'How to Train Your Dragon' Director Delivers Disappointing News For 'Micronauts' Fans [Exclusive]
Image
Several years ago, toy company Hasbro set out to rule the multiplex with film adaptations of some of its most valuable properties. One of those was the 1970s action figure line Micronauts, which landed animator Dean DeBlois as its director in 2019. However, in the intervening years, the movie failed to materialize. Collider's Steve Weintraub recently spoke about the film's status with DeBlois, who has just made his live-action directorial debut with How To Train Your Dragon. DeBlois revealed that behind-the-scenes turmoil derailed the film, as Hasbro partnered with a variety of production companies.

"Micronauts just got stalled. It got stalled because there's been a changing of hands. So, Hasbro had their own film division; Paramount was involved. They then partnered with E1, and now they're back to having their own film division. So in all of those exchanges, everybody has different ideas of what a Micronauts movie should be.

Comics Interview: Dissected – Issue #17
Image
Welcome to the latest instalment of our Dissected feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and looks back at Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft (Dak).

Lord of The Jungle

I am not going to pretend for an instance to know anything about the life and works of Gaylord Dubois. I do think it is a bold move to feature someone from the Golden Age as the main feature interview when comics and especially superhero comics are such a pinnacle. Dubois has written all of the pulp heroes you can think of; Tarzan, Turok and The Lone Ranger. He began writing Lone Ranger in 1936. This seems like a lifetime ago. It’s pre-wwii! But when you think of it in terms of comics it’s not that far away from Fantastic Four #1 in 1963. Really...

X Most Important Rogue Moments That Defined Marvel's Mutant Villain-Turned-Hero
Image
One of the most fascinating villain-to-hero turns in Marvel history is that of X-Men leader, Rogue. There's a long list of villains turned hero in Marvel history, but it's often forgotten that Rogue emerged in X-Men lore originally as the team's opposition. If anything, that's a good indicator of just how successful Rogue's time as an X-Man has been for the majority of fans to forget her baddie past.

In the time since her villainous debut, Rogue has broken out as one of Marvel's most important superheroes. She's become just as visually iconic as Spider-Man and as powerful as Marvel's finest. She stands tall with Avengers and all-powerful beings without looking out of place and the feats she achieved deserve to be heralded for the masses to celebrate. To properly celebrate one of the most beloved X-Men members, it's best to reflect on the biggest moments of her tenure in the comics.

The MCU Ignored the Most Crucial Part of Captain America's Avengers Leadership (& Now It's Too Late)
Image
While the MCU has pulled from the original comics in many regards, one key aspect of Captain America's leadership of the Avengers has been left out completely. A huge mark of Caps leadership includes the Star-Spangled Avenger using the team to redeem villains and turn them into heroes.

The membership of the Avengers has been in flux since The Avengers #2 by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Paul Reinman, Stan Goldberg, and Artie Simek, when Hulk left the team after their first adventure. The next big shake-up occurred in The Avengers #16 by Kirby, Lee, Dick Ayers, Carl Hubbell, and Simek, in which the entire team (aside from Cap) takes a leave of absence following a harrowing battle with Baron Zemos Masters of Evil.

To take their place, villains Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch try out for the team, becoming the new Avengers line-up by the end of the issue.

John Cassaday, Artist on Joss Whedon’s ‘Astonishing X-Men’ and Co-Creator of ‘Planetary,’ Dies at 52
Image
John Cassaday, the artist who co-created the influential turn-of-the-century comic Planetary and then drew an award-winning X-Men comic written by Joss Whedon for Marvel, has died. He was 52.

His sister Robin Cassaday announced his death Monday on Facebook. She previously wrote that he had been admitted to the intensive care unit of Mount Sinai West in New York on Sept. 3. The cause of death was not revealed.

Cassaday also drew the relaunch of Star Wars that became the best-selling comic of 2015.

“Like [fellow artists] Neal Adams, Jim Steranko or Michael Golden, he is a touchstone, a reference point to the dozens and dozens of artists whose work was influenced by his,” comics writer and editor Mark Waid said. “Most people are lucky if more than a dozen people are still talking about them a month after they pass. My friend John will be talked about and remembered by an entire industry for ages.

John Cassaday, Iconic X-Men & Star Wars Artist, Dies at 52
Image
Iconic comic artist John Cassaday - the unmistakable talent whose art appeared in Planetary, Astonishing X-Men and Star Wars - has died at the age of 52. The creator's passing was confirmed on Facebook by his sister Robin Cassaday, who writes, "My little bro John passed away at 5:51pm Texas time. Please keep me and my mom in your prayers."

Cassaday's unique art is identifiable to comic fans at a glance, and the creator contributed to iconic series including Captain America, Lone Ranger and Hellboy: Weird Tales. Cassaday was a multi-time Eisner Award winner who worked with Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse and more.

Comic creators were quick to pay tribute to Cassaday, acknowledging both his talent as an artist, impact on comics as an art form, and close personal ties. Batman writer Scott Snyder wrote that "the impact of John Cassaday's work on myself and the whole industry is indelible.

Astonishing X-men And Planetary Artist John Cassaday Has Passed Away Aged 52
Image
It's been confirmed today that prolific comic book artist John Cassaday has died aged just 52. Details are scarce as we write this, though we know he was admitted to the ICU at Mount Sinai West Hospital in New York last week.

His sister shared the news of his passing in a Facebook post that read, "My little bro John passed away at 6:51pm Texas time. Please keep me and my mom in your prayers."

Cassaday began his career in the mid-1990s working on Image Comics titles like Gen¹³ and Wetworks. However, we're sure many of you will know him best for his contributions to the Marvel Universe where he redesigned Captain America (with a look that heavily inspired the MCU) and his work alongside Joss Whedon on the critically acclaimed Astonishing X-Men.

The latter series redefined the characters and Cassaday's work was a massive part of that.

"One of the Best Pure Visual Creations in Marvel History": Uncanny X-Men Writer Argues Rogue Is as Visually Iconic as Spider-Man (& She Couldn't Be More Right)
Image
Rogue's appearance is iconic, making her instantly as recognizable as Spider-Man or the Hulk. Rogue's impact on the X-Men franchise and its mainstream popularity can't be understated. With evidence suggesting she deserves a spot among the greatest comic characters of all time, is Rogue the G.O.A.T.?

The X-Men's newest leader, Rogue, may be one of the most deceptively iconic characters of the superhero community. Many people would deem someone an icon based on their impact or longevity in their craft, but presentation can be just as vital to iconography as anything else. An iconic look can go a long way in elevating a character's significance.

On X, Gail Simone - head writer of Marvel's newly relaunched Uncanny X-Men series - posted that Rogue is "one of the best pure visual creations in Marvel history." She expounds that Rogue's appearance is as instantly recognizable as that of Spider-Man or the Incredible Hulk.

10 Best Beavis and Butt-Head Commentaries on the Avengers
Image
Beavis and Butt-Head offer hilarious and absurd commentary on Marvel Comics' Avengers, with no hero safe from their hilarious roasting. Not even Captain America, Hulk, or Thor are safe from the duo's sharp (and often crude) critique in the Beavis and Butt-Head comic series. Despite their clueless and often inappropriate remarks, Beavis and Butt-Head provide a unique and entertaining take on Marvel Comics' iconic superheroes.

This article contains examples of an excessive amount of toilet humor Beavis and Butt-Head are famous for, all of which is told at the expense of some of Marvel Comics' greatest heroes. Reader discretion is advised.

Beavis and Butt-Head are easily the most iconic idiots in pop culture, though they arent without their redeeming qualities, as the two boneheads are not only hysterical in their own weird way, theyre also avid music critics who have offered hilarious commentary on MTV music videos for decades. Captain Marvel's Connection to the X-Men, Explained
Image
Carol Danvers has deep ties to the X-Men, which may not be readily apparent to people unfamiliar with the comics. Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel has historically tangled with Rogue and ended up losing her personality and powers to the mutant. Carol Danvers later regained both her personality and powers and became Binary during the Brood saga.

The following contains spoilers for The Marvels, now playing in theaters.

The X-Men are circling closer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and from the way 2023 has gone, it may not be a moment too soon. The mid-credits sequence to The Marvels features the appearance of Kelsey Grammer's Beast -- and by extension Charles Xavier -- which formally connects 20th Century Fox's mutant franchise to the MCU. They're part of a parallel reality that also involves Monica Rambeau's mother Maria, who possesses superpowers and has apparently taken on the mantle of Binary.

The X-Men Movies Almost Changed Rogue In The Comics
Image
For as long as I've known the X-Men, Rogue has been one of my favorite members of the team. It was her white-streaked hair and charming Southern Belle accent that first caught my notice, but what makes Rogue endure is her tortured soul.

Her untamed powers, to lethally absorb the vitality, memories, and superabilities of other people, prevent her from touching anyone; her first kiss put her boyfriend in a coma. So, she keeps herself closed off, too afraid of hurting others to get close to them — even her true love Gambit/Remy LeBeau. With this intersection of superpowers and characterization, Rogue shows how not all mutant powers are blessings. Due to underserved sex education in the United States, plenty of teens (especially queer ones) can relate to Rogue's fear that intimacy will cause calamity.

Now, most "X-Men" characters have complicated histories and Rogue is no different. Writer Chris Claremont...

Ant-Man 3’s Quantum Realm Can Introduce 1 Strange Marvel Team
Image
New MCU characters will be introduced in the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, who could form one strange superhero team from Marvel Comics. With its release right around the corner, speculation is rising about new characters that will debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The upcoming Marvel Studios project will feature Scott Lang and his team traveling into the Quantum Realm, meeting the inhabitants of the strange minuscule universe, and being pitted against Kang the Conqueror in his most recent MCU appearance after Jonathan Majors previously portrayed He Who Remains in the Loki season 1 finale.

Alongside returning cast members, including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton will be playing Cassie Lang, and several new characters are set to be introduced. Rogue Cosplay Honors Her Darkest Relationship with Chilling Twist
Image
An awesome new Rogue cosplay shoot honors her dark relationship with Mystique in a chilling fashion. Rogue’s family drama, particularly with her adopted mother Mystique, have driven some of her best stories over the years, and now cosplayer prettyoddbee shows off this twisted relationship in a new shoot–one that shows Mystique using her shape-shifting abilities to impersonate her own daughter.

Prettyoddbee unveiled the shoot in an Instragram post, prefacing it by saying, “Like mother, like daughter.” The shoot features prettyoddbee playing both Rogue and Mystique, and using digital editing effects, shows her (as Mystique) morphing into Rogue–perhaps to infiltrate the X-Men’s headquarters, or creep on a meeting of the Quiet Council. Whatever Mystique’s intentions are, they are not good.

Review: Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons
Image
In the 1960s, Mort Weisinger ran more than a few stories speculating on what would happen had Superman and Batman married and had offspring, although no two stories were connected. Under Murray Boltinoff, World’s Finest Comics in 1973 began a series of stories about Clark Kent, Jr, and Bruce Wayne, Jr., which had its following. More recently, Superman and Lois had a son, Jonathan, while Batman met Damian, his biological son, grown in a test tube by Ra’s al Ghul. Once they established themselves, it was inevitable the youngster would be paired up and a series of entertaining Super Sons stories ran, mostly in the capable hands of writer Peter Tomasi.

Now, Warner Animation has paired them in a brand-new animated feature, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons. This is one of the most consistently satisfying offerings from the studio in some time and was fun to watch,...

Pool of London
Image
I’d never heard of this gem of a British production; now it goes on my list of highly recommended titles. A dock area on the Thames is ‘the pool,’ and the sailors that disembark from the cargo ships are susceptible to the temptations of black market trade. A single eventful weekend traces the fates of a half-dozen young people, the women that like the sailors, and the sailor that gets mixed up in a deadly serious crime. Director Basil Dearden’s excellent cast is mostly unfamiliar to us Yanks, but we get really tied up in their problems. This picture should be much better known. It’s the first English movie to depict an interracial romance, and it does so without sensationalism or special pleading. The best new extra is an interview with actor Earl Cameron, who at 103 years of age has his act (and his memories) totally together.

Bane's Plan to Destroy Batman Revealed
Jim Dandy Jun 3, 2019

In this exclusive preview, we start to get a sense of Bane's 72-issue master plan to break the Batman.

Since Tom King's run started way back in 2016, we've had a few dialogue-free (or nearly dialogue-free) issues where the art tells one story and the narration tells another, and the two intertwine to move the plot and the characters forward in King's master plan. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that these are some of the best issues of the entire run. They're certainly some of my favorite Batman comics of all time.

From a plot perspective, these dialogue-less issues are always fairly important. In the first of these, Batman #12, Batman fights his way through Santa Prisca to take on Bane, while the narration reveals that young Bruce contemplated suicide just after his parents' deaths. The wedding issue, Batman #50, was largely silent, telling a retrospective...

Book-a-Day 2018 #235: Star Wars: A Long Time Ago…: Dark Encounters by a whole bunch of people
Today’s story is about reading procrastination, or about good intentions, or maybe just how there’s more things we want to do in the world than there are things we have the time to do.

Fifteen years or so ago, Dark Horse was humming along with its Star Wars comics program — a few things tied to the prequel trilogy, which was about to wrap up, but mostly in the “Extended Universe,” in-continuity stories that stretched across comics and videogames and the novels Bantam and others published. Someone remembered that there was also an old series of Star Wars comics — the ones from Marvel that ran from 1977 through 1986 and were solidly out of continuity by that point — and decided to reprint them.

I guess they were pitched to the Science Fiction Book Club, where I worked at the time. I was the resident Star Wars guy then, reading and acquiring...

The 7 Greatest Comic Series Based on Toy Lines
Marc Buxton Dec 18, 2019

Set your nostalgia rays to the '80s. Some toy lines actually ended up as even better comic book series.

Comic book icons and heroes have been appearing on toy shelves since the days of Captain Action and Mego. But sometimes, toys that win the hearts and minds of kids of all ages are given their own comics, allowing toy fans to see their favorite bits of plastic in action by some of the best writers and artists in comics.

Many toys have graced the pages of comics over the years, including memorable curiosities like Sectaurs, Madballs, Visionaries, Go-Bots, and so many more, but there have been a few properties that have transcended their humble plastic roots to become the stuff of comic book legend.

Here are but a sampling:

The Saga of Crystar: Crystal Warrior

Back in 1983, Marvel published Crystar, a concept they had developed specifically...

Comic Book Bites: Nicolas Cage done with Ghost Rider, Walking Dead gets Zombie King cover, Zombies vs Cheerleaders returns
Nicolas Cage has said he is not interested in making any more Ghost Rider movies.

Mark Steven Johnson's first film in 2007 made $228million globally on a $110million budget and accrued a feeble 26 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Attempting to give it a more gritty style and hold on to the screen rights, Sony brought in directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor for the semi-reboot Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which had a lower budget of $57million but made even less at the box office ($132million) than the first outing and was even less popular with critics (17 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes).

Not surprisingly, Cage says he's finished with the franchise - though he insists Spirit of Vengeance was a success in its own way.

He told MTV: "Personally, I'm done. I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now,...

Comics: Marvel Now! Character Re-Designs For Havok, Rogue, & Scarlet Witch
"In essence, Rick and I wanted to go back to something approximating his original cool Neal Adams design—the black highlight-less bodysuit with the concentric circle power effect. That was always his most distinctive look in my opinion, and nothing he’s worn since that has really been all that memorable. So John took his cues from that design, tweaked it a little bit, pulled that strange antennae-thing he had on his head down onto his cowl, and off we went. I seem to recall that John initially had him with a full belt, and I had to talk him into compromising with the sort of side belt things." "In terms of Rogue’s look, I think everybody involved really liked her original Michael Golden outfit, the one with the hood—so this represents a modernization of that approach to the character. [It’s] really not all that different from the kinds...

Will Sulzberger's Cousin Get the CEO Job at NY Times?
Is Michael Golden the early favorite to become the New York Times’ Company’s next CEO? That’s what one tipster suggested to Jim Romenesko in an e-mail. How does that person know? Employees who once reported straight to former CEO Janet Robinson now appear to report to Golden, cousin of publisher and chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr., on the company's organizational chart. Ever since Robinson announced in December she’d be stepping aside, there has been a great deal of speculation as to who would succeed her. Will it come from within or will they bring...

It’s Women of Wonder Weekend!
In October 2006-2010, five annual Wonder Woman Day events raised over $110,000 for Domestic Violence programs in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. The five-year combination of auctions of over 1,100 original art pieces, plus collectibles, autograph signings, and photo opportunities garnered spectacular turnouts and four Portland Mayoral Proclamations.

This year, the event will take on a new name and an expanded mission! On October 30, 2011, the new Women of Wonder Day — again as a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month — will take place, returning to Excalibur Books in Portland, Oregon, and Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey, as well as at Heroes and Fantasies in San Antonio, Texas.

This year’s contributions for auction include not only artwork featuring heroines from the world of comics — Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Storm, Michonne from The Walking Dead, Leetah from ElfQuest — but also from the world of media as well, including Lisbeth Salander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer,...

Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese Writing ‘Micronauts’ For J.J. Abrams and Paramount
They broke out with [1] Zombieland, penned a sequel to G.I. Joe [2], have a superhero script [3] under their belt as well as a possible directing gig [4] and now Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are going to write about giant toy robots. Deadline reports the duo will write a script for Micronauts, a Hasbro-owned toy brand [5] that blends robots with interchangeable parts. Think Transformers but with Legos or Erector sets. J.J. Abrams has been flirting with producing a film in this world [6] since 2009 and now he'll do just that, with Paramount at his side. Read more about the Micronauts after the jump. In the Deadline [7] story, they mention Micronauts was "one of the Hasbro brands mentioned as a priority movie project in a third quarter earnings conference call done for investors today by Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner." That's the same call that alerted [8] everyone Hasbro wants Michael Bay back to do a fourth Transformers.

Monsters! Giant monsters to be exact. Big bug-eyed monsters in the grand tradition of Jack Kirby and all of the comics we used to know and love. One of the oddest comics you will ever read, Monstrosis follows our favorite hero Doris Danger as she delves deep into the mystery of the giant monsters that seem to be everywhere.

Keven's Convention Wrap-Up: The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2011
Over the weekend of June 17th, Calgary, Alberta hosted what is hailed as the Western Canada Comic-Con; William Shatner, Felicia Day, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Summer Glau, Batman artist/writer Neal Adams and more were on hand for thousands of geeks to drool over and sometimes drool on, in unfortunate cases. This was the very first 'con' that I had ever attended and after wandering the stacked convention floor for four hours and getting lost in a sea of comics and industry greats I still hadn't grasped what the hell was going on. It truly was nerd heaven walking around and seeing great comic writers and artists such as Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), Ethan Nicolle (AxeCop), Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Michael Golden (Micronauts), Stuart Immonen (Marvel's Fear Itself) and Neal Adams (Batman)...

Ashley Scott in Les anges de la nuit (2002)
Marc Andreyko takes on 'Birds of Prey'
Ashley Scott in Les anges de la nuit (2002)
Marc Andreyko has discussed his two-issue story on Birds of Prey. The writer is working on the fill-in for Gail Simone's title with artist Billy Tucci. Starting with issue #14, the story focuses on regular character Lady Blackhawk - aka Zinda Blake - and two guest-stars: the Phantom Lady and her granddaughter Kate 'Manhunter' Spencer. Manhunter was created by Andreyko himself, and the other two characters are original Golden Age heroes. "I've always been a sucker for vintage stories," the writer told Comic Book Resources. "A few years back there was an issue of Birds of Prey with Michael Golden where it was almost the Golden Age Birds of Prey - even though they weren't called that, it was that sort of conceit." He continued: "When asked (more)...

The inhabitants of the comics Twittersphere contemplated some pressing issues today, such as the alarming lack of William Shatner tattoos in the world on the actor's 80th birthday, as well as the "House" writing team's interest in Superman and why people ask really disturbing questions on Formspring.

Additionally, Greg Horn posted one of the best photos of the month on his account when he caught "Star Wars" actor Peter Mayhew together with artist Michael Golden. Have a gander at that and Edgar Wright's thoughts on music in Los Angeles down below.
