Twentieth-century conductor and composer who made many recordings of standard works in the classical repertoire, with several of the top classical artists of the time as soloists.

Father of Alexander Goehr.

Studied with Arnold Schoenberg in Berlin. Moved to Britain to escape the persecution of Jews in Germany. Became music director for EMI in 1937, subsequently taught composition and worked in the British film industry from the mid-1930's.

On occasion used the pseudonym 'Walter George'.
