English writer, whose 1932 novel "Love on the Dole" detailed the plight of the Lancashire poor during the depression. It was later turned into a successful play and was filmed in 1941. Greenwood wrote further socially-conscious novels which never quite matched the success of his earlier work. He also set up a movie production company, Greenpark, in 1938, which made films for the British government.

His most famous novel, "Love on the Dole", was based largely on his childhood, coming from a poor family in Salford, Lancashire (now in Greater Manchester); his father, a hairdresser, died of alcoholism when the boy was nine and his mother supported the family on her low-paying job as a waitress.
