‘Hell High’ Resurrects a Strangely Sympathetic Killer Teacher [The Lady Killers Podcast]
Jason Brill, Christopher Cousins, Millie Prezioso, and Christopher Stryker in Le Marécage maudit (1987)
“The teachers are tough … but their exams are murder.”

It’s tough to be a teacher these days. Not only must they deal with overcrowded classrooms, tough administrators, crusading school boards, and budget cuts, but the actual job of educating youth is much more challenging than most can imagine. And that’s with students who aren’t trying to ruin your life. Douglas Grossman’s 1987 pseudo slasher Hell High features a group of defiant teens hell bent on corrupting their school’s proudest institutions while terrorizing students and teachers alike. They may not be the film’s central antagonists, but this group of young troublemakers may just be the most unlikeable bunch of high schoolers in horror movie history.

Miss Brooke Storm (Maureen Mooney) is a frustrated biology teacher trying to get control of an unruly class. When she asks rebel Dickens (Christopher Stryker) to file a recent test, he...

Competition: Win 80s slasher ‘Hell High’ on Blu-ray!
Image
Teenage kicks take a decidedly dark turn in director Douglas Grossman’s Hell High – out now on Blu-ray from Arrow Video – a twisted tale of delinquency pushed to its horrifying extreme, where Class of 1984 meets I Spit on Your Grave. To celebrate we are giving away a Blu-ray!

When high school football hero Jon-Jon (Breaking Bad’s Christopher Cousins) quits the team, he winds up falling in with a group of outcasts led by the sadistic Dickens (played to unhinged perfection by the late Christopher Stryker). With a willing new recruit in tow, the gang’s youthful hijinks soon spiral into a night of abject horror when they decide to play a cruel prank on the home of their teacher Miss Storm – who, unbeknownst to the youngsters, harbors a dark and tormented past.

Hell High – which was released in some international territories as Raging Fury – is a singular entry in the late ’80s horror canon,...

Feature: Teenagers… Beware of the 80s!
Image
The 1980s were a very dangerous time for the younger generation onscreen. Any teen or twenty-something movie character in the slasher genre of the era was pretty much guaranteed to get the chop. 1989 slasher gem Hell High is a case in point – no sooner have the credits rolled heads have started rolling. Or rather, a delinquent biker tears the head off a young girl’s plastic dolly in a rage – the little girl is not happy, and the biker and his girlfriend end up impaled on iron spikes.

To celebrate the release of Hell High on Special Edition Blu-ray, and Limited Edition O-card Blu-ray, from Arrow Video, here are eight more ‘80s slashers featuring everything from terrorising twins to killer mascots via masked, axe-wielding psychopaths.

Blood Rage (1987)

Twins Todd and Terry seem like sweet boys, that is, until one of them takes an axe to the face of a fellow patron at the local drive-in.

Fango Flashback: “Hell High”
Jason Brill, Christopher Cousins, Millie Prezioso, and Christopher Stryker in Le Marécage maudit (1987)
By 1989, the slasher genre was declared officially dead. The idea of a deranged killer going on a killing spree had been done to death, and fans and critics alike were bored. However, it was at this point that a little slasher film was released that, unfortunately, fell through the cracks. Hell High, directed and co-written by Douglas Grossman, is one of the more original examples of the subgenre; it follows the specific criteria, but at the same time adds new ingredients to the mix.
