    German character actor and theatrical director, on stage from 1920. Between 1922 and 1933, he was engaged at theatres in Gera, Weimar and Hanover. Between 1933 and 1944, he was active in leading roles at the Staatstheater Berlin under the direction of Gustav Gründgens. He later taught acting at the Max-Reinhardt school in Berlin. On screen, he played many small supporting roles as physicians, senior public servants, judges and aristocrats.
