But that's exactly what James Gunn is trying to do. After all, neither David Corenswet nor Rachel Brosnahanhad been in a superhero movie until the upcoming Superman. That doesn't mean, of course, that there won't be exceptions to that rule, with people like Nicholas Hoult (who played Beast in several X-Men movies), his brother Sean Gunn (whom he casts in everything), or — if he has his way — his leading lady from Guardians of the Galaxy, Zoe Saldaña.

In a new interview with Screenrant's Ash Crossan, Saldaña was asked by the host about the teasing tidbit Gunn made in a comment on Threads (a.k.a. Instagram's Twitter clone) about having a specific role in mind for the actress.

Since it was confirmed that Superman would introduce many other DC heroes apart from the titular character, many fans have wondered if the Dcu already has its own version of the Justice League. Unlike the MCU, the Dcu is a universe that audiences are entering with metahumans and superpowered individuals having been part of the world for some time, as hinted at in Creature Commandos. An excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter revealed that Warner Bros. will devote a lot of promotion to Peacemaker at San Diego Comic-Con ahead of season 2's August release. "DC Studios is going all-in on Peacemaker, the hit John Cena The Suicide Squad spinoff created by DC co-chief James Gunn," the report noted. "Peacemaker will have a big footprint at the convention, a move that signals DC and Max’s confidence in Season 2, which bows Aug. 21. And, while DC had no comment, there could be a Hall H panel for the show."

By contrast, movies won't be as heavily promoted due to Superman's July release and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow being under a year away, suggesting, "DC Studios is biding its time before making any reveals."

Peacemaker Season 2's trailer revealed the first official look at an important Dcu character played by an MCU actor. James Gunn's DC reboot is already confirmed to include 14 Marvel actors, most of whom have worked with Gunn in his past MCU movies. Part of the list consists of Pom Klementieff, Nathan Fillion, Frank Grillo, Jennifer Holland, David Harbour, and James Gunn's brother, Sean Gunn. 

Sean Gunn already played dual roles in Creature Commandos, with him bringing Weasel and G.I. Robot to life in the Dcu-set animated series. Aside from his animated debut, Gunn is set to make an impact as an iconic DC villain in the Dcu as Maxwell Lord in Superman: Legacy. 

While Maxwell Lord has been kept out of marketing for Superman: Legacy, Peacemaker Season 2's trailer revealed Sean Gunn's Dcu villain, making it the first official look at the character.

The lengthy teaser for Peacemaker season two has DC fans geeking out over the appearances of Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) at the beginning of the trailer. The two and a half minute trailer also features new A.R.G.U.S. leader Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows), who proves he’s horrible at coming up with nicknames.

“The new season follows Christopher ‘Chris’ Smith, aka Peacemaker (John Cena), the vigilante superhero, as he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost,” reads Max’s official synopsis.

Season two will premiere on August 21, 2025 at 9pm Et/Pt, with new episodes of the eight-episode season arriving on Thursdays.

On Friday, Max debuted the first trailer for Season 2 of Peacemaker, the Emmy Award-nominated series from DC Studios boss and Superman filmmaker James Gunn. (The show was nominated for best stunts in 2022.)

Season 2 picks up with the titular Peacemaker aka Christopher “Chris” Smith (John Cena), as “he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost.”

DC Studios spoiled the fates of Superman's Justice Gang in the first trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, starring John Cena. Max has set Thursday, August 21 for the Season 2 premiere of James Gunn’s Peacemaker, from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television.

The streamer also released the first full trailer, which opens with John Cena’s Chris/Peacemaker being grilled by Justice League’s Green Lantern/Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders (Isabel Merced) and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn).

“Can you tell us a little about your skills,” asks Green Lantern, to which Peacemaker/Chris replies “I’m considered the finest marksman in the world,” “Microphone is off?” we hear Hawkgirl say. Cena’s Chris continues touting his skills, saying “I am also proficient in hand-to-hand combat.” But the three are not impressed. At one point we hear “This guy sucks”.

There have been hints that James Gunn's Superman will put its own spin on real-life events, with many comparing whatever's happening in the fictional nation of Boravia to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

It's hardly a surprise, as many of Superman's comics have balanced Truth, Justice, and the American Way with politics; heck, Lex Luthor even became President of the United States for a time.

A multitude of Superman plot leaks have been doing the rounds in recent weeks. The latest pertains to Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord, and comes after the Guardians of the Galaxy star confirmed he'll appear in the movie this July.

According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, "Max Lord (Sean Gunn) only appears in one scene in Superman. He's on [TV], saying 'The one thing both the left and right can agree on is that Lex Luthor sucks.'"

While the majority of Dceu actors aren't part of DC Studios' Dcu plans, The Suicide Squad star Sean Gunn has already landed multiple roles in the reboot being mapped out by his brother, James Gunn.

The Guardians of the Galaxy standout stole the show last year in Creature Commandos as G.I. Robot and reprised his previous role, Weasel, as well. While he's bound to lend his voice to both characters in live-action somewhere down the line, Gunn's main on-camera role will be as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

The character is expected to be less of a full-blown baddie and more of an antagonist in the Dcu, bringing the Wonder Woman 1984 character (where he was played by Pedro Pascal) more in line with his comic book counterpart.

James Gunn's Superman figures to be one of the biggest movies of the year and Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced and Engineer actress Maria Gabriela de Faria are reflecting on their experiences at different points of the filming process.

For De Faria who portrays one of DC Comics' most powerful characters, the Engineer, she reflected on the physical nature of her role. It sounds like she'll have some intense fight scenes, although we haven't seen much of the character in any of the previously released footage.

Speaking to Remezcla, de Faria stated, "This experience was super challenging physically, but it was also very challenging emotionally. My character as The Engineer is a very physical character."

Green Day have a new movie in the works, but Billie Joe Armstrong still has his eyes on another film project — an adaptation of the American Idiot musical — that was planned but never made.

Speaking to Variety ahead of the band’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony today, Armstrong was asked about the status of the American Idiot film, based on the one-time Broadway musical. Back in 2016, HBO revealed plans to adapt the musical with Armstrong in the role of St. Jimmy, but nearly a decade later, the film remains unmade.
