Ridley Scott reveals the plot details and filming window for his untitled Bee Gees biopic. Based on the real-life story of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb and their rise to fame in the disco music era in the mid-to-late 1970s, Scott was in talks with Paramount Studios about the film last year. Due to a budgetary contract dispute with the studio, it was announced earlier this year that Scott's next movie wouldn't be the biopic.
In an interview with Collider, Scott confirms the filming window and shares some details about his upcoming Bee Gees biopic. The director shared that he's expecting to go into production "in November." He added that he didn't think his dispute with Paramount would affect the project in the long term. In terms of the story, Scott explained that the brotherhood is what he's interested in exploring the most. Read his comments below:

Ridley Scott will soon be down with "Night Fever." At CinemaCon in 2024, it was announced that the legendary Gladiator director would be helming a biopic about brothersBarry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb and their groovy rise to disco stardom in the 1970s as the Bee Gees. However, things haven't been so smooth since then, with Scott placing the project on the back burner in favor of The Dog Stars amid a budgetary contract dispute with Paramount that nearly prompted him to walk away altogether. The film appears to be back on track, though, and during a conversation with Collider's Steve Weintraub celebrating the 20th anniversary 4K Ultra HD release of his 2005 classic, Kingdom of Heaven, Scott opened up about when the flick should be dancing into production.

Harrison Ford is one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, but the financiers on Blade Runner clearly weren’t paying attention because they had the unmitigated gall to question Ridley Scott’s choice to cast him in the leading role. Can you imagine questioning Harrison Ford? Or Ridley Scott, for that matter?
“Harrison Ford was not a star,” Scott told GQ. “He had just finished flying the Millennium Falcon in ‘Star Wars.’ I remember my financiers saying, ‘Who the f*** is Harrison Ford?’ And I said, ‘You’re going to find out.’ So Harry became my leading man.” Ford had just finished shooting Raiders of the Lost Ark at the time, and Steven Speilberg gave Scott the thumbs up when the director asked if he should hire the actor for Blade Runner.

Gladiator II helmer Ridley Scott was supposed to be starting work on a movie about the Bee Gees around this time. However, the famous filmmaker has confirmed that he's no longer attached to the project.
Per GQ, Scott addressed what happened with his Bee Gees movie. It was previously reported in 2024 that he was set to direct a film based on the iconic musical group formed in the late 1950s by siblings Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. Reportedly, the project was planned to start production with Ridley at the helm in early 2025. However, as Scott has now shared, he walked away from the biopic after Paramount Pictures "changed the goalposts." He admitted that the deal he was wanting for the film was "expensive," but in his own colorful way, insisted that having him on board would have been worth it.

Ridley Scott is meant to direct a biopic on the music icons the Bee Gees, but he revealed in an interview that he drove a hard bargain with the studio. So while it was previously reported the film would begin shooting early this year, the director now says disco fans will have to wait to put on their dancing shoes.
Scott said in an interview with GQ on Tuesday that Paramount, which released his most recent film “Gladiator II,” later “changed the goalposts” on his deal for the Bee Gees film (working title “You Should Be Dancing”). In turn, Scott instead will begin production on his film “The Dog Stars” for 20th Century Pictures first. “The Dog Stars” will start filming in April, and Scott hinted that the Bee Gees film could begin for Paramount by September.
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott said of the Paramount project.

Ridley Scott was originally slated to follow up Gladiator II with a biopic about the Bee Gees, the iconic musical group formed by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. However, Scott’s next project will instead be The Dog Stars. So, what happened? Turns out there has been some tension with Paramount Pictures, and Scott has been doing this long enough that he doesn’t have time for games, so he walked.
“The deal — the studio changed the goalposts,” Scott told GQ. “I said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did. I was being asked to go too far. And I said, ‘No. Next!’ They didn’t like my deal. So I said, I’ll move on. I’m expensive, but I’m f***ing good.

From a Bee Gees biopic to a new Alien movie to a potential Gladiator III, Ridley Scott has a handful of exciting upcoming movie projects in the works. Scott is known as one of the hardest-working filmmakers in Hollywood. He hardly ever stops to take a break; by the time he finishes one project, the next one is underway. His latest movie, Gladiator II, is a mega-budget historical epic with impressive blockbuster scale. Last year, he released a different mega-budget historical epic, Napoleon. In 2021, he released The Last Duel and House of Gucci within six weeks of each other.
A lot of directors work one project at a time — they focus all their attention on one movie and don’t even start thinking of ideas for another one until it’s in the can — but Scott doesn’t work that way. Scott’s best movies were all produced in quick succession.

Put on your favorite Bee Gees song. What catches your attention first? In the opening moments of “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” or “More Than a Woman,” before the golden harmonies of the brothers Gibb come in, it’s probably the disco backbeat running through the whole song. And you can thank the late Dennis Bryon for that.
Bryon, who died at age 76 on Nov. 14, according to The New York Times, joined the Bee Gees in the early 1970s and stayed in the band through 1980 — a tenure that matches up precisely with their most successful era.

Colin Petersen, the original Bee Gees drummer who played on such classic 1960s tracks as “I Started a Joke,” “To Love Somebody” and “I Just Gotta Get a Message to You,” died Monday. He was 78.
His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his current band Best of The Bee Gees, which reads: “It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin “Smiley” Petersen. He enriched our lives and bound our group with love, care and respect. Not sure how we can go on without his glowing smile and deep friendship. We love you Col. Rest in Peace.” No cause of death was given.
Nicknamed “Smiley,” Petersen was the first official Bee Gees member not named Gibb when he joined brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice in 1966 after all four had moved to London from Australia. After some early visa troubles, he played on...

Ridley Scott is known for dark, iconic films like Alien and Gladiator, but his next project is a departure. After Napoleon and Gladiator 2, Scott will direct a biopic about The Bee Gees, a surprising shift in genre. Despite Scott's dark film legacy, he has experience with biopics, making The Bee Gees project a fitting choice.
Although Ridley Scott stood out in 2023 for his historical action film, Napoleon, and his upcoming sequel, Gladiator 2, the next film on his docket is going to put him in an entirely new light. Ridley Scott is an English filmmaker who is best known for projects like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator. Since the 1970s, Scott has worked on iconic projects that are typically dark, unique, and full of crime or violence. He is a master of science fiction, historical fiction, and stories of the human condition. In this way, his next film will be his biggest departure yet.

Deadline reports that director Ridley Scott is in talks to direct an as-of-now untitled Bee Gees biopic for Paramount. A couple of years ago, Kenneth Branagh was reported to be directing this Bee Gees movie, and way back in 2010, there were rumors that Steven Spielberg might direct it.
According to the report, Scott has long wanted to make a movie with or about the Bee Gees, ever since the band's longtime manager Robert Stigwood worked with Scott on developing a movie with the band's members back in the 1970s. Though the movie fell apart, Scott has a chance now, nearly 50 years later, to tell the story of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The other big reason Scott is being attached to the project is that Paramount executives reportedly loved early footage of Scott's upcoming "Gladiator 2" and wanted to sign the prolific director for his next feature as quickly as possible.

The box office success of Bob Marley: One Love following this week's Valentine's Day release is prompting Paramount to get its long-gestating Bee Gees biopic moving a little more quickly than before. According to Deadline, the studio has now put the script in front of Ridley Scott, and the director is making a deal to tackle it as his next film.
While it's hard to imagine Scott needing anyone's approval for a job, the studio executives were apparently over the moon with the footage from his Gladiator sequel and eager to have him sign on. And for his part, Scott already has a Bee Gees connection, having once been developing a film called Castle Accident with the band's manager to star musical siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb that never came to fruition. But, assuming the biopic deal works out, now he'll get the chance to tell their story.

The legendary Scottish singer Lulu has had a career that’s spanned six decades and is still, as she says, “smashing it onstage.” But she is most associated with a song and a film that she made when she was a teenager: the 1967 Sidney Poitier-starring classic “To Sir, With Love.” The film depicted Poitier as a British Guyanese teacher at a tough East London school and the ensuing racial issues, and featured Lulu not just as a student in his class but also singing the title song to him in a pivotal scene at the end.
Though just 18 at the time, Lulu (real name: Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie) was already a major pop star in Swinging London-era Britain, with a powerhouse voice that got her discovered at the age of 15. This proved to be very useful in answering several questions they had as the filmmaking process went on. “We have different questions we want answered than maybe when they were alive, so some of the stuff that they hadn’t used, those interviews were just new ground for us to cover.”
“The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which available to stream on HBO Max, chronicles the history of the band comprised of three brothers: Barry Gibb along with Maurice and Robin.

When Mark Monroe, the writer of the recent Bee Gees documentary, first started hearing the band when “Saturday Night Fever” came out, he resorted to questionable methods to try and hear some of their earlier music. “I remember I had an older brother who had some Bee Gees albums and I remember trying to pilfer them in the night and listen to them,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video above). But in helping to put this documentary together, Monroe found a lot of areas about the band that he wasn’t as familiar with. “I was not so familiar with the story of their many careers. They have several highs and they kind of transform themselves a couple of times and I was not as familiar with that.”

The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart relied on a huge amount of archival footage, including performances of Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb that span decades. “They run the gamut from film transfers to camcorder stuff,” says supervising sound editor Jonathan Greber. “Most of it pretty bad fidelity, some of it really bad, with noise layers on top of it.”
The goal was to not only restore the archival material but also keep the sound authentic. “What I tried to do is keep it sounding like it really sounds,” he says. “...

In HBO’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, director Frank Marshall follows Barry Gibb — the sole surviving member of the Bee Gees, the immensely popular trio that included his brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb — as he reflects on his family history and their ascent into pop stardom. (The trio’s youngest brother, Andy Gibb, was a best-selling solo artist before his death at age 30 in 1988.) While most might think of the Bee Gees solely as the band behind the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack — emblematic of disco’s most frivolous elements ...
Even Val Kilmer doesn’t consider the movie he produced about his life to be a documentary.
“Val,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this month and begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video Aug. 6, traces his career from his “Top Gun” breakthrough to recent health struggles, incorporating footage from Kilmer’s vast personal archive into the film. His son, Jack, also an actor, supplements his father’s narration, the elder Kilmer’s voice virtually unrecognizable from his heyday as a performer due to treatment for throat cancer.
“Val would say in relation to this film that we are not making a documentary; we’re making a Val Kilmer movie where he’s playing himself as Val Kilmer,” co-director Leo Scott says.
However you classify “Val” — Cannes labeled it a documentary — it is the latest in a series of films self-produced by their star subjects that, to some, raise questions...

Among the things that caught Frank Marshall off guard when he started making a documentary about The Bee Gees was the incredible sense of humor that the brothers had not only with each other, but almost all the time. “You don’t see that in the band on the stage, but when they’re off stage and they’re back there cracking jokes, they’re playing games on each other,” Marshall tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Marshall traces this to the incredibly strong bond that the brothers developed from performing together at such a young age. “They had this dream when they were nine, ten years old, that they wanted to be a band and they had the perseverance and the drive that they had and their parents supported them.”

Oscar nominee Kenneth Branagh has been tapped to direct an upcoming biopic centred on disco legends The Bee Gees. Paramount Pictures' currently untitled Bee Gees movie will be produced by Gk Films, Amblin and Sister, with Bee Gees member Barry Gibb on board as an executive producer.
The biopic is being written by British comedian, author, and playwright Ben Elton, who previously worked alongside Branagh for the 2018 period movie All Is True, which detailed the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. The Bee Gees biopic has long been sat at Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks, before moving to Amblin, and will now be released by Paramount Pictures through Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King, who has teamed up with former DreamWorks exec Stacey Snider and her new production company, Sister.

Kenneth Branagh has been set to direct the untitled Bee Gees biopic movie for Paramount Pictures.
The film got set up in a massive rights package in late 2019 by Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King at Gk and it became the first film project for Sister — the venture launched by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone. Amblin quickly came aboard as producer and financier of 25% of the film.
Barry Gibb, who participated in the touching Frank Marshall-directed HBO documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart about the Gibb siblings, is very involved in the narrative film, and will be executive producer.
Ben Elton is writing the current draft of the screenplay. Among his scripting credits is All Is True, the 2018 pic which Branagh directed and starred as William Shakespeare.

Ahead of his new album Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers Songbook, Vol. 1, due January 8th, Barry Gibb has released another track off the project: a collaboration with Dolly Parton on “Words.” Originally released as a single by the Bee Gees in 1968, the song was written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb.
Parton kicks off this particularly tender version of “Words,” singing the first verse about hoping to start “a brand new story” over plaintive piano. Gibb comes in soon after, and he and Parton take the song to its finish, with...

Frank Marshall, director of HBO Max’s new documentary “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,’ believes one way for Barry Gibb to mend his own broken heart was getting the chance to tell the inside story of the other two Bee Gees, his late younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice Gibb. “You know he obviously misses his brothers immensely, he’s the oldest,” Marshall told TheWrap, adding that the surviving Gibb brother’s participation seemed to be cathartic for the British singer. “He also wants to celebrate the legacy. I think he wants people to know the story. A lot of people think they just did ‘Saturday Night Fever.’ “ Producer Nigel Sinclair agreed, saying the brothers should not be thought of as disco artists only because of the whopping success of the “Saturday Night Fever,” which remains the second largest soundtrack album of all time with...

As the last surviving member of the iconic pop group The Bee Gees, Barry Gibb explained during the new HBO documentary “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” which charts the history of the hit factory behind “Stayin’ Alive,” that he thinks often about his deceased brothers — and still hasn’t fully accepted that they’re gone.
Gibb founded The Bee Gees with his brothers Robin and Maurice in 1958, and they remained the core of the group through their early success in the 1960s through their disco-infused superstardom in the 1970s and beyond. Their youngest brother, Andy, was too young to join the band but he became a musical star and teen idol in his own right in the late 70s and early 80s. Andy unfortunately struggled with drug addiction that eventually killed him in 1988, when he was just 30 years old. Maurice meanwhile died of a heart attack at age...

The Bee Gees created music for nearly five decades, but their legacy is often reduced to a brief period in the late Seventies when they became the most famous disco band on the planet thanks to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Generations of music fans know the Bee Gees — British-born, Australia-based brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb — as the musical act that created the songs for Saturday Night Fever, the 1978 movie that made John Travolta a star and catapulted what was known at the time as “disco” music to the forefront of pop culture.
But not only did the Bee Gees create indelible dance staples like “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “More Than a Woman,” but they had an entire career before Saturday Night Fever, one which was launched in the 1960s and yielded pop classics like “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart,” “To Love Somebody,” “Massachusetts,” “I Started a Joke,” and more, before their gradual turn toward R&b and dance with hits such as “Jive Talkin’” and “Nights on Broadway.”

The Oscar-nominated McCarten most recently scripted the upcoming Netflix film The Two Popes, the Fernando Meirelles-directed drama that stars Anthony Hopkins as Catholic Church Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis. That film will be released November 27.
McCarten has the distinction of having written three recent biopics that resulted in Best Actor trophies for the stars of those films. Bohemian Rhapsody producer Graham King is collaborating with Paramount Pictures and Sister to develop The Bee Gees biopic movie. Even if you don't know the name, you've certainly heard their music, as the musical trio have sold more than 220 million records worldwide to become one of the highest-selling groups in history. The deal comes after Paramount purchased the rights on behalf of King to the Gibb family estate, which will allow them to use actual Bee Gees music for the movie. The upstart producer-financier Sister will also be on board as either a producing partner or co-financier.
Although The Bee Gees first began performing as early as 1958, the group is best known for their unique brand of music from the late '60s and early '70s. For better or for worse, the group has been credited for prolonging the disco era with their music for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

A biopic about legendary pop siblings The Bee Gees is being spearheaded by Paramount Pictures.
The Bee Gees are set for an outbreak of their signature brand of night fever at theaters, with the story of the iconic Aussie sibling pop act set to join the recent genre surge of music biopics in the aftermath of Rami Malek's acclaimed performance as Queen's Freddie Mercury in the hit movie, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Indeed, a yet-to-be-titled biopic project centered on the 220 million-record-selling trio, The Bee Gees, will be brought about by a producer trifecta spearheaded by Paramount Pictures, reports Deadline. Paramount acquired the rights to dramatize the story from the Gibb family estate, chronicling the travails of siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb from their beginnings as a rock act, career nadirs and, ultimately, their reinvention as disco kings, culminating with their culturally-ubiquitous smash hits from the soundtrack of 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.

I hate apologizing on behalf of American Idol. We should be enjoying this! This is our joy! My joy! My Seacrest-sponsored rapture. My karaoke vomitorium pandemonium extravaganza. But sigh. Every once in awhile Idol is a silly suckfest for losers, and tonight was one of those nights. Ten dudes entered, and I'm telling you that at least eight of them were lame enough to dismiss completely. Randy Jackson shrugs wildly and pouts, "What is going on here?!" Besides you and your patronizing chuckles, Randy, not much.
