    Moved from his native New Zealand to England after WW2 and once lived on an old Chinese gunboat moored in Fowey Harbour Cornwall until it eventually let in water and sank. During lean times worked in a pie factory, a funeral parlour and ran a pub in Sussex. He retired to New Zealand in the 1990s.
