Subhash K Jha Revisits Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum… Dil De Chuke Sanam
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum… Dil De Chuke SanamHum… Dil De Chuke Sanam. Thereafter, my life as a cineaste underwent a complete change. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying my friend Sanjay has made the best film ever. Or perhaps I Am saying that. And don’t let the “friend” before Sanjay’s name distort the truth. I became friends with the director only after he made Hum Dil what-have-you.

I still remember that morning after the devastating experience. Before Ho-ho-hum-dil-de-chuke-sanam, all I knew about Sanjay was through Khamoshi: The Musical, not to be confused with Khamoshi: The Super-Musical that Asit Sen had made thirty years earlier. I expected to encounter an arrogant, impetuous director completely conscious of his genius as a director. And I was prepared for it. After all, Sanjay was the most romantically enthused and sensitive filmmaker since...

The Mahabharat Over Dadasaheb Phalke
Image
Suddenly two of India’s most celebrated filmmakers are keen on making a bio-pic on the founding father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke.

Raj Kumar Hirani is all set to make the Dadasaheb biopic with Aamir Khan, while down South, the redoubtable S S Rajamouli is prepping to tell the Phalke saga with Ntr Jr. in the eponymous role.

The almost simultaneous timing of the two biopics on a man who was born 155 years ago seems more than a coincidence.

Sources close to the development have some somewhat startling details on the double Dadasaheb aspirations.

According to a source close to the development, Rajamouli was planning his biopic for more than two years. “Then he suddenly hears that Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani are doing it. This came as a shock to Rajamouli, and not a pleasant one. This is not the first time Rajamouli’s ambition was in the...

Subhash K Jha Revisits Aiyaary As It Clocks 7 Years On February 16
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Neeraj Pandey’s political drama Aiyaary as it clocks seven years on February 16th.

Neeraj Pandey is no Costa-Gavras. But for our hard-earned bucks, this filmmaker delivers a forceful message on subterfuge in the defence hierarchy better than any Indian filmmaker. One day, I hope to see him do a film on Bofors and then the Rafel deal to complete his defence trilogy.

At first, Aiyaary seems less seamless than it actually is. Where is all this leading to? You wonder at the outset, as writer-director Neeraj Pandey sets up what eventually turns out to be pieces of a jigsaw that fits perfectly into the mindboggling zigzag of India’s political conditioning in contemporary times.

It is very hard to point out plot points in Aiyaary that stand out to build the compelling construct on corruption in military forces. It seems miraculous that Siddharth Malhotra, playing an army renegade,...

Movie Review | Godavari: Arthouse cinema at its best
Image
Jitendra Joshi, who plays the lead character ‘Nishikant’ in Godavari won the best actor award at Iffi to be the only 4th Indian actor to win this award in the last 60 years! To add to the credibility, Godavari was the only Marathi film among the six films selected in Indian languages by the government for Cannes and the only Indian film at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival.

One of the most silent characters of Godavari – Nashik – has a lot of mythological significance due to its references to stories of Ramayana, birthplace of Hanuman, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kumbh Mela, source of Godavari, etc. However, even in contemporary times, the ancient city of Nashik, on the banks of the river Godavari is seen to be maintaining its traditions going on for years together.

Nikhil Mahajan’s ‘Godavari’ is about a traditional family in old Nashik. Nishikant Deshmukh (Jitendra Joshi...

Arbaaz Khan to play a 60-year-old man in ‘Return Ticket’
Image
Arbaaz Khan plays a 60-year-old man in the upcoming film 'Return Ticket', and he says the experience of essaying such a role should be interesting as well as challenging.

"My character goes through around 25 years of transition in the film. There is a small portion where I play a younger man and then there is a large portion in which I am an older man. I don't think I have played a 60-year-old man in any of my films, so it will be an interesting and challenging character as an actor. I am completely going to surrender to the vision of the director," Arbaaz told Ians.

The film tells the story of a rape victim and her family, who fight against injustice.

"It's an emotional and heart-wrenching story of a woman and her family. She has gone through a really bad incident in life and her family is affected a lot,...

'Airlift' to 'Shakuntala Devi': 6 Bollywood films on south Indian personalities
Image
EntertainmentSome of these films have retained the origins of the character though the language is Hindi while others have completely changed their identity. Tnm StaffThe newly released biopic Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl has opened to good reviews but has also snowballed into a controversy for supposedly distorting facts about the Indian Air Force. More importantly, the film does not show Iaf pilot Sreevidya Rajan from Kerala, who also served in the Kargil war with Gunjan. Sreevidya has, in fact, said that she was the first woman Iaf officer to fly in a combat zone and not Gunjan as the film suggests. Though the makers have said that the film is a fictionalised account, it has drawn sharp criticism for these departures. While Bollywood has made several biopics and films based on real life incidents, the southern industries are slowly catching up with the trend. Perhaps in future, south Indian...

Avrodh: The Siege Within

Starring Amit Sadh, Neeraj Kabi, Vikram Gokhale, Darshan Kumar, Madhurima Tuli, Anant Mahadevan, Pavail Gulati, Mohit Chauhan, Arif Zakaria

Directed by Raj Acharya

Straightaway I must say Vikram Gokhale makes a much better Pm Modi than Viveik Oberoi. A veteran if ever there was one, Gokhale brings a certain gravitas to the wonderfully low-key character, a grace that goes beyond the well trimmed beard and the designer jackets.

Gokhale’s Pm Modi is in a deep turmoil. Should he or shouldn’t he strike back at Pakistan after the attack on the Uri camp base? The series, extending the national-security narrative that was so effectively projected in Aditya Dhar’s feature film Uri two years ago, puts a tight leash on the proceedings from the dastardly attack to the plotting planning and execution of counter-attack, better know as the surgical attack.

Though director Raj Acharya has 9 leisurely episodes at his disposal,...

“Ab Aani CD is quaint but alas insipid” A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Ab Aani CD

Starring Vikram Gokhale, Subodh Bhave, Amitabh Bachchan

Directed by Milind Lele

Amitabh Bachchan as a concept rather than a living reality is nothing new. In the Kannada film Amritdhare Mr Bachchan was cast as a dying woman’s last wish. Nearer home, there is a brilliant short film called Yours Truly, Amitabh in which a retired man (the wonder Kumud Mishra) gets his neglectful family’s attention by claiming he once corresponded with the iconic mega-star.

This kind of metaphorical iconization is unique to Mr Bachchan . His stardom defines acting just as Lata Mangshkar’s vocals define singing. ‘Who do you think you are, Amitabh Bachchan?’ is a classic putdown for someone acting too big for his boots.

In this quaint but alas insipid and eventually uninspired Marathi film , the Big B is ubiquitous in the way, say, in another context Rebecca was in the Daphne du Maurier novel.

Pranaam Movie Review: Critics Review, Rating, Cast and Crew
A peon's son dreams of being an Ias officer, somewhere in heartland India. Twists in fate force him to cross paths with lawlessness. He ends up becoming a gangster.

Now when did you hear that story before? Three decades ago, most likely, when every other film was about the good guy ending up on the bad side of life owing to circumstances.

If "Pranaam" seems like a concept straight out of the eighties, the cast and crew have insisted that was the idea. Rajeev Khandelwal's latest release strives to deliver a dash of the retro punch, hawking a suitably loud package of larger-than-life melodrama and violence. The film is blatant in the way it picks every cliche that you thought had become obsolete a while back.

Heartland socio-politics, ridden with class and caste divide, has not altered much over the decades, you could argue, which still makes this film...

“Aiyaary is a film that must be seen by every Indian” – Subhash K Jha Review
Aiyaary

Starring Manoj Bajpai, Siddharth Malhotra, Naseeruddin Shah, Rakul Preet Singh

Written & Directed by Neeraj Pandey

At first Aiyaary seems less seamless than it actually is. Where is all this leading to? You wonder at the outset, as writer-director Neeraj Pandey sets up what eventually turns out to be pieces of a jigsaw that fits perfectly into the mindboggling zigzag of India’s political conditioning in contemporary times.

It is very hard to point out plot points inAiyaary that stand out to build the compelling construct on corruption in military forces. It seems miraculous that Siddharth Malhotra, playing an army renegade, is allowed to mouth dialogues that openly castigate the corrupt political system. Illegal arms-deal scams are not only whispered into the commodious plot. The narrative screams in wounded agony at the dizzying heights of corruption in the highest places.

This is no mean achievement.

Early in the narrative there...

Veteran actor Vikram Gokhale’s character in Aiyaary is controversial, here’s proof
Neeraj Pandey
After much trepidation, Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary is releasing on February 16 after Akshay Kumar’s Pad Man released this week. There was a controversy surrounding its release that the film release was to get postponed because of the trouble from Indian defence ministry. Well, the trouble is all ironed out now since the film is releasing this Friday. It has Manoj Bajpayee, Sidharth Malhotra in lead roles along with Rakul Preet as female lead.

So now, according to a newspaper report, veteran actor Vikram Gokhale who also is in the movie has a rather controversial role much similar to a real life character. For the uninitiated, the film is about the controversial Adarsh Scam of 2010 which embroiled a lot of high profile bureaucrats and politicians.

Gokhale is seen potraying the character of a Chief of Army, who bears a striking resemblance to a now retired armyman who was embroiled in the housing scam.

Vinay Pathak totally looks the replica of Gour Hari Das, says Ananth Mahadevan
Vinay Pathak is easily known for tickling our funny bones. His happy-go-lucky characters in films like Bheja Fry series, Chalo Dilli, Dasvidaniya, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and others have always delighted us. But now shifting his gears, Vinay will be seen in an altogether different role. He plays a freedom fighter in Ananth Mahadevan directed biopic Gour Hari Dastaan.

Though it's quite surprising to see Vinay in such a role, Ananth feels this is a very significant film for the actor.

Ananth on choosing Vinay for his film, says, "Vinay always stays true to the subject. He is vulnerable and has great sense of humor. He is very intelligent and has strong persona. I wonder why he is not given enough roles. He is trying and performing best.. Vinay is sorted as comic actor but I think there's more to him which is unexplored. My film...

Last he was seen in Varun Dhawan starrer Badlapur, a dark unflinching film, where he portrayed the character (Nawaz's partner in crime) with grey shades.

And now for the first time in his acting career Vinay Pathak will be seen in a biographic film. His next Gour Hari Dastaan - The Freedom File would have him playing a deep and intense character. Besides, he is also playing an 80-year old man for the first time on-screen.

Known for his comic timing and witty-humor roles, Vinay is pushing the envelope to challenge...

Little Lata didn't much care for acting. "I hated it. Even at that young age I knew singing was my forte. Luckily for me and for people who like my singing, I was proven right."

About the double anniversary this month,...
