Honest… I Did It to Help the Blues’ (Exclusive)
Image
Damn right, he’s got the blues… and the scars to show for it. A surprise extended cameo at the end of “Sinners” [spoiler alert!] reveals that Sammie, who is played as a youth in the 1930s by Miles Caton, survived the film’s long night of terror, thanks in part to how a resonator guitar can be used as a weapon. And he has lived on in the form of someone who looks and plays very much like Buddy Guy. It is Buddy Guy, of course, still around and still arguably — no, inarguably — the most legendary blues guitarist walking the planet.

Variety caught up with Guy, 88, on the phone from his native Chicago, where he still plays at his club, much like the aged Sammie in “Sinners” still plays at his. Guy says, “If I could get quite a few more people speaking like you, I might consider myself as a movie actor.

'This Whole Movie Was About That': Sinners Director Breaks Down That Post-Credits Scene's Deeper Meaning
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for Sinners, now showing in theaters.

Audiences didn't have to wait too long to find out Sinners had a post-credits sequence. Director Ryan Coogler confirmed that epilogue was first on his priority list: it was his personal tribute to someone important.

Director Ryan Coogler said his late Uncle James was one of the reasons Sinners was made. It was also crucial that they cast blues legend Buddy Guy as the older Sammie in the epilogue. "I wrote what I thought [my uncle] think would be cool," he told Entertainment Weekly. "[Buddy Guy is] the only artist that my uncle would consistently get dressed for and go see a lot." Coogler's uncle grew up in Mississippi, the birthplace of Delta blues; Buddy Guy's style is rooted in the genre. A renowned Chicago bluesman, his musicality inspired Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray, and many other guitar legends.

In the movie's climactic finale,...

Sinners on Track to Beat Warner Bros.' 3-Day Opening Projections at the Box Office
Image
Director Ryan Coogler's Sinnersis set to outpace Warner Bros.' own box office projections during its opening weekend.

Per Variety, Sinners brought in more than $19.2 million at the box office from Friday and preview screenings alone across 3,308 theaters. This is more than enough to beat the box office projections generated by Warner Bros., which had pinned the film at bringing in around $40 million across a three day opening weekend. Part of this return comes from premium ticket prices charged to Imax viewers, which the film's marketing campaign heavily featuring ads for the 70mm format.

Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in the dual roles of twin brothers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore, a pair of World War I veterans who use stolen gang money to open a juke joint. When their venue becomes a local hot spot, it unwittingly attracts the attention of a small band of vampires who...

Sinners Final Act and Musical Sequence Push Story Across Generations
Ryan Coogler
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners delivers a narrative set in 1932 Mississippi, where twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return home to open a juke joint. What begins as a celebration becomes a night of violence after a vampire named Remmick targets the gathering.

Remmick turns many partygoers, including Stack and Mary, into vampires. Survivors Smoke, Sammie (Miles Caton), Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), Delta Slim, Pearline, and Grace arm themselves with stakes, garlic, and improvised weapons. The final confrontation leaves only Smoke and Sammie standing against Remmick’s remaining followers. They’re saved by the sunrise and Sammie’s use of his guitar.

Smoke stays behind to prepare for an attack from Hogwood and a group of Klansmen. He eliminates them using a hidden stash of weapons, but suffers a gunshot wound in the process. He envisions Annie and their child, holding them in a brief moment of peace.

‘Sinners’ Ending Explained: Smoke and Stack’s Fates After the Vampire Brawl and That Post-Credits Cameo
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot details, including the ending, of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” now playing in theaters.

Who survived their dance with the devil in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners”?

The Premise

The period thriller takes place over one hog-wild, then harrowing day and night in October 1932, as the Smokestack twins — Smoke and Stack, played by Michael B. Jordan — return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta to open a juke joint.

The first half of Coogler’s 2 hour and 17-minute sultry and scary opus is largely dedicated to Smoke and Stack’s preparations for the party, beginning with securing a venue. The twins, who’ve made some cash working in Chicago for Al Capone, buy an old sawmill from a condescending white man named Hogwood (David Maldonado), who promises the KKK is no longer around these parts, so they won’t be bothered.

Then, they recruit their cousin...

‘Sinners’ Post-Credits Scenes Explained: There’s Much More
Image
“Sinners” is a lot of movie.

It’s a period crime movie, of sorts, following the exploits of twins (played by Michael B. Jordan), who return from bootlegging with Al Capone to their small Mississippi town, determined to create something of their own. It’s also, chiefly, a horror movie, about a group of vampires who are looking for trouble. And, thanks to the thoughtfulness of writer/director Ryan Coogler, it’s a movie about community and how the safe spaces we create are still vulnerable to outside forces – supernatural and otherwise.

In fact, “Sinners” is so much of a movie that it spills past the credits, with a pair of scenes after the movie is over.

These sequences are fascinating expansions of the main narrative and are very much worth discussing. But before we do, we have to issue a very stern spoiler warning. If you haven’t seen the movie,...

Ryan Coogler's New Michael B. Jordan-Led Vampire Film Has Hypnotized the Critics and Audiences on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Early debut scores on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics don't always reflect the final score, as the ratings might fluctuate as more reviews come in. Luckily, even though it lost its perfect score, Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners, continues to impress.

Ryan Coogler has been behind many critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including the Black Panther and Creed film series. Now, he reunited with Michael B. Jordan for Sinners, giving the actor the opportunity of a dual role. Sinners is now officially in theaters, and it achieved a rare feat on Rotten Tomatoes, as both fans and critics are in agreement over its stunning score.

Sinners debuted with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes from the critics. Even though it lost the rare score, the horror mystery vampire movie holds a 97% rating from both camps — critics and the audience. On top of that, the movie has also received the two coveted badges,...

Sinners Post-Credits Scenes Explained
Image
Spoilers for "Sinners" follow.

If you know what's good for you, you'll have savored every last drop of Ryan Coogler's latest and unquestionably greatest work to date with "Sinners," the horror movie that might be the director's biggest box-office gamble to date. Sat somewhere between "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "No Country for Old Men" (which Coogler confirmed he drew from), the Michael B. Jordan spine-chiller culminates in a glorious blend of music, monsters and lost souls arriving right where they need to be, and the best part is that it isn't even the end.

Nowadays, movies with post-credit scenes are often adorned with a Marvel logo, so it's a refreshing change of pace to see one at the end of Coogler's latest. Here, the "Black Panther" director sticks not one but two buttons on the end of "Sinners," both of which hold immense value in the violent and...

Bonnie Raitt on What She Thinks of That Charli Xcx Sample

One of the year’s least expected samples on a record started with an email. A few months ago, Bonnie Raitt received a note from Bon Iver auteur Justin Vernon. Raitt was already familiar with Vernon, especially after he covered her 1991 standard “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” with a bit of “Nick of Time” tacked on, a dozen years back. This time, Vernon was circling back to the latter song, but in a very different way.

As Raitt recalls, “Justin said, ‘I’m working with this artist you may or may not know,...

Nick Gravenites Dies: Chicago Bluesman Who Cofounded The Electric Flag, Wrote Songs For Janis Joplin And Produced 1971 Hit “One Toke Over The Line” Was 85
Image
Nick Gravenites, a Chicago blues musician who relocated to San Francisco in the 1960s and played an important role in that city’s burgeoning rock scene, died Wednesday, September 18, after many months of failing health. He was 86.

His death was announced by family on his Facebook page. Details about cause or place of death were not disclosed, with the post noting that details will follow as they arrive. “The Gravenites family appreciates all of the fans and loved ones who have been there for us during this time,” the Facebook note states.

A GoFundMe page to defray medical costs for Gravenites was set up last April, in part by longtime friend and colleague Barry Melton of Country Joe and the Fish.

Gravenites was born on October 2, 1938, in Chicago, and by the mid-1950s immersed himself in the city’s blues scene, forming, as his website bio puts it, a “coterie...

‘Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision’ Review: Straightforward Doc Illuminates a Momentous Offstage Chapter of Rock History
Image
Over the 54 years since it opened, Electric Lady Studios in New York has hosted recording sessions for a who’s who of music acts. Its earliest clients included Led Zeppelin, Carly Simon and Stevie Wonder — none of whom are in the documentary about the facility that’s now hitting theaters. That absence is noticeable at first but ultimately not a problem; one of the strengths of John McDermott’s film is that it breaks the rock-doc mold by not relying on a starry roster of talking heads.

Focused on the conception and creation of the studio — the first such commercial enterprise owned by a recording artist — Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision explores the stop-start year spent designing and building it, with Hendrix and his creative partners navigating cash-flow interruptions and the intrusions of subterranean tributaries. The doc might have been a degree or two tighter, but compared with...

‘The Blues Under the Skin’ Trailer: Restored Blues Doc Featuring B.B. King and Buddy Guy Finally Hits Theaters After 50 Years
Image
Even the most casual students of American music will be quick to tell you that it’s almost impossible to find a musical tradition that can’t be traced back to the blues.

From the lyrical repetition and call-and-response structure of countless pop songs to the 12-bar guitar lines that formed the foundation of jazz and rock ‘n roll (which in turn created many of the samples that fueled the genesis of hip-hop), America’s first art form produced many of the creative traditions and stylistic flourishes that we now take for granted.

As the blues artists of the early 20th-century continue to influence a new generation of musicians in both direct and indirect ways, a forgotten documentary featuring many of the genre’s most influential voices is returning to theaters this summer. Roviros Manthoulis’ 1973 film “The Blues Under the Skin” saw the music documentarian traveling through the deep south...

Michael Cuscuna, the three-time Grammy winner, Mosaic Records co-founder, historian and archivist who produced hundreds of jazz reissues and studio sessions during his career, has died. He was 75.

Cuscuna died Saturday of cancer at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, Grammy-winning recording artist Billy Vera, a longtime friend, announced.

Stony Island Clip Revisits Classic R&b Movie for Its Funky 45th Anniversary Re-Release
Image
Stony Island is a classic film directed by Andrew Davis that tells the story of two musicians who start a band in Chicago's South Side against all odds. The film celebrates the music scene in Chicago and pays tribute to the city's rich musical history, mentioning artists like Benny Goodman, Buddy Guy, and Chaka Khan. Stony Island received positive reviews from critics and was praised for capturing the spirit of the city with a refreshing cynicism, according to Roger Ebert.

We have an exclusive clip from the 45th anniversary re-release of classic film that rarely gets the attention it deserves these days — Stony Island. Before he directed The Fugitive, Holes, Under Siege, A Perfect Murder, Collateral Damage, and other blockbuster films, Andrew Davis helmed the funky classic Stony Island, an era-defining film about two people who start a band against all the odds. The film stars Richard Davis, Gene Barge,...

Elsewhere, Clapton performed lengthy sets on both nights, dipping into Beck’s songbook for originals like “Beck’s Bolero,...
