Viacom’s Channel 5 Digs Into ‘Bake Off’-Style Competition Format ‘The Great Garden Challenge’
Exclusive: Gardening is the new baking, apparently… Viacom’s Channel 5 is getting its hands dirty with Bake Off-style competition format The Great Garden Challenge.

The British broadcaster has ordered six episodes of the non-scripted series from Crackit Productions, the producer of series including Trucking Hell and nun-fronted reality series Bad Habits, Holy Orders.

The new series is a garden design competition where teams of professional garden designers from around the UK go head-to-head to build gardens in less than 48 hours to benefit charity organizations. The eight teams are fighting to become the Great Garden Challenge Champion and win the chance to exhibit their garden at the prestigious Rhs Garden Wisley.

Receiving the brief two weeks in advance, the teams will take under-used, under-loved spaces and create gardens that will enhance the lives of some truly deserving recipients – from war veterans to care homes for the disabled, hospitals to dementia sufferers.

Crypt of Curiosities: Enzo G. Castellari’s Bronx Movies
Escape From New York is one of the greatest genre films ever made. It’s lean, it’s mean, and it has an absurd premise and setting that’s just begging for exploration. It’s a bona-fide John Carpenter classic. And much like Halloween before it, it inspired quite a few knockoffs. From Sergio Martino’s 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983) to Lockout (2012), Escape From New York has become a regular genre knockoff touchstone. But today, I want to focus on just two: Enzo. G Castarelli’s Bronx series.

The saga began in 1982 with 1990: The Bronx Warriors, Castellari’s attempt to blend Escape From New York, The Road Warrior, and The Warriors into one sci-fi actioner. The film is set in, well, the Bronx circa 1990, now a “no man’s land” where absurdly themed gangs run free and squabble over land without police interference. The skyline is intact,...

Blu-Ray Review: 1990: The Bronx Warriors
Blue Underground presents 1990: The Bronx Warriors via a Blu-Ray/DVD Combo set on June 30, 2015 and we got our review for you, right here.

The Movie

1990: The Bronx Warriors is an Italian mash-up of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York and Walter Hill’s The Warriors, as probably evident from the title (Escape from New York was called 1997: Escape from New York in Italy). The Bronx is labelled as “No Man’s Land”, where law & order is vacant and the borough is run by gangs that have their own territories – much like the gangs in The Warriors. Our main gang is “The Riders” which is a motorcycle club (that features real Hell’s Angels) lead by Trash (played by Mark Gregory) who believe that a war is about to begin with other gangs. What they don’t know is the Manhattan Corporation is planting a man...
