Jason Bloom's 1996 comedy "Bio-Dome" was mocked even when it came out. It was a slacker flick starring the ultra-hot comedian Pauly Shore as Bud "Squirrel" Macintosh and a particularly loopy Stephen Baldwin as his best friend, Doyle "Stubs" Johnson. The two slackers have just been (wisely) dumped by their hippie, environmentally conscious girlfriends (played by Teresa Hill and Joey Lauren Adams) and have decided to while away their free time at a local mall. It turns out the "mall" they have spotted, though, is actually an experimental, self-contained bio-dome that is on the cusp of sealing in a team of scientists for an entire year. The bio-dome is meant to test potential long-term extraterrestrial living. So, because of the experiment, Squirrel and Stubs have to stay sealed in for a year.

Anyone who remembers "Bio-Dome" probably also recalls how awful it is. It wasn't a hit and it received pretty terrible notices.

By 1994, they had written one (1) song together, and performed live for the first time. As the lore goes, they hadn't settled on a band name yet, and put out a few choices to the audience. Their choices were the simple Pets or Meat, the silly Balboa's Biblical Theater, or Gass' favorite, The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief. Eventually, though, the pair sort of insisted the audience choose Tenacious D, a term they got from a local basketball announcer (as in: tenacious defense).

It follows Astor Grey, a rising singer-songwriter whose life takes a dark turn when she enters a turbulent romance with washed-up rock star Brandyn Verge. What begins as a whirlwind love story becomes a darker look at manipulation and resilience. The ensemble also includes Rebecca De Mornay, Olivia Sui, Julia Campbell, and Will Peltz. There are also cameos by Billy Gibbons (Zz Top), Peyton Manning, and Edgerrin James.

The upcoming live-action Minecraft film doesn’t arrive until April, but the first preview of its soundtrack arrived this week with the original song “I Feel Alive.” A Minecraft Movie cast member Jack Black takes the lead vocals, with drums provided by none other than Dave Grohl.

The ’80s-inspired rock song was written by Black alongside veteran songwriters and producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who’ve crafted the soundtracks to films like Barbie, A Star Is Born, and more (Wyatt is also the lead vocalist of the indie band Miike Snow). Fellow cast member Danielle Brooks also lends vocals, while the guitar is courtesy of longtime Queens of the Stone Age member Troy Van Leeuwen.

Discussing the upcoming video game adaptation with Variety, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s senior director of original content, revealed more details about how Jack Black ended up playing Steve, one of the original “skins” introduced when the game first emerged. While it was expected to reach greater heights financially with Carrey in the lead, the film was still profitable at the box office, earning over $102 million against a budget of $47 million — $20 million of which reportedly went straight into Carrey's pocket. Its reception was also divisive, garnering mixed reviews and respective critics and audiences scores of 55% and 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With the holiday season in full swing, people are watching their favorite Christmas classics, like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, Die Hard, and others. It's hard to definitively categorize sci-fi into an individual box. Unlike other genres, there is never a singular concept that sci-fi focuses on. Rather, it imagines scenarios in which humanity is unbounded from limits on technological innovation and advancement. Thus, the possibilities are virtually endless. In these movies, dystopian futures are a reality, the universe is explored to its greatest ends, and extraterrestrial life is prominent. Even with unlimited potential, it seems like the most famous sci-fi works typically implement a pessimistic perspective.

For example, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner franchise, which will continue in 2025 with the series Blade Runner 2099, takes on the concept of hyper-advanced AI but does so in a bleak, depressing tone. Meeting other life forms has some positive implications, but the genre always assumes the worst. Several upcoming Alien movies will surely reinforce this trend, and offer a continuation in the story of the vicious Xenomorphs.

Gass was presented a birthday cake by bandmate Jack Black at a Sydney, Australia concert on July 14. Asked to make a wish, Gass said, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Gass later apologized on Instagram.

“I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone,” he wrote in his message. “What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”

The remainder of the Tenacious D tour was canceled as backlash mounted for the remark.

Black said he was “blindsided” by his bandmate’s comment.

“I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” the “School of Rock” star said in a statement.
