“A Complete Unknown,” a musical biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as “Like a Rolling Stone” composer Bob Dylan, has cemented a box office milestone, notching $100 million in global ticket sales.
After seven weeks on the big screen, “A Complete Unknown” has grossed $70 million in North America and $30 million internationally for a grand total of $100 million. The R-rated film ranks as Searchlight’s sixth-highest grossing domestic release of all time and is expected to pass “Sideways” ($71.5 million) to crack the top five in the coming weeks.
James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directed the movie, which reportedly cost between $60 million to $70 million to produce. Since movie theater owners get to keep roughly half of ticket sales, “A Complete Unknown” likely won’t turn a profit in its theatrical run. But still, it’s no small feat these days for specialty fare to crack the $100 million mark.

Although Edward Norton never did get to mingle with the Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after only a single outing as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, his career certainly hasn’t slowed down one bit. Last week, he received his fourth Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. He may be up against some heavy hitters like Kieren Culkin in A Real Pain and Guy Pierce in The Brutalist, but if there was ever a more appropriate time for him to finally earn an Oscar win, it'd be now. Garth Hudson, the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and last original member of The Band, has died at the age of 87.
According to The Toronto Star, Hudson passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, January 21st at a nursing home in Woodstock, New York
Hudson was born Eric Hudson in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on August 2nd, 1937. Like their son, both of his parents were multi-talented musicians, and Hudson began playing piano at a very early age. His first official gigs were providing the organ for local church services and for a funeral parlor owned by his uncle. By 1949, he was playing professionally in dance bands around London, Ontario, eventually earning a spot in a group called Paul London and the Kapers.
It was after a Kapers show in London in 1961 that Hudson was first approached by his future-bandmates Ronnie Hawkins and Levon Helm, who asked if he would be interested in joining Hawkins’ band,...

Director James Mangold explores a pivotal chapter in Bob Dylan’s early career in A Complete Unknown. Our review:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that music biopics must follow The Formula. Whether they’re about Ray Charles or Elton John or Amy Winehouse or Brit rock outfit Queen, their stories follow a path of pivotal childhood experiences, chance meetings, paths to fame and the scourge of drink and drugs, before everything’s wrapped up with a rousing concert at the end.
The Formula was so well understood by 2007 that Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story fired a silver bullet at the wretched thing – and yet still the template staggered on, showing up largely unscathed in the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Back To Black.
Almost 20 years after he made Walk The Line – a film openly lampooned by the above-mentioned Dewey Cox Story – its director, James Mangold is back in...

Peter Yarrow, the singer-songwriter best known for his work in the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, whose career was later overshadowed by a conviction for molesting a 14-year-old girl, has died at the age of 86.
According to a representative, Yarrow died on Tuesday, January 7th, following a prolonged battle with bladder cancer.
Yarrow began performing while a student at Cornell University in New York. After graduating, he became immersed in the city’s fledging folk scene, eventually crossing paths with music manager Albert Grossman, who pitched him on the idea of forming a new age folk group. Yarrow was soon paired with Mary Travers and Noel Stookey to form Peter, Paul & Mary, and the trio released their eponymous debut album through Warner Brothers in 1962. Featuring songs including “Lemon Tree,” “500 Miles,” and a cover of Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer,” the album proved a mammoth hit, spending seven weeks at No.

Timothee Chalamet stars a young Bob Dylan at the beginning of his career, in director James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Guthrie’s friend and fellow social activist folk musician great Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) is there too, visiting Guthrie as he regularly did.
Seeger is polite to the young visitor but, at first, he assumes Dylan is just another fan, paying his respects to the legendary Woody Guthrie. A Complete Unknown is no longer completely unknown, because it is rocketing to box office success. With a budget of approximately $60 million, the movie follows Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) through the earliest days of his career. A Complete Unknown is set in New York in the year 1961, when a young Bob Dylan starts to make his way onto the music scene. The film transports viewers back in time through detailed sets, hair and makeup, and of course, costuming. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan.
Costume designer Arianne Phillips, who has worked with director James Mangold multiple times, creates the costumes for A Complete Unknown as well. Interestingly enough, she also worked on the musical biopic Walk the Line, meaning she once again styled for an actor portraying Johnny Cash. A Complete Unknown comes to theaters on December 25.

Where biopics are known to depict their subjects as larger-than-life figures to the detriment of their story and humanization, A Complete Unknown reckons with Bob Dylan’s enigmatic nature. James Mangold, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, seems to want to keep the singer as far out of arm’s reach as possible. I walked away from the film feeling like I didn’t learn anything new or interesting about Bob Dylan beyond what we already know about him. That seems to be by design but it’s no less frustrating from a storytelling point of view.

For the first time, Bob Dylan has publicly acknowledged the upcoming biopic about his early years in New York, “A Complete Unknown,” which stars Timothée Chalamet as the young folk music legend.
“There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me,” Dylan wrote on X, a platform on which he has recently become active.
He continued, “The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book.”
Chalamet responded the following day, writing on X, “Floored.

You don’t need to be a Bob Dylan aficionado to appreciate Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into the iconic folk singer. Even if your knowledge of Dylan’s career is limited to a few famous tracks or a vague recollection of his controversial shift to electric guitar, Chalamet’s performance in “A Complete Unknown” is undeniably a career best. He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.
On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Searchlight Pictures hosted two packed screenings of “A Complete Unknown” at the Fox Lot, followed by Q&a sessions featuring director and co-writer James Mangold, actors Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy. Chalamet, currently filming Josh Safdie’s new period project “Marty Supreme,” was notably absent, but his presence wasn’t needed to dominate the conversation.

The first reactions to Timothée Chalamet’s “A Complete Unknown” have started rolling in on social media ahead of the Bob Dylan biopic’s Christmas release date, with members of the press praising Chalamet, Monica Barbaro and more for their performances in the film.
“Timothée Chalamet slides into Bob Dylan with an effortless yet focused determination. Fearless in some hypnotic moments,” Variety‘s senior awards editor Clayton Davis wrote on X. “For me, it’s Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning that anchor the story of an illusive, mysterious man that remains in that sphere. James Mangold helms with confidence, with gorgeous sets and costumes. Much respect to one of the best to do it.”
Film critic Scott Menzel said Chalamet “delivers the performance of the year,” adding: “A true tour-de-force where Chalamet is never seen. Chalamet’s performance is not just about the voice and look but rather all of...

Decades never start quite on time, pop-culturally speaking, and it’s tempting to say that the Sixties didn’t really kick off until the Beatles played The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, just as “Smells Like Teen Spirt” started the Nineties in 1991. But as David Browne’s new book, Talkin’ Greenwich Village: The Heady Rise and Slow Fall of America’s Bohemian Music Capital, suggests, the Sixties’ spirit really began in Greenwich Village, not Liverpool — and the music that really got it going was written by Bob Dylan. In June of 1963, Peter,...

Timothée Chalamet recreates one of Bob Dylan’s most famous songs and visuals with a version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” for the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet’s new recording of the 1965 classic is the fullest offering yet of the actor’s take on Dylan’s singular singing voice. The previously released trailer for a Complete Unknown just included snippets of his renditions of songs like “Girl from the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
The visual, meanwhile, appears to incorporate some scenes from the upcoming biopic, plus some behind-the-scenes footage.

Timothée Chalamet as legendary songwriter and performer Bob Dylan discovers the cost of celebrity fame in the official trailer for James Mangold’s biopic A Complete Unknown.
Part of that price is having to meet audience expectations in the 1960s music world that came between the artist, his songs and his fans, Chalamet as Dylan complains in the preview. “They just want me to be singing ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ for the rest of my goddamn life,” Dylan says at one point in the latest look at the Searchlight film.
Having arrived as an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, Dylan attempts to change the course of American music but grows restless with having to be defined as his success builds. “If anyone’s gonna hold your attention on a stage, you have to kind of be a freak,” Dylan observes as...

Timothée Chalamet showed off more of his singing chops in the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” James Mangold’s bio-drama about Bob Dylan.
The new footage shows Chalamet singing “Girl From the North Country” as he arrives in New York from Minnesota. He begins to cozy up to fellow folk singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro) as the two spark a romance.
“Your songs are like an oil painting at the dentist’s office,” he tells her, clutching a guitar while shirtless in bed. At the kitchen sink, Baez responds, “You’re kind of an asshole, Bob.”
The trailer also features footage of Dylan and Baez duetting at the 1963 Monterey Folk Festival. A love triangle brews as Elle Fanning arrives as Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be arriving on Christmas Day in the US.
When it was revealed last month (alongside a trailer for the upcoming film) that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown would be arriving in cinemas in 2024, a few eyebrows went up. The project began filming back in March (according to IMDb) and wrapped near the end of June.
Still, Mangold can be a quick worker when it comes to the post-production stage of filmmaking, depending on the film of course. Whilst Le Mans ’66 took a year to make it through the editing room, his other musical biopic – 2005’s Walk The Line – released in cinemas six months after entering the post-production phase and it looks like the filmmaker will be doing the same again here.

According to experts, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, is in safe hands as fans and music historians react to the first trailer. James Mangold's upcoming film, starring Timothe Chalamet, is the second fictional feature telling the life story of the iconic music legend. I'm Not There, released in 2007, took an abstract approach to Bob Dylan's life as multiple characters embodied different aspects of Dylan's work across his long and storied career. A Complete Unknown appears to be taking a grounded and more specific approach, and it's already received good marks for historical accuracy.

Come gather ’round, people, wherever you roam. The trailer for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” is here, along with the first official footage of Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan.

In the trailer, Chalamet walks the streets of Manhattan, passing Dylan’s favorite spots including Cafe Wha? and Hotel Chelsea. Born in Orillia, Ontario in 1938, Lightfoot became known and beloved as Canada’s folk troubadour, an artist who stayed true to his roots despite international success. Songs like “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” depicted the culture, landscapes, and history of his Canadian home and grew to become both hits and signature tracks.
In the 2019 documentary Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind, Rush’s Geddy Lee called Lightfoot “our poet laureate… our iconic singer-songwriter,” while Tom Cochrane noted, “If there was a Mt. Rushmore in Canada, Gordon would be on it.”

Jonathan Taplin wasn’t present at the creation, but in rock & roll terms, he came close enough. He witnessed Bob Dylan going electric at the Newport Folk Festival, saw Jimi Hendrix and many others at Monterey Pop, flew into Woodstock while working for the Band, helped coordinate George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh, and was aboard the famous Festival Express, during which the Band, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and others rode a train around Canada, playing concerts along the way.
But those days were just the beginning of Taplin’s unique journey.

There’s really nothing like a good music documentary. Rivaled only by maybe true crime and movie documentaries, music-based films are great because they show the story behind the stories of our favorite artists, songs, bands, and record labels.
When you love documentaries the best place to find them all together is a streaming platform. Netflix reigns supreme, but there are a lot of other options out there at a cheaper price. From Hulu to Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Showtime, and Paramount+, you can enjoy tens of thousands of movies and TV series from your TV, phone, and other streaming devices for under $20 a month. Hulu is the most affordable option out of...
