There is not a single person in the Hindi film industry whose face doesn’t light up at the mention of Yash Johar. There was much more to him than being Karan Johar’s son, although in his later years he introduced himself proudly as his son’s father.
Recalls Karan, “To my father there was no son better than me. He would launch into panegyrics about me in front of strangers and I would be so embarrassed. Whatever I am today, I owe it to my father. I am reaping the harvests of his goodwill in the film industry,”
Before he became an independent producer Yash Johar was a close associate of Dev Anand who had nothing but words of praise for Yash Johar.

Amitabh Bachchan, in this special interview speaks with Subhash K Jha about Suneel Darshan’s Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, which also featured Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, and Karisma Kapoor and shares what it was like to work, once again, with Raakhee Gulzar.
Suneel Darshan was completely bowled over by your professionalism and expertise during the shooting of Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love?
The feeling is mutual. I think Suneel is extremely focussed and organized. Long before Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love went on the floors, he knew exactly what he wanted to do on screen, down to the music and songs. That, I think, is the forte of this millennial generation. Filmmakers in the past were also organized in their own way. But what they had it all in their heads. This millennials directors puts it down on paper. And there’s a whole battery of...

Aamar Boss, starring the legendary Rakhee Gulzar and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, has made its mark as the film crosses the 1 lakh theatre within just 7 days of its release. The emotional mother-son drama, which hit cinemas on May 9, has not only won hearts but also brought audiences back to theatres in large numbers, all without the advantage of a holiday release.
Directed by the celebrated duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Aamar Boss is being hailed as one of the biggest Bengali theatrical hits of 2025 so far, already claiming the title of the biggest opening and highest Sunday collection of the year for a Bengali film. Its powerful performances, heart-tugging narrative, and universal emotions are striking a chord across generations.
This milestone becomes even more significant in the current climate, where several production houses are opting for direct-to-ott releases due to sensitive market conditions. Windows, however, chose to back the theatrical experience,...

Raakhee Gulzar talks with Subhash K Jha about life, family, and her new hit Bengali film Aamar Boss.
Your first Bengali film in a long time is a work of joy and beauty forever?
You really liked Aamar Boss so much? I am so glad. I know you wouldn’t lie to me. You know when the co-directors (Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy) offered me the film, I wasn’t sure. My last Bengali film is yet to be released. I don’t know what happened to it. But then I saw Shiboprasad and Nandita’s film.
You mean their blockbuster Raktabeej?
No, no, not that one. The earlier film Hami about a child’s upbringing. I was immediately excited about working with Shiboprasad and Nandini.
Their past work apart, they have conceived a role for you in Aamar Boss which not many actresses your age are given?
I agree.

The directorial duo Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy double-handedly rescued Bengali cinema from boxoffice blues with the blockbuster true-life crime thriller Bohurupi in 2024.
It is not short of astonishing how far removed the world of Aamar Boss, the directorial duo’s new heartwarming and, yes, heart-warming work, moves from their previous film.
This time there is more familial frisson, more gloss too, than we normally get to see in Bangla films. A lot of this warmth and sophistication comes from Raakhee Gulzar as the tough-cookie matriarch Shubra Goswami who lights up every frame each time she is on screen. And when she is not, we miss her presence, although the supporting cast is very agreeable, especially Sauraseni Maitra who is elegantly emphatic as Sarbani an employee at a Bangla publishing house helmed by Animesh Goswami (played with admirable empathy by the co-director Shiboprosad Mukherjee) who tries hard to be the...

Poonam Dhillon speaks with Subhash K Jha about 30 years since she debuted on the big screen with Yash Chopra’s drama Trishul, which starred of Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Raakhee Gulzar, Gita Siddharth and Sachin.
It is 30 years of your debut film Trishul?
Wow, so many years have passed!!! I was a 15-year-old kid who had just taken the 10th standard exam. I knew nothing about acting, screen, or stars at that time, having seen only probably 4 to 5 films in my life.
Which films had you seen before?
Dosti many times at all Children’s Day celebrations in school), Guddi, Mera Naam Joker, and I think maybe a few more. That’s it. I was super-shy and awkward and had no idea What Huge stars I was working with. This was the zamana before the internet and Instagram.
Your song in Lataji’s voice, ‘Gapuchi’ was a big hit?...

Subhash K Jha revists Aparna Sen’s Sonata, which starred Shabana Azmi, Lillete Dubey, and Aparna Sen, that released in 2017. We also hear from the director and Shabana Azmi about the making of the film.
There is no sannata in Sonata. The three protagonists talk endlessly. This enchanting chamber piece is like a Beethoven symphony for the sexually impaired. Nothing really ‘happens’ in the 90-minute celluloid discourse on post-menopausal sexuality and other related topics on how to be a woman past her prime without guilt and the accompanying crimes.
Where are the Indian films that celebrate middle-aged women’s sexuality? Sonata is the psychological exploration of three unmarried women facing a mid-life crisis -Aruna Chaturvedi, Dolon Sen, and Subhadra Parekh, a professor, a banker, and a journalist. The 103-minute film revolves around the emotional ups and downs of these three friends, culminating in an event of global magnitude, confronted with...

Shatrughan Sinha Once Revealed How A Fight Sequence Filming Was The Reason Behind His Rift With Amitabh Bachchan (Photo Credit –Facebook)
Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha are two of the stalwarts of the Hindi film industry. They both have established themselves in showbiz with their traits, and their long-running alleged feud has always been a hot topic in the media. Sinha once revealed that it started from a fight sequence in Yash Chopra’s Kaala Patthar. Keep scrolling for deets.
However, the veteran actor acknowledged that his and Big B’s relationship eventually soured due to professional and personal differences. In his memoir, Sinha suggested that a contributing factor to their estrangement might have been the presence of a well-known actress—widely believed to be Rekha—who was linked with Big B then.

Manoj Kumar, who passed away at 87-years-old today had an legendary career as both an actor and noted film director. Tributes from the film fraternity are pouring in for Bharat Kumar to honor his work and life.
Waheeda Rehman , who did a string of superhits, has huge compliments to pay Manoj Kumar. “I was unfortunately never directed by him. I think his achievements as a filmmaker far exceeded his career as an actor. Let me tell you, as an actor, he was a superhit. My films with him were all successful: Neel Kamal, Patthar Ke Sanam…In Aadmi, where I was the heroine, he got to share screen space with his idol Dilip Kumar.”
“There will never be another Manoj Kumar,” says Raakhee Gulzar, who worked with the Legend in Beimaan and Santosh. “His dedication to making patriotic films was fierce. He was much better as a director than an actor.

Aparna Sen’s contribution to cinema as an actor and a director is monumental. From a playful young bride in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali anthology film, Teen Kanya (her debut), to a strong, independent working woman determined to teach the boarders of a boys’ hostel a lesson in Dinen Gupta’s comedy romance film, Basanta Bilap, Sen had garnered accolades as an actor by the time she began her directorial journey with 36 Chowringhee Lane.

From stories of casting couches to the rampant discrimination faced by women cinematographers and filmmakers, there is no denying that the film industry is a gendered space. Subhash K Jha celebrates the magic of composer and music director, Khayyam, in this fascinate feature.
We all know about the magic of Khayyam’s music. The sheer elegance and melodic predominance in his songs are stuff legends are made of.
There are so many stories behind the great songs that we don’t know. For instance, the tune that finally went into Sahir Ludhianvi’s song ‘Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayaal aata hai’ was first offered to Chetan Anand for a film that Chetan Anand was to make in 1950.
The film got shelved. When Yash Chopra offered Kabhi Kabhie to Khayyam—which was the belated turning point in the composer’s career—Khayyam asked Chetan Anand back for the tune. Chetan obliged. That’s how the biggest hit of Kabhi Kabhie was made.

To celebrate the day of pyaar, Valentine’s Day, Subhash K Jha shares his picks for the 10 films he believes are the most romantic Hindi films of all time!
1.Amar Prem (1971): The underrated director Shakti Samanta created two timeless odes to love Aradhana and Amar Prem both featuring the charismatic couple Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. My Valentinian pick is Amar Prem. There is not even an embrace between the lead pair. He is a married man seeking comfort in his loneliness. She, a prostitute mothering him, nurturing his heart as though he were her child. Never seen love so sublime in any film. Never felt more happy to know love lives.
2.Bobby (1973): Every generation has its favourite love story. I pity those who think Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaynege are the acme of amour. Excuse me, Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in Raj Kapoor’s rugged,...

Actor Vinod Mehra who was who was born on February 13, 1945, and who passed at age 45 on October 30, 1990, was never an active advocate of his own talent. You would never hear this quiet, polite, affable actor talking about his own performances, let alone his turbulent personal life.
Unlucky in love and marriage, he married twice before settling down to a peaceful matrimony with Kiran Mehra. They had two years and two children together before he passed away suddenly in 1990.
Sadly, Vinod’s personal life made bigger headlines than his quiet, assured performance in a never-ending stream of films from 1955 when he made his debut as a child artiste. Vinod did eight films as a child. His debut as a leading man in Ek Thi Reeta was unremarkable. In an era when actors shouted to be heard, Vinod was the mute performer. His performances never screamed for attention.
He never felt threatened doing heroine-centric film.

Everything in Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun looks incongruous, at odds with contemporary cinema. Both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan look like ancient clones of their current selves. They are not really the backbone of the plot.
Raakhee Gulzar and Amrish Puri are. Their embarrassing over-acting bordering on an incurable hamminess, could inspire an entire thesis on how good actors were coerced to go over-the-top in the 1990s, as it was believed that audiences of the past eras really wanted their favourites to Act.
Directors who scream, “Aur acting aur acting!” from behind the camera until the actors fainted and feel to the ground. This actually happened to Twinkle Khanna during the shooting of Dharmesh Darshan’s Mela.

Once I asked the inimitable unforgettable Dev Anand what his birthday wish was… His response was typical Da: “I don’t make wishes. I make them come true. I go with exactly what I want to do. It’s an ongoing process. As long as I feel creative and as long as I feel there are some people who want to watch my films I’ll continue to make them. If I’m not as enthusiastic about my new film then I’ve no business making it. The very fact that I’ve picked up the responsibility of directing another film proves I’ve the energy for it. The day I don’t, I won’t make any more films. My audience, my fans are my source of energy. I need my fans’ good wishes gives me my energy?”

As he turns 80 on October 11, the living legend Amitabh Bachchan – Bollywood’s biggest superstar in its 110-years’ history – can look back with satisfaction at his long career on the silver screen, where he became a icon along with a galaxy of leading ladies.
It was in 1969 – when man landed on the moon – that Bachchan took his first small step with “Saat Hindustani”, which ultimately proved to be a gigantic leap for his megastar-dom.
But he stood out in his maiden film – in the crowd of six other actors jostling for screen space in the pacey thriller themed on the Goa Liberation – with the sole female revolutionary – Shahnaz Vahanvati (daughter of the comedian Agha), gunning to free the west Indian territory from Portuguese clutches.
Subsequently, Bachchan notched a record of sorts, working with six generations of new, established, senior or junior heroines ranging from Mala Sinha and Nutan...

Nikamma
Starring Shilpa Shetty, Abhimanyu Dasani, Abhimanyu Singh
Directed by Sabbir Khan
No, this is not a film about a guy name Nik and his amma. Nikamma , as Tusshar Kapoor taught us in a song many years go, means a wastrel, a good-for-nothing, a lukha, a bekar berozgaar bematlab insaan…
And if you think Abhimanyu Dasani is the Nikaamma of the title then, ha ha, they fooled you. No, dear potential audience, the nikamma in the title is us, the spectators sitting in the theatre watching this garbage masquerading as a movie experience.
One has to be a full-fledged nikamma to inflict this suffering on oneself.
Or maybe some filmmakers think we Indian are suckers for masochism. So bring it on, baby. This is the story of Adi and Avni, Devar and Bhabhi who love to hate each other until poor Sachin Khedekar(playing Adi’s chirpy Chachaji) reveals the big secret: Bhabhi Avni,...

Rohan Mehra, who is all set to embark upon a new journey by making an acting debut with Baazaar, has been working in the film industry for the last two years. Having assisted eminent film makers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rohan also tried his hand at photography, composed music and did some ghost writing, before he got a photo shoot done and posted pictures on Instagram, when he caught the eye of Kal Ho Naa Ho’s director Nikkhil Advani who surprised Mehra with a phone call. Five years later, Rohan faced the camera for the first time with Nikkhil Advani’s Baazaar, directed by Gauravv Chawla. The film stars nawab Saif Ali Khan along with the talented Radhika Apte.
“It’s exciting working with actors of their stature in my first film as it throws me into the deep-end straightaway. I was nervous but the nerves have cooled down.

Filmmaker Anil Sharma best remembered for films like Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, The Hero: Love Story of Spy and the more recent release Singh Sahab the Great that hit screens in 2013 will soon be returning to direction with a film titled Genius. Though the writer - director is gung-ho about the project, we hear that apart from him returning to filmmaking there are a couple of added reasons for him to celebrate. In fact Sharma will be launching his son Utkarsh as the lead protagonist in the film Genius.
While Sharma will be announcing the film tomorrow, July 14, he confirmed the news to us saying, "July 14 for me is a very special day, for starters my father launched me on the same day back in 1980 with the film Shradhanjali that starred Raakhee, so in turn I think this is the best day that I should launch my son in films.

When Rohit Shetty announced the remake of the 1989 cult film Ram Lakhan, to be produced by Dharma Productions, what followed was a series of speculations about the casting. With the names of several A-listers being tossed around, we believe that the makers may have found their perfect Ram and his brother Lakhan for the remake.
From what we hear, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are the current contenders for the role and the two will soon be signed for the same. In the original Subhash Ghai blockbuster, Ram, the sincere and honest cop was played by Jackie Shroff and the enthusiastic grey-shaded role of Lakhan was played by Anil Kapoor. In the upcoming remake it is being that Shahid Kapoor will play the elder brother Ram whilst Ranveer will be seen as the younger Lakhan. An official announcement on the same is being awaited.

Starring – Tabu, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapoor and above all, Kashmir
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor
There is only one hero in Abhishek Kapoor’s massively disappointing and bogus adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. And it’s not Aditya Roy Kapoor. It’s Kashmir. The film, purported to be a romance between the bewitching Katrina Kaif and the besotted Aditya Roy Kapoor, romances just the Kashmir Valley. The rest is all mystery.
I recommend Fitoor be used to promote tourism in the Valley. As for Charles Dickens and Great Expectations, thankfully the author is not around to see how far his novel about forbidden love has been taken away from its roots.
Dickens’ title, as it turns out, proves prophetically ironic. You enter director Abhishek Kapoor’s snow-swept stunning world of stillness and turbulence, with a whole lot of expectations. You come away feeling cheated, betrayed and also angry for...

By now, everyone is aware of the fact that Mastizaade stars the eye-candy Sunny Leone in a double role. But what many don't know is that there is a scene in Mastizaade, where the makers have spoofed the cult scene from the film Karan Arjun in which Raakhee is 'extremely vocal and confident' that her Karan and Arjun will return. The said sequence in Mastizaade shows a lady (Rakhee's representation), while banging her head on a temple's bell screaming, "Mere Karan Arjun aayengey". Very unexpectedly though, her (supposed) husband appears in front of her with a packet of a leading condom brand in hand. He, then, gives a wise repartee stating, "Neither, Karan nor Arjun will come, because I had used the (leading brand) of condoms". When asked about the said scene, Mastizaade's director Milap Zaveri said, "Yes, there is such a scene in the film. But, it's an extremely short scene.

Is it just a mere coincidence that just days ahead of the release of the eagerly awaited Bajirao Mastani where the Great Clash between warrior-lovers Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is destined to happen, a new song 'Albela Sajan Aayo Re' from the film shows Priyanka Chopra dazzling us with her vivacious dancing. As for those adoring glances that she darts at 'Bajirao' Ranveer Singh ...this is a woman in love. No two ways about it. The song filmed in sublimely saturated colours of joy and ecstasy, is a celebration of home-coming. The wife breaks into a dance of rejoicing as her warrior-husband returns ...The song is in the tradition of Lata Mangeshkar's 'Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi' from Aawara...Or Kavita Krishnamoorthy's 'Mera Piya Ghar Aaya' from Yaaraana. Priyanka's expressions of ebullience are incredibly infectious. So far we've seen very little of her in Bajirao Mastani's trailers. In the...

Irrfan Khan who shot to fame after the undoubted international success of Slumdog Millionaire, is to star in Meghna Gulzar’s next film as a Police Officer.
The film will be centered around the real-life high profile case of the 2008 murder of a 13 year old girl, Aarushi Talwar and a 45 year old domestic helper who were found murdered in the Talwar’s house in Noida, India.
Meghna Gulzar is the daughter of famous lyricist Gulzar and actress Rakhee, and her last venture Just Married, failed to make a big impression on audiences, so only time will tell if this film makes the cut.
Shefali Shah will also be seen playing the role of Aarushi’s mother, Nupur Talwar and the film will be produced by Vishal Bhardwaj.
As of yet the title is unconfirmed and this film requires both tact and the right angle from which to portray the story in.

Ace filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, who is known for his unique films, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Thursday morning at 7.30am in Kolkata at the age of 49. He was reportedly suffering from pancreatitis.
Rituparno Ghosh was first acknowledged in the 90’s when he made films in Bengali with strong and sensitive subjects. His recent endeavours were with some Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Ghosh won many national awards and his film Chokher Bali starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Raima Sen was nominated for Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival in 2003.
Rituparno Ghosh was a bold director and did not refrain from touching the otherwise sensitively discussed topic of homosexuality. He played the role of a homosexual filmmaker in Kaushik Ganguly’s ‘‘Arekti Premer Galpo’ and Sanjoy Nag’s ‘Memories in March’. He was one person who never attempted to hide his sexual preferences.

Out of all the characters that you will come across in an Indian film, one that you will rarely see go astray is a mother. That too, the hero’s mother. She is an entity that restrains him with no physical bounds, gives him strength like no other energy drink, drives him to lengths beyond imagination (all within 2.5 hours) and without her, teaches him lessons universities worldwide have yet to discover. From being a sari clad soap opera box drama queen to a sophisticated career driven business magnet, she has transformed in front of us but one thing remains. The positive energy one feels from our filmi “Ma”. It may be a scene or a song, but she is there and her love unconditional. Yes, there may be some stories that forget about her, yet there is no denying, our cinematic mothers have sometimes been the saving grace for our films.
