Galeca, The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, has announced that Diane Anderson-Minshall, former CEO of Pride Media has been named executive director, alongside a new board of directors.

Anderson-Minshall is set to be the first woman to lead the LGBTQ+ journalism organization. As a journalist, editor, and author, Anderson-Minshall has previously served as editorial director of Out, The Advocate, Out Traveler, and Pride.com, as well as editor-in-chief or editor of Go, Curve, Girlfriends, Alice, Plus, Qsf, Passport, and On Our Backs. She has received numerous accolades, such as multiple GLAAD awards, Nlgja awards, and the 2016 Golden Crown Award for a memoir.

“I’m thrilled to step into this role and work with our incredible board members, and the broader creative community to continue amplifying LGBTQ+ stories,” Anderson-Minshall said in a Galeca press release. “We have exciting plans to elevate the work of our critics, celebrate representation, and connect with audiences in new ways.

Galeca is comprised of 360 film, TV and pop culture critics and journalists in the U.S., Canada, Australia and U.K. and recognized Yellowjackets, Abbott Elementary, Heartstopper, and more. Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics on Wednesday named “Yellowjackets,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Heartstopper” as the best in entertainment for its 14th Dorian TV Awards.

Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” won Best TV Drama, while one of its stars, Melanie Lynskey, was honored for Best TV Performance. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” nabbed Best TV Comedy, and Netflix’s “Heartstopper” nabbed Best LGBTQ TV Show.

Among the other honorees were “Euphoria” (Most Visually Striking TV Show), “Girls5eva” (Campiest TV Show) and “White Lotus” (Best TV Movie or Miniseries). Standout “White Lotus” cast member Jennifer Coolidge was a double winner, bagging Best Supporting TV Performance and Galeca’s Wilde Wit award.

Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets were among the top winners at the Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics’ Dorians TV Awards, which were announced Wednesday. The shows took home the awards for best TV comedy, miniseries and drama, respectively.

Bob’s Burgers, Heartstopper, Squid Game and The Other Two were also among the winners. Yellowjackets star Melanie Lynskey won best TV performance, while The White Lotus‘ Jennifer Coolidge won best supporting TV performance and the Wilde Wit award.

Galeca’s inaugural TV Icon honor (streamlined from its original name, The “You Deserve An Award!” Award), came out a tie. The Good Fight and The Gilded Age star Christine Baranski shares the title with comic actress Cassandra Peterson, known best as her alter ego Elvira.

A cigarette smoked by actor Russell Crowe on Australian television has sparked a legal battle. The Nine Network has launched a challenge in Sydney's Federal Court against a ruling by Australia's broadcasting watchdog that it had breached a law banning the advertising of cigarettes. The Australian Broadcasting Authority says that an interview with Crowe aired on the station's "60 Minutes" program in October 2000 that showed the Oscar-winning actor brandishing a packet of Marlboros as he lit up breached the Tobacco Advertisement Prohibition Act. Part of the interview was replayed the following week after viewers criticized Crowe -- Oscar-nominated for his portrayal of a tobacco industry whistle-blower in The Insider -- for his smoking habit. The authority said that while the original footage was an "incidental accompaniment" allowed under the act, the repeat broadcast "recklessly" constituted a tobacco advertisement. It decided, however, not to fine the media organization. Nine Network lawyer John Griffiths told Federal Court judge Arthur Emmett that the finding was "perverse and irrational" and the authority should be ordered to reconsider its ruling. Nine Network had discouraged rather than encouraged smoking when it referred in the interview to the movie star's habit as "weakness to the demon weed," Griffiths said.
