While Tom Hanks is one of cinema's biggest stars, his best film is the one he shaped behind the camera. 20th Century Fox's That Thing You Do! is nearly 30 years old, and the movie has every reason to feel dated considering that it takes place some 60 years ago. But the comedy that Hanks wrote, directed and co-starred in has done the opposite -- like a fine wine, it's even better with age.
That Thing You Do! was no sleeper hit upon its release in 1996. The Los Angeles Times reported that it debuted in third place at the box office, and it received positive reviews from a number of publications. It also earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for the energetic title song, which broke into the Billboard Hot 100. But there are certain things about the film that are particularly appreciated when it's watched again, and viewers recognize that it really is timeless.
