What Happened to Mad Max?
Image
What is the best Australian movie ever made? Walkabout? Wake in Fright? The Piano? Picnic at Hanging Rock? The Babadook? All worthy contenders, no doubt, but they’re all wrong answers. The only acceptable response regarding the best movie from the Land Down Under is Mad Max, George Miller’s marauding motorist mania that celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024. Never mind the billion-dollar franchise it spawned, the creative ingenuity and low-budget DIY filmmaking of the original remains one of the most impressive cinematic feats on record.

A true independent movie with a rebellious spirit, Mad Max was made in just 12 weeks for a paltry $350,000 yet went on to gross $185 million worldwide. The film introduced the world to Mel Gibson, who would go on to play the badass road-racing Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky twice more en route to becoming a bona fide Hollywood action star. Now, with the law-enforcing...

The Actor Behind Mad Max's Nightrider Barely Knew How To Drive A Car
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

I like to think that I am a pretty good driver. I first got my license over 13 years ago, and in that time, I have never been in a car accident or even been given a speeding ticket. Driving is fun for me. But I've never been the kind of person who has wanted to drive some highly powered sports car really fast down an open highway or go off-road in some behemoth to prove how rugged I am. A nice drive at a reasonable speed. That's good for me.

So I could never work on a "Mad Max" movie. The amount of skill, dexterity, trust in your collaborators, and love of thrills required to succeed in George Miller's high-octane apocalyptic world would be far too much for most people. I know I couldn't deal with the pressure and...

Vincent Gil death: Mad Max’s Nightrider dies aged 83
Image
Mad Max star Vincent Gil has died aged 83.

The Australian actor was best known for playing The Nightrider in the original 1979 film.

Gil’s death was announced in a Facebook post by his co-star Paul Johnstone, who played Cundalini. No cause of death was given.

Sharing a recent photo of the pair embracing, Johnstone wrote: “Sadly, it is true… Vince Gil has left us. He’s been very frail for quite some time and mercifully no longer needs to be constrained by his mortal form.”

He continued: “My fondest memory of Vince will be during our wonderful tour of Japan for MMCon 2015. He was already in less-than-ideal health, and in the opening days a couple of us were concerned about his ability to get through the long demanding days of convention and socialising and travel and convention.

“We need not have been concerned. Vince was remarkable – he rose to the occasion every time,...

Vince Gill Cancels Shows After Wife Amy Grant’s Hospitalization
Image
A bicycle accident that resulted in the hospitalization of singer Amy Grant has led to her husband, Vince Gill, canceling upcoming performances through this weekend.

Grant, scheduled to be feted with Kennedy Center Honors later this year, fell during a bike ride on Wednesday in Nashville. An ambulance transported her a nearby hospital where she was treated for cuts and abrasions. She was listed in stable condition and no major injuries were reported.

The singer is considered one of the most important artists in Contemporary Christian music. Her self-titled album in 1977 was a major release, and her influence grew into a pop music crossover in 1985. Her hits include “Find a Way,” “Baby Baby,” and “Every Heartbeat.”

Gill and Grant wed in May of 2000.

'Mad Max' (1980) Movie Review
Set in the near future, Mad Max portrays a dystopia on the brink of total collapse. Biker gangs do as they please and the "Halls of Justice" are quite literally crumbling. Yet, small pockets of a peaceful society still exist. People still go to restaurants and nightclubs and an attempt at order, of a sort, is maintained by the Main Force Patrol (Mfp), though the line between good and bad is slowly beginning to blur. Working with a tiny budget, director and co-writer George Miller uses the open road as his visual effect, bringing the action as close to the asphalt as we can get. Tires screech and eyes bug out of their head as a story of a society on the verge of being overrun by savages evolves into a story of revenge as the film's title character slowly earns his nickname. With a mixture of chaos, soon-to-be memorable moments of iconography and comedy,...

‘Mad Max’ is the beginning of the end of the world
Mad Max

Written by James McCausland and George Miller

Directed by George Miller

Australia, 1979

Somewhere in Australia are the first signs of the beginning of the end, the end of civilization as most people in the Western understand it, that is. While cities and towns still seem to exist, the institutions that govern them and protect society appear cracked and on the brink of disaster, such as the ‘’Halls of Justice’’ where highway patrol man Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is employed defend the public from the insane biker gangs led by the one they call Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Together with partner Jim ‘’Goose’’ (Steve Bisley), Max is forced to reckon with savagery and brutality on the open road. Although equipped with his powerful Ford Falcon, Max still fears what is to come, or what might happen to him, his wife Jessie (Joanne Samuel) and young son. He represents the law,...

Mad Max – The 1979 Original Screens at The Tivoli Midnights This Weekend
“The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It’d take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you’re lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go!”

So jazzed about Mad Max Fury Road you’re having trouble sleeping? Can’t wait until the 15th? Would a midnight screen of the original Mad Max from 1979 hold you over? Unless you got a pass to this week’s screening of Mmfr, it’s gonna have to! Mad Max will be playing midnights this Friday and Saturday night (may 8th and 9th) at The Tivoli as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ midnight series and I will be there handing out some Mad Max Fury Road schwag (I’m not sure what it is exactly yet but I think it will be T-Shirts and hats)

Réveil dans la terreur (1971)
The dangers of the Australian Outback: Wolf Creek, Snowtown, more
Réveil dans la terreur (1971)
Australia... it's a vast, beautiful, welcoming country. It's also full to bursting with things that can kill you, if the big screen is to be believed. Inspired by Mia Wasikowska's plucky 1,700-mile trek across the Outback in Tracks, we flag up the traps and tropes she should watch out for.

(Un)Natural Phenomena

Exotic wildlife proliferates Down Under, most of it deceptively lethal. Witness the baby stolen by a dingo in horrifying Meryl Streep-starrer A Cry In The Dark (1988). The same – real – tragedy loosely inspired Razorback, a mullet-tastic 1984 horror about a giant marauding pig, directed by Highlander's Russell Mulcahy (mooted tagline: 'There Can Only Be Oink'). The less said about the ballet-dancing were-roos of The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987), the better.

Much more convincing is the giant CG crocodile munching Radha Mitchell's boat tour group (ex-Neighbours actors constitute an Outback peril all of their own) in 2007's Rogue,...

'Mad Max': 25 Things You Didn't Know About the Mel Gibson Classic
"It's that rat circus out there, I'm beginning to enjoy it. Look, any longer out on that road and I'm one of them, a terminal psychotic, except that I've got this bronze badge that says that I'm one of the good guys."

And so we were introduced to the ticking time bomb of fury that is Mel Gibson, at least on screen, in "Mad Max."

Released 35 years ago this week (on April 12, 1979), George Miller's film about a near-future cop who turns vigilante when a biker gang kills his partner and his family, made an international star out of Gibson, made Miller an A-list director, and helped put the new wave of Australian cinema on the world map. It also launched a franchise that continues to this day; next year, Miller will finally release the long-gestating "Mad Max: Fury Road," with Tom Hardy taking over as Max.

The Voice (2011)
'The Voice' Recap: Will Champlin Pulls Ahead
The Voice (2011)
The Voice is like a snow globe this season – it loves to be shaken up. And last night's performance show lived by that philosophy, as the artists and coaches once again focused on making risky choices. While it paid off for some, others – including one-time frontrunners – might find themselves in trouble, especially because it's about that time in the season when "shocking" eliminations start happening.

The biggest blunder of the night came from Matthew Schuler, whose rendition of contemporary classic "Hallelujah" from two weeks ago is still floating around the...

Cma Awards 2013: Blake & Miranda Sweep —Again!
Taylor Swift at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
For the inconceivable fourth-straight year, married couple Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert took home their respective Vocalist of the Year awards at the Cma Awards. Keep reading to find out who else took home an award!

Hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley started country music's biggest awards show with an opening that the nation will be buzzing about in the morning.

The two first addressed feuds in country music by delivering a duet of "Why Can't We Be Friends?" and then decided to lightheartedly start their own outrageous feuds (e.g., Brad Paisley vs. Kenny Rogers; Darius Rucker vs. Julianne Hough).

The well-orchestrated comedy skit continued with a satire of the rocky launch of Obamacare via a spin on George Strait's "Amarillo By Morning" ("Obamacare by morning, over six people served"), and an applause for Taylor Swift for keeping her clothes on unlike her female pop music counterparts.

After a brief sexting session between Paisley and [link...

DVD Review: "The Day After Halloween" (1980) From Scorpion Releasing
By Todd Garbarini

Rarely has distributor exploitation been as blatant as in the case of Simon Wincer’s The Day After Halloween (1980), a ludicrously-named Australian outing originally optioned under the name of Centerfold, then changed to Snapshot after the producers were unable to secure that title, and was eventually released as One More Minute. It appeared on video shelves here in the U.S. on VHS both in 1983 from Catalina Home Video under the title of The Day After Halloween and in 1985 as The Night After Halloween on Magnum Home Entertainment. The film came on the heels of the John Carpenter-scripted Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) which was set against the milieu of the fashion industry. Filmed in 1978 and released in Australia the following year, The Day After Halloween has absolutely nothing to do with John Carpenter’s seminal holiday suspense yarn, and isn’t even a slasher film. It isn’t even a thriller.

Eric Clapton in Rush (1991)
Keith Richards' Surprise Performance
Eric Clapton in Rush (1991)
New York — Eric Clapton's Crossroads festival has become the mecca for riff worshippers, so it was appropriate that guitar deity Keith Richards made a surprise appearance to perform with Clapton.

The Rolling Stone received perhaps the most sustained standing ovation of the night as he joined his old pal toward the end of Crossroads, a two-night concert festival at Madison Square Garden that brought together a dazzling array of guitar masters, from John Mayer to Jeff Beck to legends like Buddy Guy, and of course, Clapton and Richards.

Richards – whose Stones announced another tour earlier this month – flashed his typical wry smile to the crowd before joining Clapton in playing the blues standard and Clapton favorite "Key to the Highway. "

"Now we're gonna rock it up," Richards said before launching into "Sweet Little Rock N' Roller."

Richards' appearance was only the beginning of Clapton's hour-plus-long set, which included hits...

Kevin Corcoran, Tommy Kirk, Dorothy McGuire, and Spike in Fidèle vagabond (1957)
'Nashville' Recap: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Kevin Corcoran, Tommy Kirk, Dorothy McGuire, and Spike in Fidèle vagabond (1957)
Between Rayna's road spats with Juliette, Teddy walking out on her, Avery gloriously failing at life and Liam's general smarminess, Nashville was really on a roll until that last uneventful dud of an episode aired. Luckily, that snooze-fest was merely a hiccup. Nothing like some tabloid controversy, celebrity cameos, a relapse into alcohol addiction and the show's first death to get the drama back into gear on what was Nashville's darkest, heaviest tearjerker to date. And all in an episode that centered on a party? Even better.

"Deacon's a little funny about parties,...

So far, Nashville has shied away from tapping into Music City's vast stable of stars for celebrity cameos, focusing instead on the fictional fame of Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) and Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere). That all changes in this week's episode, which features guest appearances from real Nashville notables Vince Gill, Pam Tillis, Kip Moore, Kate York and the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. They play themselves as guests at a star-studded surprise party that Juliette throws for Deacon (Charles Esten) at the Bluebird.

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
No Country For Kelly Clarkson
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
Los Angeles — There's a reason Kelly Clarkson has performed duets with country superstars like Reba McEntire, Jason Aldean and Vince Gill but never one of her Top 40 colleagues in the 10 years since she became the first "American Idol". They've turned her down – eight times.

"I have, like, 5,000 duets in country music," Clarkson says, flashing a smile. "I don't have one in pop. That's legitimately because everyone turns me down. I'm not even kidding. I've asked sooo many artists to sing with me. Everyone legitimately turns me down! The only one that hasn't was Chris Daughtry."

The sugary sweet pop star who's called Nashville, Tenn., home for the past six years isn't naming names (and much to the dismay of fans, her collaborations with fellow "Idol" alum Daughtry were never released.) While she hasn't exactly been able to hook up with the perfect pop ally, Clarkson has found a partner outside the recording studio.

2012 Cma Awards: Highlights and Winners
It was a hot southern night indeed, as country music's biggest talent gathered for the 46th Annual Country Music Association Awards (TV) in Nashville, Tenn. Three of the top five Male Vocalist of the Year nominees - Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Eric Church - kicked things off by dedicating their hit "The Only Way I Know" to victims of Hurricane Sandy on the east coast. Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley paired up yet again this year as hosts, lending a familiar note to the festivities. Their chemistry worked well as they delivered a cheeky monolog that featured a few "pot shots" at Willie Nelson, some dancing comparisons to Merle Haggard, an enlightening definition of "motorboatin'" and a hair-brained strategy to induce Jennifer Nettles into labor. That's just for starters. Underwood and Paisley have a proven track record as hosts, and as the old adage goes, "If it ain't broke.

Listen: Kelly Clarkson's new song 'Don't Rush' with Vince Gill
Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson and Vince Gill take a trip back to the early ‘80s with “Don’t Rush,” a duet featured on the “American Idol” champ’s “Greatest Hits- Chapter One” set coming Nov. 19. With its soft rock, adult contemporary production and Gill’s tasteful guitar lines, the song sounds like it could be on the charts right beside Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s “Islands in the Stream” or Air Supply’s “All Out Of Love.” There’s even a pause before the key change at the end. It's as different as "Don't You Wanna Stay," her duet with Jason Aldean, could be. [More after the jump...]...

Kelly Clarkson Drops New Country Single!
Kelly's gone country ... again!Kelly Clarkson just dropped her new single "Don't Rush," and it's a departure from her usual pop style. The song features country superstar Vince Gill. Listen below:This is Kelly's second foray into country; she and Jason Aldean recorded the ballad "Don't You Wanna Stay." "Don't Rush" is definitely more uptempo, and even has an '80s easy listening vibe.Still, Kelly's voice shines through."Don't Rush" is one of two new singles on Kelly's "Greatest Hits -- Chapter One" album due out November 19 -- the other being "Catch My Breath." The album also features a slew of the original "American Idol" winner's songs, including "A Moment Like This," "Since U Been Gone," and "My Life Would Suck Without You."If you ask us, Kelly should also release a greatest covers album, including her renditions of Adele, Eminem, Coldplay and fellow "Idol" Carrie Underwood. 'Girls Night Out': Loretta Lynn's 'Coal Miner's Daughter' tribute closes the show
"Girls Night Out: Superstar Women of Country" was a country music lovers dream come true Friday night (April 22) on CBS. So many big names were in the house and the performances were out of sight.

To cap off the already-wonderful concert, honorees Martina McBride, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire and Jennifer Nettles took to the stage to pay tribute to one of the first female country legends - Loretta Lynn.

Loretta couldn't be with them that night due to recent knee surgery, but she taped a video message and then the wonderful ladies joined in a group sing on Loretta's autobiographical 1969 hit "Coal Miner's Daughter." They could not have picked a better closing number.

Other highlights included Rascal Flatts and Reba jamming on "The Heart Won't Lie," Little Big Town and Martina McBride on "When Will I Be Loved," rock legend John Fogarty and Wynonna on "Proud Mary,...

'Girls Night Out': Rascal Flatts, Reba McEntire rock 'The Heart Won't Lie'
Friday night (April 22) CBS broadcast the "Girls Night Out: Superstar Women of Country" that was taped April 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The tribute to the great women of country music had the joint jumpin'.

Kicking of the night was prolific country trio Rascal Flatts, first singing Reba's 1994 hit "Why Haven't I Heard from You," and then having Ms. McEntire herself join them onstage for "The Heart Won't Lie." It was a great way to start the tribute.

Other highlights included Little Big Town and Martina McBride on "When Will I Be Loved," rock legend John Fogarty and Wynonna on "Proud Mary," Miranda Lambert and two newcomers Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley on "Hell on Heels," Carrie Underwood and Vince Gil absolutely slaying "How Great Thou Art" and of course the big finale where all the women honored country legend Loretta Lynn with "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Video below of Rascal Flatts and Reba.

'Girls Night Out': Carrie Underwood's 'How Great Thou Art' brings the house down
CBS broadcast "Girls Night Out: Superstar Women of Country" Friday night (April 22) and the rafters were a'-rockin' at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with the strains of many wonderful country tunes.

But the showstopper was from our girl Carrie Underwood and Vince Gil on "How Great Thou Art." It was emotional, uplifting and just gorgeous. Even if you are not particularly religious, it is an incredibly powerful piece of music and if you are religious, well, goodness ... it was a moving Good Friday performance (despite the show being recorded on April 4).

Other highlights included Rascal Flatts jamming with Reba McEntire on "The Heart Won't Lie,"  Little Big Town and Martina McBride on "When Will I Be Loved," rock legend John Fogarty and Wynonna on "Proud Mary," Miranda Lambert and two newcomers Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley on "Hell on Heels" and of course the big finale where all the...

'Bones': The Mummy Returns
Much as we expected, this short break from "Bones" has erased all memory of She-who-must-not-be-named. Our primary duo are back to doing what they do best: being cute, checking their angst at the door and solving crimes.

Though the crime of the week doesn't get an immediate solution because it's only episode 2 of the potentially multi-season sniper arc.

And while Booth (David Boreanaz), Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Caroline (Patricia Belcher) contend with their new nemesis, Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) try to find a way to tell her father (Zz Top's Billy Gibbons) that he can't name their unborn child. Oh, and Cam (Tamara Taylor) got a haircut.

It's all addressed in our slightly gushy recap...

For the squints:

No cheesy cold open this week. We get the nice dual story of Booth crashing Brennan's jog (cute!) and Broadsky ("The Mummy" star Arnold Vosloo) getting ready for...
