  • His son, Lucas Gray, is a storyboard artist for The Simpsons.
  • Before he started work on the screenplay for Le syndrome chinois (1979), he typed out the entire screenplay of La Reine africaine (1951) in order to learn the format. He wrote it standing up, because he had read that Ernest Hemingway wrote that way.
  • He graduated from Purdue, where he studied aeronautical engineering, and became an editor for Aviation Age. He later moved to Chicago and started making television commercials and documentaries.
