‘The Lost Bus’ Review: You’d Swear It Was Matthew McConaughey Who Saved 22 California Kids After Seeing Paul Greengrass’ Chaotic Docudrama
Image
Eighty-five people died in the 2018 Camp Fire that consumed the town of Paradise, Calif., but the number could have been higher, if not for the bus driver who shepherded 22 elementary school children through the inferno. Witnessing how close they came to being burned alive and reliving the satisfaction of being reunited with their parents are the key reasons people might want to see real-life disaster movie “The Lost Bus,” but don’t underestimate the draw of movie star Matthew McConaughey. His character may be a real-life hero, but on screen, it feels like he’s the one making sure those kids turn out alright, alright, alright.

As directing assignments go, “The Lost Bus” seems ideally suited to Paul Greengrass, who might’ve had better offers to consider before 2020’s go-nowhere Western “News of the World.” Apple was lucky to get him for a sensational docudrama which lends itself to the “United 93” helmer’s immersive,...

‘The Lost Bus’ Heats Up TIFF: Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera Deliver in Harrowing Wildfire Thriller
Image
The world premiere of “The Lost Bus,” the latest Apple Original Film from director Paul Greengrass, debuted to strong audience response and early awards speculation Friday night at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The gripping survival thriller dramatizes the real-life story of a school bus driver and teacher who guided 22 children to safety during the devastating 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California that claimed 85 lives and destroyed more than 18,000 structures.

Based on journalist Lizzie Johnson’s non-fiction book “Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire,” “The Lost Bus” recounts a perilous journey through flames. Sparked by faulty electrical transmission lines and fueled by high winds, the Camp Fire scorched over 150,000 acres and nearly wiped the town of Paradise off the map.

Matthew McConaughey stars as Kevin McKay, a down-on-his-luck school bus driver who rises to the occasion as fire bears down on the community. America Ferrera plays Mary Ludwig,...

Matthew McConaughey on ‘The Lost Bus,’ Nicolas Cage in ‘True Detective’ and What It Will Take to Play Rust Cohle Again: ‘Fire and Originality’
Image
“Any character that I play, I always ask, ‘What’s their monologue?’” Matthew McConaughey says. “Whether it’s subtext or whether it’s spoken, you gotta have your monologue before you can say your dialogue.”

And dialogue is something that McConaughey, with a Southern drawl that veers between seductive and evangelical, excels at delivering. But when he read the script for his new film, “The Lost Bus,” McConaughey wasn’t sure it was for him. As a fan of “Captain Phillips” and “United 93,” he wanted to work with director Paul Greengrass, and the topic, a true story about a bus driver named Kevin McKay who rescued 22 children during the 2018 Camp Fire, was the kind of propulsive adventure that he loves. But there was nothing for McConaughey to access — no inner monologue to explain what turned Kevin from an ordinary guy into an extraordinary hero.

After talking with Greengrass, McConaughey realized he’d been wrong.

‘A House of Dynamite’ Review: Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson in Kathryn Bigelow’s Precision-Tooled, Viscerally Unsettling Nail-Biter
Image
Eight years since her last feature, Kathryn Bigelow returns with an unrelenting chokehold thriller so controlled, kinetic and unsettlingly immersive that you stagger out at the end of it wondering if the world will still be intact. Though it’s less a war film than a drama about the aggressive threat of war, A House of Dynamite is very much of a piece with the director’s later-career gut punches, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty.

It’s a testament to the justifiably high regard in which Bigelow is held that she has drawn such a deep bench of first-rate actors, several of them onscreen for just a brief scene or two yet all making vivid impressions. The large ensemble cast has no weak link.

People tend to dip into the same pool of adjectives to describe the director’s best work — raw, gritty, unflinching, intense and documentary-like in...

The Lost Bus: Paul Greengrass Aiming For ‘Most Realistic Depiction Of Fire Ever On Film’
Image
The true events portrayed in Paul Greengrass’ new film were raw, real, and dangerous. And so, when making The Lost Bus, the filmmaker wanted the results to feel that way. In November 2018, the town of Paradise in California was caught up in a horrific wildfire that killed 85 people, injured 19, and destroyed 1800 homes. And through that devastation, school-bus driver Kevin McKay drove 22 children to eventual safety in the flaming hellscape, navigating one of the most hostile environments imaginable. Now, Greengrass brings that story to the screen with Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera (as fellow teacher Mary Ludwig), with one cinematic aim: “I wanted it to be the most realistic depiction of fire ever put on film,...

Netflix Lands Matthew McConaughey, Cole Hauser, Nic Pizzolatto Show in Bidding War (Exclusive)
Image
As August comes to a close, Hollywood has been hit by some heat: A bidding war over a red-hot television project that included several major streamers — and with Netflix coming out on top.

The mysterious and as-yet-untitled project brings together three intriguing names: True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, his True Detective season one co-lead Matthew McConaughey and Yellowstone fan favorite Cole Hauser. Skydance Sports is the company behind the project.

Sources say Amazon, Apple and Netflix were on the court for this one, with Netflix winning. The project is considered in development with deals with McConaughey and Hauser to star are being finalized.

Notably absent from the mix was HBO, which has had a rocky relationship with Pizzolatto, who last year openly dissed the network’s fourth season of the anthology crime drama he created. McConaughey, meanwhile, was previously in talks to potentially star in a Yellowstone spinoff series. Creator...

Matthew McConaughey SXSW Pic ‘The Rivals Of Amziah King’ Eyes U.S. Release Through Black Bear’s New Distrib Arm
Image
After launching its domestic distribution arm, financier Black Bear is working on a plan to release the critically acclaimed Matthew McConaughey crime drama The Rivals of Amziah King into theaters.

The pic drew a standing ovation and a 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes out of this year’s SXSW, but got no immediate buyers. Peg that to the wonky economics of the acquisition business nowadays and the rift between production cost and sales prices. There are several indie movies that have gone unsold from the agencies or have found a long road to distribution: Next weekend, Vertical is finally releasing Ron Howard’s period thriller Eden, which stars Ana de Armas, Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney and Vanessa Kirby, from last year’s TIFF

Rivals of Amziah King was screened at Berlin to buyers, but given its back country-set Americana storyline, it’s a hard sell overseas.

The pic is directed and...

The feature drew a rousing response from the SXSW audience in Austin, Texas, but has remained on the table until now.

However with a pipeline to fill, ambitious Black Bear may...

Matthew McConaughey and Samuel L. Jackson’s Legal Thriller 'A Time to Kill' Resurfaces on Streaming
Image
Mere days after Collider exclusively previewed a new image of Matthew McConaughey in his upcoming thriller, The Lost Bus, one long-forgotten film from the star has returned to streaming nearly 30 years later. McConaughey stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction) and Sandra Bullock (The Proposal) in A Time To Kill, the 1996 legal thriller following a young Mississippi lawyer who defends a black man who killed the two white men who sexually assaulted his preteen daughter. A Time To Kill had been absent from streaming for the last few months, but it was recently added to Paramount+ for all subscribers. The film earned solid scores of 67% from critics and 85% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it nearly quadrupled its $40 million budget by earning $152 million at the global box office.

The film is based on the popular John Grisham novel of the same name, which Akiva Goldsman adapted for the screen. The late Joel Schumacher,...

Jeremy Renner Starred In This Underrated Action Movie The Same Year As The Avengers
Image
There was a period when Jeremy Renner was on a winning streak. After landing a role in Kathryn Bigelow's award-winning war drama, "The Hurt Locker," he was appearing everywhere. Besides following it up with an impressive performance in the Ben Affleck-directed heist movie, "The Town," he then started switching between spy stories and superhero outings in three of the biggest franchises at that time.

After joining the Imf alongside Tom Cruise in "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" and drawing back his bow with Earth's Mightiest Heroes in "The Avengers," Renner dared to try and pick up the slack left by Matt Damon's amnesiac assassin, Jason Bourne, in the spin-off espionage thriller "The Bourne Legacy." While it received a lukewarm reception at the time and a so-so success at the box office, it feels that, even riding off of the "The Avengers," Renner's run in the Bourne-verse stands...

An Epic Christian Bale War Movie Almost Starred Matt Damon Instead
Image
Werner Herzog's film "Rescue Dawn" (which hit U.S. theaters in the summer of 2007) was a semi-fictionalized retelling of his own 1997 documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly." The documentary followed Dieter Dengler, a German-American pilot whose plane was shot down during the Vietnam War, leading to his imprisonment and torture in a jungle-bound Pow camp. Herzog took Dengler back to Laos and Thailand to relive his experiences there. "Rescue Dawn" extends the re-creation into a full scripted drama. Dengler was played by Christian Bale, giving an intense and marvelous performance. Meanwhile, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies co-star as American soldiers who've been captured alongside Dieter.

Herzog, always a stickler for authenticity, went back to Thailand to film in the locations where Dengler was lost and staged his escape. Notably, "Rescue Dawn" marked the first time Herzog ever used CGI in a movie, as he employed it to animate Dengler's initial plane crash.

Dazed and Confused is currently streaming on Peacock, but Netflix has confirmed that the film will begin streaming on the platform at the start of next month, on August 1. It earned strong scores of 94% from critics (Certified Fresh) and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $8 million against a $6 million budget.

Dazed and Confused, which also stars Ben Affleck, was written and directed by Richard Linklater, who recently teamed up with Glen Powell...
