With the global success of Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu’ (2019), contemporary Malayalam cinema can boast of pushing the boundaries of conventional cinema, and filmmakers from the region with unique storylines are becoming more the norm than the exception in the film industry, which could now proudly declare to the world its creative dominance. But if we trace the history, the rich tradition of quality and thought-provoking filmmaking practices in Kerala has always been prevalent.
When the so-called parallel filmmaking movement was thriving in our nation, filmmakers from Kerala played a crucial role in enriching the culture of such creative endeavors. One such filmmaker was Adoor Gopalakrishnan, whose debut feature film Swayamvaram heralded the New Wave in Kerala. Slumdog Millionaire was a massive hit for director Danny Boyle, and it helped put star Dev Patel on the movie map. But Boyle wouldn't direct it today, he has revealed.
It's not because of the quality of the movie, but rather because Boyle feels the job should have gone to an Indian director instead. After all, the film is set in India and is about Indian people. “We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” he told The Guardian while promoting his new film28 Years Later. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”
From there, the conversation became about British colonialism. Asked if he felt the film was a product of that, Boyle answered, “No, no. Well, only in the sense that everything is.

“Reeling,” Yana Alliata’s striking debut, greets us with a single, fluid take that guides Ryan (Ryan Wuestewald) across his family’s O‘ahu estate. The shot’s patient choreography—reminiscent of the long takes in Satyajit Ray’s Charulata or Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s early work—invites us into Ryan’s fractured world as he rediscovers faces and places made strange by haunting gaps in his memory. The luau’s sunlit warmth and rhythmic beat of drums evoke the communal rituals of Bollywood’s colorful crowd scenes, only here they underscore a growing dissonance: laughter and volleyball amid an undercurrent of isolation.
Much like the parallel cinema of India, which privileged human struggle over spectacle, “Reeling” blends scripted drama with improvised moments drawn from Alliata’s real-life friends and family. The result is a palpable authenticity—every roasted pig and whispered greeting feels rooted in genuine emotion. Over a lean 70 minutes,...

Here’s Why Kamal Haasan Didn’t Write Virumaandi Costar Abhirami A Recommendation Letter (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Actress Abhirami, who is making a comeback to the film industry after a hiatus, opened up about her decision to step away from films to pursue academics in the United States. She wanted to study Psychology and Communications and, during the filming of Virumaandi, applied to the College of Wooster in Ohio. According to Mathrubhumi. Abhirami requested superstar Kamal Haasan and director Adoor Gopalakrishnan to provide her recommendation letters for the application.
Believing that recommendation letters would strengthen her application, she approached renowned Malayalam filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, known for his award-winning films. He readily issued her a recommendation letter without hesitation. She then turned to her Virumaandi co-star, Kamal Haasan, for a similar request. However, Kamal Haasan declined, explaining that he believed she had a promising future in the film industry and should not leave it.

M.T. Vasudevan Nair, celebrated Indian screenwriter, director and novelist, died on Dec. 25 at a hospital in Kozhikode after being admitted to a hospital for breathing difficulties. He was 91.
His contributions to Malayalam-language cinema and literature redefined storytelling in the southern Indian state of Kerala where he was born. Nair’s early exposure to traditional folktales and the lush landscapes of his homeland would later inform his distinct narrative style. His cinematic career began in the early 1960s, and he quickly emerged as a master of the screenplay, becoming synonymous with an emerging new wave movement in Malayalam cinema.
Nair’s debut as a screenwriter, “Murappennu” (1965), directed by A. Vincent, set the tone for a career defined by emotionally resonant, character-driven stories. Over the decades, he penned screenplays for over 60 films, including iconic works such as “Nirmalyam” (1973), which won India’s National Film Award for Best Feature Film and marked his directorial debut.

No reasonably intelligent person imagines an artist’s statement about the horrors in Gaza would, in fact, end those horrors, but there are always limits to what one can take and hopes for what one could do. It might even be said that, as observers of the world and human behavior, filmmakers are especially inclined to recoil. When I interviewed Pedro Costa last month he spoke, unprompted, of a situation that’s only grown worse: “It’s very clear that we cannot stand images anymore. I can’t. I can’t. The images of the world for me [Exhales] I can’t. I turn my eyes, and I’m sure you do the same. It’s unbearable.” When I spoke with Anthony Dod Mantle a couple of weeks later it, again, emerged––vis-a-vis The Zone of Interest, whose own cinematographer alluded to it the next day. It’s difficult being a person in the world,...

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 9 (Ians) Saturday morning, it was a rare meeting of two giants when veteran actor Nana Patekar came calling on legendary film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan at the latter’s house.
Soon the discussion between the two veterans centered around the films and Patekar explicitly informed Adoor (as he is popularly known) his concern that not once has Adoor invited him to act in any of his film.

“I wish he invites me in his next film,” said Patekar with folded hands before Adoor.
Adoor reacted by saying he has never made a Hindi film as that’s a foreign language.

FilmsEach era has been witness to new waves in Malayalam cinema. But have themes and storytelling techniques ever been as novel as they are now?Image for representation / Courtesy PxfuelEight years ago, when we were watching Premam in the now-defunct Sri Visakh theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, my mother and my seven-year-old nephew both sat with gloomy faces. The seven-year-old wrapped the end of my shawl around him, choosing to drown his gloom in sleep. In the last decade or so, when movies in Malayalam rolled out in all different hues and forms, many things happened. TributeThe filmmaker, often credited with revolutionising cinema, passed away by assisted death in Switzerland on September 13.CrisJean-Luc Godard / Courtesy - IFFKNo one had expected 90-year-old Jean-Luc Godard to show up on stage in Thiruvananthapuram, when Kerala’s most cherished film festival – International Film Festival of Kerala – was belatedly held in February last year. Godard, a pioneer of the new wave French cinema in the 60s, was declared the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the fest, held two months too late because of Covid-19. But when the big screen at the Nishagandhi Auditorium lit up to show his face, a Cuban cigar in his hands, the crowd sat bewildered. They broke into laughter and applause at his first line: “Ok I will speak with the tongue of the dominators, I will speak in English.” Godard, a beloved of the festival crowd of Kerala, accepted the award, mocked the language...

Kummatty (1979).In May of this year, Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation launched its virtual theater, Restoration Screening Room, with a beautiful digital version of I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, which was followed the next month by Federico Fellini's La Strada (1954). Showing next after these mid-century classics of Western cinema is Kummatty by Aravindan Govindan, a selection in keeping with the foundation's World Cinema Project, which endeavors to preserve and restore neglected films from around the world. Nevertheless, the selection is an unusual choice, as the Indian filmmaker, an avant-garde artist at the vanguard of the Parallel Cinema movement in his native state, is relatively unknown outside of Kerala, let alone the country. Tadao Sato, one of Japan's foremost film scholars and critics, saw Kummatty for the first time in 1982 and stated that he had not seen a more beautiful film.Kummatty’s...

Flix FlashbackIt’s a role of a lifetime for Mammootty, who sheds every ounce of his stardom and popular mannerisms and disappears into Patelar.Neelima MenonYoutube / Potato Eaters CollectiveBaskara Patelar doesn’t smile. He leers. He doesn’t laugh. It’s more an infernal growl. He is a Satan in the starkest sense of the word. In the opening scene we are introduced, without much fanfare, to Patelar—sitting upright on a wooden chair, legs crossed, surrounded by a few yes-men, looking with total derision at a hapless man, in a torn dhoti. It’s his potential slave—Thommi, a Christian immigrant from Kerala. Patelar spits paan and a volley of profanities on his face and nearly guns him down, all in the opening scene. In the background, his cronies are bellowing with laughter. Vidheyan is their story. Directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Vidheyan is the adaptation of Paul Zacharias’ novella Bhaskara Pattelarum Ente Jeevithavum.

For years, Malayalam cinema has been one of the strongest flagbearers of quality cinema coming out of India. The likes of Govindan Aravindan, John Abraham and Adoor Gopalakrishnan, some of the greatest Indian filmmakers of all time, have come out of the state of Kerala. From the same industry, Don Palathara works with a shoestring budget, using atypical filmmaking choices and believing on inventiveness. “1956, Central Travancore”, his latest release, is an example of the results of his creativity. It is one of his two films to have been selected to get shown at the 25th edition of International Film Festival Of Kerala.
