For most of each year, Karolyn Grimes leads the sort of quiet, family-centric life that one might expect any retired 84-year-old grandmother to lead — but come December, that all changes. Indeed, when The Hollywood Reporter connected with her by telephone last week, the Seattle resident was, for the 22nd time, being celebrated at a festival in Seneca Falls, New York, and she would soon be rushing off to Detroit, where she would be a guest of honor at a similar gathering. Christmas was coming, and like Santa Claus, she had many places to go and people to see before the 25th.
That’s because 78 years ago, at the age of six, Grimes spent two weeks on the set of Frank Capra’s film It’s a Wonderful Life playing Zuzu Bailey, the daughter of Jimmy Stewart’s George and Donna Reed’s Mary — and in so doing, totally unbeknownst to her,...

"It's A Wonderful Life" is an unforgettable classic that renews itself every holiday season. The striking narrative articulates strong morals, like the importance of family and an individual's importance in a community, punctuated by almost hallucinogenic imagery of the ground opening up beneath one's feet. It's a heartwrenching picture made all the emotional by the sentimentality of Christmastime. The Frank Capra film is nostalgic for everyone, from older people who watched it as a child to the generations to follow who passed down the tradition to their children. Most kids aren't dying to sit down and watch a black-and-white talkie from studio-era Hollywood, and yet the film's fanbase gains new members every year.
But as the 1946 film ages, so too does its cast, and many of the main cast members have not made it to 2024, including leading man Jimmy Stewart. In fact, most of the adults in the film passed...

Once again, the holidays – or is it holidaze? – are upon us, bringing with it a flurry of Christmas movies.
You have your endless parade of cartoons, specials, Christmas-themed episodes of your favorite TV shows, bad holiday comedies (1996’s Jingle All the Way and 2007’s Fred Claus come to mind), and Christmas-set horror movies (1984’s Gremlins). Then there’s the cheesy yet feel-good Lifetime and Hallmark films. And how can we forget the 24-hour marathon of 1983’s A Christmas Story (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on Christmas Day?
If those don’t do it for you, maybe these lists of Christmas movies will.

Grant is a suave stranger who stirs up the strained marriage of Niven and Loretta Young in this fey but beguiling seasonal tale
There’s an unworldly charm and odd, innocent solemnity to this Christmas fantasy comedy from 1947, now on rerelease, directed by Henry Koster and starring Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young. Niven plays the sobersided Bishop Henry Brougham, a decent but now careworn man whose overwork has lately caused him to neglect the happiness of his sweet-natured wife Julia (Young) and infant daughter Debby (Karolyn Grimes). As the Christmas season approaches, the bishop is becoming a veritable Scrooge, a role he effectively shares with the wealthy widow Mrs Hamilton (Gladys Cooper). She was instrumental in getting him the bishop’s job in the first place, and is now exhaustingly stringing him along with a promise to fund the building of a vainglorious new cathedral with which the...

Kids say the darnedest things! Isn't that what Bill Cosby taught us back in the 1990s? Well, the legendary comedian was right, obviously, especially when it comes to memorable movie quotes. We wanted to take a look back through the decades at some of the most hilarious, touching, unforgettable lines said by kid characters (most are live-action, but there are a few animated characters too). We even asked some of our friends and readers what their favorites were and came up with this list of 25, but it just as easily could have been 50.
And if you notice we paid extra attention to the '80s and '90s, let's just say that's when many of us were growing up; we're sure younger (and older) readers could come up with an entirely different lineup of quotes. Feel free to share them in the comments!

It was a cruel irony of It's a Wonderful Life: The actress who played Zuzu, the 6-year-old girl whose flower petals symbolized the triumph of love over despair, ended up living a real life of heartbreak - enduring more pain and loss than most. "It's all in how you look at your life, because no one has a wonderful life. But you can make it...

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ sequel could get killed by Paramount (photo: James Stewart and Donna Reed in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’) What would the world be like if any one individual human being had never been born? In most cases, the world would quite possibly be an infinitely better place, but the overwhelming majority of (delusional) humans want to feel good about themselves and their place on our overpopulated, fast-rotting planet. Hence movies such as Frank Capra’s 1946 sentimental fantasy drama It’s a Wonderful Life, released the year after the end of World War II — which reportedly left about 60 million human beings dead (plus countless other non-humans), in addition to millions more maimed, homeless, and/or psychologically destroyed. Starring James Stewart as Small Town America family man George Bailey, who almost kills himself but is prevented from doing so by an angel with way too much time in his hands,...

Paramount Studios has threatened to take legal action over an upcoming sequel to It's a Wonderful Life.
Karolyn Grimes is set to star in a proposed follow-up to the classic 1946 movie, announced by Hummingbird Productions earlier this week.
However, Paramount has stated that the film will not continue without the "necessary rights", which are owned by the film studio.

Frank Capra's original festive classic starred James Stewart as George Bailey, a decent man facing serious financial troubles, before meeting an angel who shows him what the town would be like if he never existed.
On Monday (November 18), Hummingbird Productions announced a partnership with Star Partners for a sequel based around Bailey's grandson.

One will often hear the complaint that Hollywood puts out too many sequels and remakes. Whether or not that complaint is true, Variety is reporting news that will, assuredly, provide fodder for that argument – a sequel to "It's a Wonderful Life" is currently in the works. The new film will tell the story of Bailey’s grandson, who is also named George Bailey, as he is shown “how much better off the world would have been had he never been born.” Karolyn Grimes will reprise her role from the original film as Bailey’s daughter “Zuzu”, this time as an angel guiding Bailey’s grandson.
“The new film will retain the feeling of the original, and it simply must be shared,” Grimes said. “I’ve probably read close to 20 scripts over the years suggesting a sequel to ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ but none of them were any good. The script by Bob Farnsworth and Martha Bolton was wonderful,...

Oh crikey. They're doing a sequel to It's A Wonderful Life. We're not making this up. We wish we were.
Sometimes, we talk on this site about unnecessary sequels, reboots and brand extensions. But surely, we've never covered anything to leave quite the foul taste of this one.

It turns out even an icon of the big screen isn't safe from being exploited by Hollywood decades after its release, with It's a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story being revealed to be in development. Frank Capra's original is an undeniable classic, that, don't lie, you will have seen at least once in your life, and even though it was released in 1946, this still feels like a cash grab. The story of the sequel will follow the original quite closely, with George Bailey's daughter Zuzu (again played by Karolyn Grimes), now an angel, who must show Bailey's unlikeable grandson how much better the world would be if he was never born. Casting decisions for the movie won't be made till February, with the movie pencilled for release during the holiday season of 2015. Most likely the desired effect of the movie would be to envoke the Christmas spirit in people,...

Sixty-seven years after Clarence got his wings, a sequel has been announced for It’s a Wonderful Life. Frank Capra’s 1946 movie, in which an idealistic but desperate family man (Jimmy Stewart) imagines his town if he’d never been born, is a beloved holiday classic. Generations have grown up watching George Bailey spend his life helping others, only to find himself suicidal and wanted by the police after a financial calamity at the family’s ol’ savings and loan. To keep him from jumping off a bridge, an angel-in-training named Clarence shows him that all his good deeds haven’t been in vain.

On the list of the most loved films of all time, the holiday classic It’s a Wonderful Life has to rank pretty high, even after 67 years. Now a sequel is being made to the timeless classic. The decision to revisit the treasured film is sure to divide fan opinion.
Every year, millions of people sit down in front of their TV sets or computers to rewatch the beloved classic It’s a Wonderful Life. Nearly seven decades after it was first released, the movie is still a fan favorite. Few films have stood the test of time the way Frank Capra’s cherished Christmas film has. Therefore, the decision to make a sequel to the film is rather daring. While many may see it as a nice homage to the longevity of the original, others will surely condemn the filmmakers for daring to disrespect their much-loved classic.
Karolyn Grimes will appear in the sequel.

Because every time a bell rings, a classic movie gets a sequel, Variety reports that a sequel to It's a Wonderful Life is in development. Titled It’s a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story, the producers are aiming for a 2014 holiday season release, as it would've made for a very unusual summer blockbuster. The story focuses on George Bailey's grandson (also named George Bailey to make it extra confusing for old people), who's visited by an angel (played by Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu in the original) that shows him how much better everyone would be if he had never been born. Before you get too excited, New York Post's film editor Lou Lumenick tweeted, "Don't worry, It's A Wonderful Life sequel not gonna happen. Rights hopelessly tangled, as those behind 1980s Broadway musical discovered." Maybe re-holster your moon-lassos for now.

It’s official, nothing is sacred. Quite possibly the most unnecessary sequel in the history of unnecessary sequels in development, as a follow-up to Frank Capra’s classic 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life is in the works by producers Allen J. Schwalb of Star Partners and Bob Farnsworth of Hummingbird. Farnsowth and Martha Bolton have already written the screenplay, which revolves around George Bailey’s grandson being visited by an angel. Karolyn Grimes, who played Jimmy Stewart’s daughter Zuzu in the original, has apparently agreed to return to play the angel in the proposed sequel. The producers are currently on the hunt for a director (good luck), and plan to begin filming in Louisiana next year in anticipation of a hoped-for holiday 2015 release date. Hit the jump for more. Per Variety, the budget for the film is said to be in the $25 million to $35 million range, and the...

Our sister publication Variety just bannered an exclusive that there is a sequel in the works to the charming Frank Capra-directed Jimmy Stewart film It’s A Wonderful Life. Here, the actress who played Bailey daughter Zuzu (Karolyn Grimes) returns as an angel to advise George Bailey’s grandson (cleverly named George Bailey) because he has turned into a douchebag. While my first impulse is to label this a sign of the apocalypse, particularly after I see stories about Robert De Niro talking about a Taxi Driver sequel, maybe the Wonderful Life‘s backers at Star Partners are on to something. Even if something is considered a sacred cow, if that cow was run through the slaughterhouse, wouldn’t there be some tasty steaks for all? I need to stop judging. You could take the progeny of a number of classic films and continue those beloved story lines. Why,...

We.ll just go ahead and rip the bandage off: It.s A Wonderful Life is getting a sequel. And not a made-for-tv Hallmark-Lifetime-ABC Family-style sequel, but an actual feature film that follows up on the 1946 Frank Capra classic, which will focus on George Bailey.s unlikable grandson. Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu in the original film, will appear in the sequel, taking what sounds like the Clarence role. Variety says this project is a collaboration from Star Partners and Hummingbird Prods, and it will be titled It.s A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story. The goal is to get the movie into theaters in time for the 2015 holiday season. The original film starred Jimmy Stewart as a man who spends his life dreaming of the day he can leave the small town of Bedford Falls and see the world, but life keeps throwing obstacles in his path.

Because you all remember at the end of the 1946 holiday classic It's a Wonderful Life that Nick Fury showed up and asked George Bailey to become S.H.I.E.L.D.'s accountant, we're getting a sequel. Okay, that's only half true. Variety reports that Star Partners and Hummingbird Productions are working on some fodder for the bargain bin in the form of It's a Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story. But rather than following the further exploits of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), this film would follow Karolyn Grimes reprising her role as Bailey's daughter Zuzu from the original film, but as an angel who helps another Bailey. It's been close to 60 years since the release of "It's a Wonderful Life," but the beloved holiday classic is gearing up for a sequel.
Variety reports that the follow-up will be titled "It's A Wonderful Life: The Rest of the Story," and focus on the grandson of George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), also named George Bailey. But unlike the 1946 flick, in which a guardian angel showed a suicidal Bailey the positive impact he had on others' lives, the present-day Bailey, described as "unlikeable," will instead be shown "how much better off the world would have been had he never been born."
While that sounds pretty bleak for an allegedly feel-good family film, those involved with the sequel say the movie will closely mirror its predecessor.
"The storyline of the new film retains the spirit of the original -- every life is important as long as you have friends," said co-writer Bob Farnsworth.
