The Sandlot, the sports comedy classic that reminded everyone not to mess with highly valued baseball items, has become a streaming hit. The iconic 1993 film has climbed up the charts of the free streaming service Tubi, and by the time of writing, it sits on the second spot in the top 10 list of the platform's most popular movies.
Directed by David Mickey Evans, The Sandlot follows a group of young baseball fans in the summer of 1962 in the San Fernando Valley. Scott Smalls is the new kid in town, and although his stepfather likes baseball, Scott hasn't exactly acquired the ability to play ball. The boy finds a sandlot where some kids meet daily to play baseball, but on the first attempt to make friends, things don't go great. However, with the guidance of the team leader, Benny Rodriguez, Smalls becomes part of the gang.
Summer is going great until they run out of balls.

Chicago – 1993 will be nostalgically remembered by many members of my generation as the summer of “Jurassic Park” and the spring of “The Sandlot.” If you were a movie-loving kid during this year, it’s highly likely both of these films occupied a corner of your imagination. I clearly remember how the junkyard dog, dubbed by neighborhood pals in “The Sandlot” as “the Beast,” seemed as terrifying as any T-Rex.
Since I was seven years old in 1993, my parents wouldn’t allow me to be traumatized by Spielberg’s monster movie (I later saw it on VHS during a snow day, and was absolutely spellbound). But I did see “The Sandlot,” and prided myself on being able to handle the gleefully scary scenes where a group of boys attempts to snatch a prized baseball from the jaws of the Beast. Viewed 20 years later, I now see why it was so effortless...

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has released the 20th Anniversary edition of “The Sandlot,” directed by David. M. Evans, written by Evans and Robert Gunter and starring Tom Guiry, Patrick Renna, Denis Leary and James Earl Jones. In case you’ve missed out on “The Sandlot,” here’s a quick primer: “It’s early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls has just moved into town with his folks. Kids call him a dork – he can’t even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It’s the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fun!” [ Read More ]
