- Hela Gruel was not only a German but also a dubbing actress.
- She took acting lessons with Doramaria Herwelly in Bremen, where she also made her debut in 1920. This was followed by engagements in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Lübeck, and Berlin.
- Gruel also worked on radio plays, for example in 1966 in "Geheimnis um einen nächtlichen Brand" (Mystery of a Nighttime Fire) from the Mystery series based on Enid Blyton's books.
- After the war, she took on a role in Schwerin. A position as artistic director in Freiberg was short-lived, and Gruel worked as a freelance actress in Berlin until 1957. Several DEFA films and DFF productions in which she appeared as an actress also date from this period. The type of woman she embodied was rather austere, with a short haircut as her trademark.
- Hela Gruel was born into upper-class circumstances as the daughter of a Bremen senator and merchant. Her parents opposed her desire to become an actress by sending her to a girls' boarding school in Thale. There she met Leni Riefenstahl.
