Hulu’s FX-produced limited series Say Nothing, like its source book by Patrick Radden Keefe, takes its name from the striking 1975 poem “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing,” by Seamus Heaney.
It’s a sad and angry piece that looks at the unfolding tragedy of the Troubles, critiquing simultaneously the culture of enforced silence that repressed free speech within Northern Ireland and the voyeuristic instincts of the outside media covering “the Irish thing.” The poem is dazzlingly focused on speech and storytelling, the power and limitations of words in contrast to what Heaney refers to as “Northern reticence, the tight gag of place / And times.”
Keefe’s mission, and the mission of Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop, the 2014 one), is to break through the silence. To use a different metaphor, it’s about the disinfecting power of sunlight. It’s also a chronicle of Northern Ireland reported on by...

Letitia Wright's powerful portrayal of Aisha brings light to the suffering and bureaucracy inherent in navigating the asylum system. Aisha's heartbreaking journey exposes the dehumanizing reality of immigrant struggles everywhere, but her friendship with Josh O'Connor's character is soul-affirming and beautiful. Aisha's one-dimensional portrait of politics is unfortunate, but it's ultimately a sobering and truthful film..
A young Nigerian woman seeking asylum in Ireland faces a looming deportation to certain death in the new film Aisha, which wounds your soul as a heartfelt, distressing, and dehumanizing journey through the bureaucratic maze of refugee resettlement. A captivating Letitia Wright gives light to the knife's edge panic and fear that an uncertain future brings. The film tackles difficult themes with a viewpoint that sometimes paints those against immigration with a generic, cruel brush. That said, there's no denying the harrowing reasons people flee their homelands for safety.

New Delhi, June 19 (Ians) Detecting Alzheimer’s may soon be as easy as spotting changes in cells of the retina of the eye, according to a breakthrough study led by international researchers including one of an Indian origin.
The study showed that physical changes in cells of the retina can occur at the same time as brain changes found in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers from Australia, Italy and the US investigated how two proteins — beta-amyloid and tau — known to build up in brains of Alzheimer’s patients, can also be found in cellular tissue of the eye, often long before symptoms are apparent.
The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Neuropathol, could potentially contribute to the future development of an imaging technique with the potential to detect Alzheimer’s disease with a non-invasive eye test.

A transfixing performance from Letitia Wright as a woman escaping violence and navigating a precarious safe haven anchors Aisha, Irish writer-director Frank Berry’s moving reflection on the plight of asylum seekers butting up against the cold indifference of bureaucracy. Matching Wright scene for scene is Josh O’Connor, again demonstrating that he’s among the best actors to emerge from Britain in the past decade, playing a diffident young man with his own troubled history who offers Aisha the balm of human connection. This tightly focused character study is a tiny film, with an emotional effect in inverse proportion to its size.
Berry (Michael Inside, I Used to Live Here) specializes in social-realist dramas that draw on his background in documentary and community filmmaking. Those roots are evident here in a film that grew out of his research into Ireland’s controversial Direct Provision system,...

The streamer has renewed the fantasy series for a second season ahead of the launch of the show. It comes as production has wrapped on season one in the Czech Republic.

When the banshees of the past come calling in Jez Butterworth’s fearsome The Ferryman, you can bet their shrieking will be blood curdling. Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall) and opening tonight on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the Olivier-award-winning play is a stunner, stitching familiar elements of Irish pastoral drama, The Troubles history and Butterworth’s magical, myth-tapping touches into something as powerful as anything on today’s stage.
If nothing else – and, believe me, there is much, much else – The Ferryman cements the playwright’s status as an unrivaled ending-writer, as this tale of a sprawling Irish family reckoning with decades, even centuries, of violence and division spirals to a conclusion that recalls, in its own way, those earth-pounding, theater-shaking footsteps of unseen Giants that closed Butterworth’s transcendent Jerusalem in 2009.
Not that you’ll want to rush a moment of the three hours and 15 minutes...

"You're right to be scared." IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Cured, from writer/director David Freyne. This is kind of a horror drama, more than straight horror, as it's set in a time "after" the zombie apocalypse hits and they've invented a cure. The plot involves a man who has been cured of the zombie disease be reintegrated back into the world, but those who are cured are shunned and mocked in society. He also still has all of his memories of when he did eat people, which causes a few other issues. Ellen Page stars with Sam Keeley, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Paula Malcomson, Stuart Graham, and Peter Campion . As cool as the concept for this is, the film is bad. I saw it at the Sitges Film Festival and did not like it at all, but that's just my own opinion.

Northern Ireland is pretty well known for having its fair share of “troubles” and as such makes for a pretty bleak backdrop to a dark, twisted and, at times, awkwardly funny tale of revenge, a camper van road trip, suicide and the murder of a mans mother… First rule of being a baddie, don’t mess with another guys mother, especially the quiet farmer type.
Donal (Nigel O’Neill) is a quiet lonesome farmer still living at home in a quiet Irish village with his mother (yes, his mother) Florence (Stella McCusker) . Donal spends his days fixing up the farm and drinking himself to sleep. When we meet him the only real thing he...

Following a warmly received world premiere at Sundance (read our review), the uncompromising revenge movie Bad Day for the Cut has now been acquired by Well Go USA.
Deadline reports that Well Go USA has picked up North American rights to Bad Day for the Cut, and that a theatrical release is expected sometime this year. Here's what Well Go USA's Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Dylan Marchetti, had to say about the feature film directorial debut of Chris Baugh:
"Bad Day for the Cut is an amazing achievement – it puts a spin on the revenge thriller that’s just so incredibly fresh. One review referenced both the Dardenne brothers and Jeremy Saulnier in the same sentence, and that sums up quite perfectly what Chris has accomplished here."
Directed by Chris Baugh from a screenplay he wrote with Brendan Mullin, Bad Day for the Cut stars Nigel O'Neill, Susan Lynch,...
