Baby Reindeer creator and star gets HBO behind new BBC drama, Lions

Despite the controversy, Gadd is parlaying his new success with another series he announced prior to becoming an overnight phenom.

Deadline is reporting that Gadd’s BBC drama, titled Lions, now has the strength of HBO on board. The synopsis, per Deadline, reads, “The series asks ‘What does it mean to be a man?’ When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”

She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”

The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to The Lost King ahead of its debut at the Toronto Film Festival.

The film reunites the team behind 2013’s Philomena — Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope — for a comedy-drama based on a true story about Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, and the historian who helped uncover the remains of King Richard III, lost for more than 500 years, beneath a carpark in the English city of Leicester.

The discovery, in 2012, was the culmination of years of obsessive research by Langley, who faced the incomprehension of friends and family and the derision of experts and academics, and whose role was largely overlooked. Coogan will play Langley’s husband and Frears will direct from a script co-written by Coogan and Pope.

Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. Steve Coogan, Harry Lloyd, and Sally Hawkins in The Lost King (2022)
IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to “The Lost King,” the next film from director Stephen Frears that stars Sally Hawkins and Steve Coogan, ahead of the movie’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

“The Lost King” is a reunion of the creative team behind the acclaimed 2013 film “Philomena,” with Frears returning to direct from a script by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. In “The Lost King,” they tell the true story of Philippa Langley, an amateur historian who helped lead the discovery of King Richard III’s remains in 2012 after the monarch had been lost for 500 years.

TIFF, which runs between Sept. 8-18, will screen “The Lost King” in its World Premiere as part of a special presentation. IFC Films has yet to set a release date for the film.

Kaleidoscope secures UK distribution rights for Karen Gillan rom-com Not Another Happy Ending and sets release date.

Kaleidoscope Entertainment has acquired UK distribution rights for Glasgow-set romantic comedy Not Another Happy Ending. The film, which stars Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan, closed this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).

The HeyUGuys Interview: Not Another Happy Ending director John McKay
Having arrived from Glasgow the night before, and fresh from an early morning cast and crew screening of his latest movie, John McKay was set for a day of interviews when we met him in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.

The film in question, Not Another Happy Ending, was due to close the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival the following night with a star-studded closing gala at the city’s Festival Theatre.

Shot primarily in Glasgow, McKay’s film tells the story of a writer struggling to complete her second novel. Literally haunted by her impatient heroine, Jane Lockhart (Karen Gillan) is desperate to escape the two-book contract with her publisher, as she is still smarting from his decision to change the title of her debut behind her back.

Conceived almost five years ago by David Solomons, the original script was passed on to John McKay by the agent they shared. Alongside...

Screen Academy Scotland launches second talent search
The low budget initiative will be run at Edinburgh Napier University for a second year.

A search for Scotland’s next generation of talented film-makers has been launched for a second year, with a call for screenplays.

Contemporary Scottish stories are being sought by lo-fi, a low budget film initiative run by Screen Academy Scotland - a Creative Skillset Film & Media Academy at Edinburgh Napier University.

lo-fi Phase 1 will see up to six screenplays developed over an eight month period by up-and coming Scottish talent.

The projects will then be pitched to an industry panel, where one screenplay will be selected for advanced development and financing – lo-fi Phase 2.

Last year, five Scottish film-making teams were selected for lo-fi and now, after three development workshops, the finance panel chose the feature film Rocket Surgery (written by Glaswegian writer Stewart Thomson, to be directed by Luke Snellin) to go forward for financing and intended production.

The story centres...

Karen Gillan to star in Not Another Happy Ending
Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is to make her feature film debut as a leading lady in Glasgow-set indie comedy film Not Another Happy Ending which is due to start shooting next month. She plays successful writer Jane Lockhart who writes best when she's unhappy.

Karen recently wrapped a three-year stint as The Doctor’s companion – and promised that her character’s exit will be “unexpected”, as well as emotional.

French actor Stanley Weber will play Thomas Duval – the publisher to Karen’s novelist character Jane Lockhart, a passionate writer who suffers a bout of writers block on her second novel.

Here's the film's synopsis:

When a struggling publisher discovers his only successful author is blocked he knows he has to unblock her or he's finished. With her newfound success, she’s become too damn happy and he thinks she can't write when she's happy. The only trouble is, the worse he makes her feel,...

Doctor Who’s Amy Pond Tapped For Not Another Happy Ending
You may know actress Karen Gillan as her Doctor Who character, Amy Pond, but fans will soon know her as the star of Not Another Happy Ending. The fair-skinned actress just negotiated to continue on the cast of Doctor Who for a seventh season. If that excites you, you’ll really cheer after viewing season six’s trailer with Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor.

As for Not Another Happy Ending, Gillian there stars as a cooky writer, famous for a “miserable”, but best selling fiction novel who falls in writer’s block because since her success, she is too happy to continue writing sad content. In romantic comedy fashion, her publisher played by Black Death actor Emun Elliott (a 2009 Screen Star of Tomorrow), tries to break of her writer’s block by actively trying to make her more miserable, only to come to the realization that he is in love with her.
