Trivia

Theo van Gogh

Edit
  • He is the great-great-grandson of Theo van Gogh, brother of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh.
  • A newspaper columnist and longtime advocate for freedom of speech, Theo van Gogh made many enemies on all sides of the political spectrum. On the morning of November 2, 2004, he was shot and stabbed to death on an Amsterdam street by a Muslim extremist. His assassination sparked a national controversy of Muslim immigrants in the Netherlands. Van Gogh's assassin was arrested by police, after a short manhunt and two shoot-outs in the city, in which a police-officer was also wounded.
  • Victim of a shooting, apparently in response to the film Submission: Part I (2004), which was shown on Dutch television in August 2004.
  • Had a son, Liewe.
  • Had received death threats since his controversial film, "Submission", which depicted violence against women in Islamic societies.
  • Was a good friend of the Dutch comedian and actor Hans Teeuwen.
  • Brother of Josien van Gogh.
  • Son of Anneke van Gogh.
  • Shares in common with Pier Paolo Pasolini the fact both were film writers and directors known for their controversial films and both were killed on the same date (November 2nd) but 29 years apart from each other.
