Romford Film Festival 2025: ‘Ed Kemper’ Review
Image
Stars: Lew Temple, Cassandra Gava, Brinke Stevens, Brandon Kirk, Robert Miano, Susan Priver, Katie Silverman, Elina Madison, Joe Castro | Written by Chad Ferrin, Stephen Johnston | Directed by Chad Ferrin

Chad Ferrin’s Ed Kemper is a masterstroke in the ever-growing canon of true crime cinema—a haunting, mesmerising, and fiercely compelling dive into the mind of one of America’s most notorious serial killers. Ferrin, no stranger to the darker corners of the human psyche, elevates his signature grindhouse grit to a whole new level here. This isn’t just a horror film—it’s a chilling character study with a deeply disturbing heartbeat, and arguably his most nuanced work to date.

Fans of Ferrin’s previous films—Pig Killer, Scalper, and Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep—will immediately recognise his fearless approach to taboo subject matter and his gift for merging horror with unflinching psychological depth. While Pig Killer...

Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter (2017)
‘Ed Kemper’ Exclusive Clip: A Boy’s First Kill
Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, and Jonathan Groff in Mindhunter (2017)
Between May 1972 and April 1973, Ed Kemper—also known as the Co-Ed Killer—slaughtered seven women and one teenage girl. This is after he murdered his grandparents in cold blood as a teenager. He’s been immortalized in media such as the Netflix series Mindhunter, and now director Chad Ferrin is telling a different side to his story in Dread’s latest release, Ed Kemper.

The new film follows the horrifying true story of Ed Kemper, a cunning and sadistic serial killer shaped by childhood abuse. His charming facade masks his grotesque obsession with murder, mutilation, and the ultimate act of revenge against the woman who scarred him most—his mother.

The new film delves not only into Kemper’s crimes, but also into his mother’s own struggles, as well as their antagonistic and abusive relationship.

In our exclusive clip from Ed Kemper, Kemper himself explains to the parole board...

Serial Killer Horror Thriller 'Ed Kemper' Trailer Starring Lew Temple
Image
"All I want... is for you to be proud of me." Dread has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled Ed Kemper, a story about the serial killer named Ed Kemper, Jr. This is set for release in April in a few theaters and on VOD if anyone is interested. The only thing that sells now is true crime and murder mysteries! This is the chilling true story of Ed Kemper, a manipulative serial killer whose charm hid a dark obsession with murder, revenge, and his tormented past. Based on actual events surrounding the American serial killer Edmund Kemper, who murdered his grandparents at age 15 and, after being paroled for that crime, then killed eight women in 1972 and 1973 including his own mother. Scary. Also known as the "Co-ed killer", don't confuse Kemper with Ed Gein (who inspired Hitchcock's Psycho) this is a different guy. Writer...

Johnston returns to familiar territory with Ed Kemper, which he co-wrote with director Chad Ferrin.

The film tells the chilling true story of Edmund Kemper, a manipulative serial killer known as The Co-Ed Killer whose charm hid a dark obsession with murder, revenge, and his tormented past.

You Dont Have Long to Watch Arnold Schwarzeneggers 67% Rotten Tomatoes Fantasy Adventure on Netflix
Image
One 80s movie which shows off Arnold Schwarzenegger's incredible physique as the seven-time Mr. Olympia winner just got a devastating streaming update. Netflix has officially announced that Conan the Barbarian, the 1982 fantasy action adventure flick which Schwarzenegger stars in alongside James Earl Jones and Sandahl Bergman, will leave the platform at the end of this month with no new streaming home in sight. The film follows a powerful warrior, Conan (Schwarzenegger), who seeks to avenge the genocide of his people and the murder of his parents at the hands of a snake cult. 'I Will Never Forget Him': Arnold Schwarzenegger Honors Conan the Barbarian Co-Star James Earl Jones
Image
Arnold Schwarzenegger has commented on the passing of James Earl Jones. Both actors memorably appeared together in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian.

On the social media platform X, Schwarzenegger shared a message of tribute in honor of Jones. The message was posted the day after it was announced that Jones had died at the age of 93. Like many other Hollywood stars in mourning, Schwarzenegger addressed the impact Jones had on the industry. Beyond his incredible work as an actor, Schwarzenegger also touted how wonderful Jones was as a human being as well.

The Best Movies with the Strongest Dark Lords
Image
Villains have historically been an integral part of fiction, with so-called dark lords standing out as one of the best tropes for establishing a foe. These representations of evil typically have various powers, from a mastery of magic to being born of Hell itself. One of the best aspects of this type of villain is how they can represent evil itself, and present viewers with an undeniably evil figure who must be defeated.

Dark lords are one of the strongest ways of writing a fun, alluring villain, characters often written with high power levels, charisma, and intelligence. Indeed, some of these foes are as synonymous with their films as the heroes themselves and are often remembered for their love of evil. The archetype may not be as morally complex as some key villains of cinema, but it remains popular for good reason.

Just a couple weeks after Squealer made its way out into the world, another serial killer thriller inspired by the Pickton case has arrived in theatres, and you can watch the trailer for this one, which is called Pig Killer, in the embed above.

The Amityville IP: 1990 Canuxploitation Sequel ‘The Amityville Curse’ Is Watchable, But Forgettable
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

Less than a year after the possessed lamp made its debut, Canada delivers the fifth entry in the Amityville franchise…and the result is a little ho-hum.

I’m still unsure at what point I need to start grading on a new curve, but now that the films have moved entirely into the realm of made-for-tv, there’s a noticeable shift in quality. While The Evil Escapes suffered from over-lit scenes but at least attempted to connect its narrative back to the original house, The Amityville Curse is the first film to basically retain the name and mostly jettison the rest.

I say “mostly” because there is an offhand remark in a scene set at Daughery’s, the local tavern, when a...

How to Watch Mindcage Starring John Malkovich and Martin Lawrence
Image
Crime thrillers have reached new heights in the last decade, making the same sort of innovations as elevated horror. Movies like Gone Girl and Knives Out have raised the bar with deeper themes and more theatrical cinematic experiences. With the increasing popularity of true-crime shows and society's interest in the psychological exploration of serial killers, it's no wonder the genre has taken to venturing in those directions as well. Mindcage, however, looks to have taken a more classic approach. The new crime mystery, starring Martin Lawrence, Melissa Roxburgh, and John Malkovich, utilizes a very Silence of the Lambs formula, where the detectives seek aid from a convicted serial killer in trying to find a copycat. Directed by Mauro Borrelli (The Recall), Mindcage fills a very special place in the hearts of crime genre fans. The film also stars Robert Knepper, Neb Chupin, Jacob Grodnik, Chris Mullinax, Ritchie Montgomery, Nellie Scuitto,...

‘Mindcage’ (2022) – Thriller with John Malkovich and Martin Lawrence – Review: A Good Old Thriller
John Malkovich, Martin Lawrence, and Melissa Roxburgh in Mindcage (2022)
Mindcage is a thriller movie starring John Malkovich and Martin Lawrence. It is directed by Mauro Borrelli.

Are you in the mood for a movie with in line with ‘Knight Moves’ (1992), ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)or ‘Se7en’ (1995)? ‘Mindcage’ offers you the perfect opportunity to relive the 90’s-style “charming” thrillers about psychopaths that leave a trail of corpses and intricate clues, which they themselves consider an art form (in this occasion religious art).

Premise

A copycat murderer is on the loose, and detectives Jake Doyle and Mary Kelly are put on the case. This will invariably mean that must seek help from an incarcerated serial killer called “the Artist”. As Mary delves deep into the Artist’s brilliant but twisted psyche, she and Jake get lured into a diabolical game of cat and mouse, racing against time to stay one step ahead of both criminals.
