Ursula Grabley

Trivia

Ursula Grabley

Edit
  • Brunette German stage and screen comedienne, trained as a ballet dancer. Popular on screen in the 30's as dynamic, wisecracking or tomboyish second leads, noted for her trademark bobbed hairstyle. Her film career stalled during the war years after a private altercation with Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. From the 1950's onwards, she often played motherly figures in films and (increasingly) on television. She also provided the German voice for Lucille Ball. Ursula died of a stroke during a theatrical tour of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".
  • When she had a private argument with Reichspropagandaminster Joseph Goebbels she got a working prohibition and wasn't able to take part in movies between 1939 and 1944. Therefore she concentrated to the theater again.
  • During a tour with the play "Die Katze auf dem heissen Blechdach" ( Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) she died of a stroke.
  • The actress Ursula Grabley began as a ballet dancer and she went later to the Kammerspiele in Hamburg where she met the actor Viktor de Kowa. They got married in 1926 and went to the Volksbühne in Berlin two years later.
  • She played successfully on different stages and in 1929 she made her film debut with "Katharina Knie" (1929). From 1930 she soon conquered the hearts of the audience with entertainment and crime films.
  • After the war, Ursula Grabley lived in Hamburg , where she co-founded the cabaret 'Rendezvous'.
