John Wayne Copied Clint Eastwood With These '70s Cop Thrillers
Image
John Wayne won his first and only Academy Award for his memorable performance as cantankerous lawman Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. The 1969 Western marked Wayne’s last triumph within the genre, which he had virtually dominated since his star-making role in the 1939 Western film Stagecoach.

In the early 1970s, Wayne’s box-office standing was being threatened by the advance of a younger generation of Hollywood leading men, led by Clint Eastwood, whose rise to superstardom coincided with Wayne’s commercial decline. Wayne hastened this transition by turning down the titular starring role in the 1971 action thriller film Dirty Harry, which enabled Eastwood to transcend the international stardom he’d gained from Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy film series and become Hollywood’s foremost action star.

Clint Eastwood's 'Dirty Harry' Gets 4K Blu-ray Re-Release
Image
Clint Eastwood's most quoted movie of all-time is finally getting the 4k treatment. Eastwood's acting career is the stuff of legend, appearing in three of the most lauded westerns of all-time in Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy, an Oscar winning post-modernist Western, Unforgiven, as well as hits like Escape From Alcatraz and The Outlaw Josey Wales, and that doesn't include his directorial work. But, if there was one shot from a movie that is synonymous with Eastwood's career, and one misquoted line that goes with it, it has to be found in Dirty Harry.

Dirty Harry fans certainly feel lucky this month as the hit 1971 crime thriller is getting a remaster and a re-release. Per Blu-ray.com, Dirty Harry will be remastered in stunning 4K for a new physical release in the future. The announcement did not give a date for Dirty Harry's re-release.

Clint Eastwood’s Unfinished Projects and Mishandled Releases
Image
Clint Eastwood, a name synonymous with Hollywood’s golden era, stands as a towering figure in American cinema—a relentless auteur whose filmography spans over six decades. From gritty Westerns to hard-hitting dramas, Eastwood’s oeuvre reflects not just his evolution as an artist but also the changing tides of the film industry itself. Yet, even with an unparalleled legacy, Eastwood has not been immune to the whims of Hollywood’s increasingly precarious landscape. Projects shelved, ambitions curtailed, and creative endeavors lost to time—these moments in Eastwood’s career mirror a broader crisis within the industry. The state of contemporary Hollywood, dominated by franchise fatigue, risk-averse studios, and streaming’s relentless churn, has left even the most celebrated auteurs grappling with uncertainty.

Clint Eastwoods 10 Worst-Rated Movies, Ranked
Image
Clint Eastwood has been a Hollywood icon since he soared to stardom thanks to playing the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy. Having become one of the film industry's best stars and directors in the years since, the A-lister has taken on dozens of projects, racking up one of the most impressive careers in cinema. However, like most actors, he has his fair share of critical flops and box office failures too.

Best known for his work in the Western and thriller genres, Eastwood has endeared himself to generations of movie fans as a symbol of masculinity and the rugged American spirit. Typically playing the role of macho and abrasive antiheroes, the actor is far from perfect, and some movies show this. While he rarely makes a bad movie, particularly since becoming an icon, he still has his share of stories that, uncredited roles aside, simply...

The film was directed by Don Siegel and the screenplay was written by Harry Julian Fink, R.M. Fink and Dean Riesner.

10 Best Neo-Noir Movies Of The 1970s
Image
Neo-noir is a relatively recent wave of cinema that brought the success and popularity of the film noir genre back into the spotlight through great movies. The 1970s saw an uptick in neo-noir projects, and the decade has come to define the inception of neo-noir. However, these films couldn't exist without the original works of the noir genre and the actors that helped to create the archetypes seen frequently onscreen. The best film noir movies of all time were primarily produced between the 1940s and 1960s, so many actors of the Hollywood Golden Age starred in these crime thrillers.

While there are still dark shadows, detectives, and horrible crimes, there's much more to the neo-noir genre. There are many underrated neo-noir movies from the 1980s, as the 1970s and '80s were the peak of the revival of film noir. It's hard to know where to begin when unpacking the neo-noir genre,...

Why 1971 Clint Eastwood Classic Is The Most Accurate Depiction Of A .44 Magnum Detailed By Gun Expert
Image
Clint Eastwood's authenticity in handling guns in Dirty Harry sets it apart from other films with .44 Magnum guns. Eastwood's experience with guns from his Western films contributed to the success and accuracy of Dirty Harry's gun scenes. Guns have played a central role in Eastwood's career, from his early Westerns to his more mature roles.

A gun expert explains why Dirty Harry is the most accurate depiction of a .44 Magnum. Starring Clint Eastwood as the eponymous police inspector Harry Callahan, Dirty Harry is a 1971 crime drama about Harry's struggle to capture a psychopathic killer who is referred to as "the Scorpio Killer." Dirty Harry was directed by Don Siegel and featured a leading cast including Eastwood, Andrew Robinson, Harry Guardino, Reni Santoni, John Vernon, John Larch, John Mitchum, and Mae Mercer.

Speaking with Corridor Crew, gun expert Taran Butler praises the depiction of a .44 Magnum in Dirty Harry.

It’s one of the best cop shows of the 1960s! Detective Madigan’s police .38 is stolen by a mad-dog killer, forcing him to take extra risks just as more problems personal and professional close in on him. Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens and Harry Guardino give sterling performances, and the assured direction of Don Siegel keeps us on edge throughout. Manhattan detective Richard Widmark is up the creek without his .38 special — a maniac killer has stolen it. He’s desperate to get it back, while his personal and professional problems pile up. Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens and Harry Guardino give sterling performances, but the assured direction of Don Siegel is what keeps us on edge throughout. The classic crime saga pushed the limits of the incoming Ratings System — yet provided a style template for a decade of Universal cop shows. Siegel utilizes blunt jarring cutting effects to make its violence feel extra-intense — and for warped screen villainy, Steve Ihnat’s Barney Benesch has no equal — he has less than three minutes of screen time, but you’ll never forget him.

A Look at Al Capone in the Movies
Al Capone is America’s best known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law and order in the United States during the 1920s Prohibition era. Capone had a leading role in the illegal activities that lent Chicago its reputation as a lawless city and an interesting variety of Hollywood stars have had the leading role as Al Capone in the many films that have been made that featured him as a character.

The first film about Capone was produced when he was still making headlines. The main character may be named Antonio Camonte, but there’s little doubt as to who producer Howard Hughes had in mind when he and director Howard Hawks filmed Scarface during the Great Depression. Camonte shares more than the same initials with one Al Capone, who was about to begin his eleven-year sentence for tax evasion when the movie was released...

Review: “St. Ives” (1976) Starring Charles Bronson And Jacqueline Bisset; Warner Archive Streaming Service
By Don Stradley

Charles Bronson was 55 at the time of “St Ives” (1976). He was just a couple years past his star-making turn in “Death Wish”, and was enjoying a surprising run of success. I say surprising because Bronson had, after all, been little more than a craggy second banana for most of his career. Now, inexplicably, he had box office clout as a leading man. In fact, Bronson reigned unchallenged for a few years as the most popular male actor in international markets. Yes, even bigger than Eastwood, Newman, Reynolds, Redford, or any other 1970s star you can name. Many of Bronson’s movies were partly financed by foreign investors, for even if his movies didn’t score stateside, they still drew buckets of money in Prague or Madrid. Some have suggested that his popularity on foreign screens was due to how little he said in his movies (there was...

Lauren Bacall
R.I.P. Lauren Bacall, Sultry Star Of Stage And Screens
Lauren Bacall
Update August 14: Broadway will go dark: The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in memory of Lauren Bacall on Friday, August 15, at exactly 7:45 p.m. for one minute.

One of the leading ladies of Hollywood’s Golden Age died today after a stroke. The sultry, fiery Lauren Bacall was 89. MSNBC’s Thomas Robert broke the news in a tweet, and the Bogart estate has confirmed it. She was famous for starring — onscreeen and off — with Humphrey Bogart in such 1940s classics as The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage and Key Largo. In one of Hollywood’s great love stories, they married in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957. Four years later she married another acting legend, Jason Robards Jr.; they divorced in 1969.

The Essentials: The Films Of Don Siegel
In the credits to his masterpiece "Unforgiven," Clint Eastwood included a dedication: "for Don Siegel and Sergio Leone." Leone was a no-brainer, one of the great filmmakers who worked with Clint on a trio of films ("The Good The Bad And The Ugly," "A Fistful Of Dollars" and "For A Few Dollars More"). But Siegel was less beloved of cinephiles. A cosmopolitan Chicago native who studied at Jesus College, Cambridge, he started directing montages at Warner Bros. (including the opening scene of "Casablanca"), before breaking into features, with a string of B-movies with everyone from Robert Mitchum to Elvis Presley (the latter on 1960's "Flaming Star"), but became most notable for his work with Eastwood on five pictures from 1968's "Coogan's Bluff" to 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz."

Siegel was an unpretentious, unprecious director, best known for tough, muscular crime movies, but he never became an auteur favorite, despite his obvious...

'Woman Of The Year': 25 Things You Didn't Know About The Katharine Hepburn And Spencer Tracy-Led Classic
Fans of classic movies know that "Woman of the Year" marks the beginning of the 25-year partnership, on- and off-screen, between one of film's most beloved and enduring couples: Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Released 70 years ago today (on January 19, 1942), "Woman of the Year" came to define combustible romantic chemistry, thanks to the two fiery, evenly-matched leads. It launched a partnership that lasted until Tracy's death in 1967, a quarter-century union that resulted in nine films and an extramarital affair that was Hollywood's worst kept secret. What fans may not know is how the partnership came to be, who the real-life inspirations were for Hepburn's high-minded columnist and Tracy's earthy sportswriter, or the forgotten screen pairing of the two stars that came four years earlier. Read on for the untold story of "Woman of the Year" and its long afterlife in the realms of Broadway, TV, and magazines. 1. "Woman of the Year...

Hollywood’s Al Capone
The St. Louis Globe-Democrat is a monthly newspaper run by Steve DeBellis, a well know St. Louis historian, and it.s the largest one-man newspaper in the world. The concept of The Globe is that there is an old historic headline, then all the articles in that issue are written as though it.s the year that the headline is from. It.s an unusual concept but the paper is now in its 25th successful year! James Reviews Steve Carver’s Capone [DVD Review]
“You spend all your time hitting people?”

“I take Sundays off.”

Al Capone is a man who has been depicted or based on the man in films multiple times over the years. Roger Corman definitely saw the potential in making a period piece film and funded a Capone biographical picture. But only the way Corman knows best, which is to add some nudity, have some foul language and throw in a heaping pile of the red stuff throughout, giving this crime film an exploitation era feel that gives it a certain charm.

Al Capone is a two-bit hoodlum in New York City in 1901 when he makes a name for himself by beating up some cops, while trying to help some other criminals who were working for Frankie Yale (John Cassavettes). He doesn’t mention any names while in police custody, which gives him a one way ticket to Yale and...

The Plot: A soldier (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

The Buzz: Source Code looks to be a Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day sci-fi action romp. 35 seconds into the film’s trailer, I half expected Jake Gyllenhaal to utter, “oh boy.” He instead exclaims, “no, no, no, no,” as if to echo my thoughts exactly — I don’t want to see Gyllenhaal act the same “stop the terrorist on the train” scene, over and over and over again.
