  • He is best known for his role as the villainous leading man, McTeague, in Les rapaces (1924).
  • Worked as first mate on a ship, then prospected for diamonds in South Africa. Came to the USA via Canada, arriving in Hollywood on a train in 1914. Employed for some time as a movie extra or bit player, earning a mere $2 a day.
  • He often played oversized brutes and thugs of an unsympathetic nature.
  • Only actor to appear in separate death scenes filmed by Lon Chaney and Lon Chaney Jr.. He played Simon Buquet in Le Fantôme de l'opéra (1925) and later made an appearance as a villager in Le Loup-garou (1941).
  • He appeared in two consecutive Best Picture Academy Award winners: Qu'elle était verte ma vallée (1941) and Madame Miniver (1942).
  • In early films he was billed as T. H. Gowland.
  • A son with Sylvia Andrew is actor Peter Gowland and a son with Rachelle Dervaes.
