Jason Bloom's 1996 comedy "Bio-Dome" was mocked even when it came out. It was a slacker flick starring the ultra-hot comedian Pauly Shore as Bud "Squirrel" Macintosh and a particularly loopy Stephen Baldwin as his best friend, Doyle "Stubs" Johnson. The two slackers have just been (wisely) dumped by their hippie, environmentally conscious girlfriends (played by Teresa Hill and Joey Lauren Adams) and have decided to while away their free time at a local mall. It turns out the "mall" they have spotted, though, is actually an experimental, self-contained bio-dome that is on the cusp of sealing in a team of scientists for an entire year. The bio-dome is meant to test potential long-term extraterrestrial living. So, because of the experiment, Squirrel and Stubs have to stay sealed in for a year.
Anyone who remembers "Bio-Dome" probably also recalls how awful it is. It wasn't a hit and it received pretty terrible notices.

Whether he's portraying beloved video game characters in some of the biggest blockbusters of the 2020s so far or appearing in bolder comedies that range from the box office hit "Tropic Thunder" to the overlooked dark comedy "Bernie," Jack Black stands out as a unique Hollywood star. With a career that dates back to the early 1980s, Black has been involved in numerous projects that showcase his signature charm. However, perhaps the most impressive aspect of his long career is through music -- in particular, his collaboration with fellow musician/comedian Kyle Gass with their band, Tenacious D.
Black has showcased his musicianship through many of his films, with his Golden Globe-nominated turn in Richard Linklater's "School of Rock" serving as a crown jewel of his career. Black has also exhibited his musicianship in more surprising ways, particularly in his two roles in the blockbuster video game films, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

It is safe to say that Jack Black is one of the most unique movie stars of the 21st century. Having appeared in films as early as the 1990s, as well as establishing himself as a comedic rock icon alongside Kyle Gass with their band Tenacious D, Black's rise to superstardom is particularly notable through his roles in family films. Whether it is through his voice work in animated films such as "Shark Tale, "Kung Fu Panda," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," or in live-action fair such as "Nacho Libre," "Goosebumps," the "Jumanji" films, and most recently, "A Minecraft Movie," Black has left his mark on the family film genre.
Along with his extensive work within family films, Jack Black remains a beloved comedic actor thanks to his roles in more mature material. "High Fidelity" served as a wonderful cinematic breakthrough for him, whereas his roles in "Shallow Hal,...

On ABC's 1980s action series "The Fall Guy," Lee Majors played Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who, as a side-hustle, worked as a freelance bounty hunter. His experiences with stunt driving made him well-suited to track down bad guys, and his constant exposure to danger gave him an appealing devil-may-care attitude. He was often aided by fellow stunt performers Kid (Douglas Barr) and Jody (Heather Thomas). Majors himself sang the theme song. The "Fall Guy" IP was eventually revived decades later when director David Leitch adapted the premise into a big screen Hollywood blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling. The 2024 "Fall Guy" movie was spectacular, by the way.
In the "The Fall Guy" episode "Old Heroes Never Die", Colt becomes embroiled in criminal malfeasance with an old baseball star named Ron Perkins (Paul Winfield). Perkins was once a star player but has since fallen on hard times and is now $50,000 in debt...

What makes someone own up and stick by their failure even after decades with no shame or regret? For Jack Black, the answer doesn’t lie in box office numbers or critical acclaim, but passion and creativity.
No one can make you feel bad about the kind of project that’s a part of your soul and not just a line on your resume. So let’s see which is that messy and hilarious movie that critics and audiences hated equally, but Black still adores?

Jack Black and Kyle Gass first met in the mid-1980s, when the two young men were performing with the Actors' Gang, a performance troupe from Culver City, California. They bonded over their mutual taste in music, and the pair would end up spending a lot of time together at Gass' apartment, where Gass would teach Black how to play the guitar. By 1994, they had written one (1) song together, and performed live for the first time. As the lore goes, they hadn't settled on a band name yet, and put out a few choices to the audience. Their choices were the simple Pets or Meat, the silly Balboa's Biblical Theater, or Gass' favorite, The Axe Lords Featuring Gorgazon's Mischief. Eventually, though, the pair sort of insisted the audience choose Tenacious D, a term they got from a local basketball announcer (as in: tenacious defense).

Think about this question long and hard: What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to achieve greatness? As our society descends into a neverending cycle of narcissism and self-promotion thanks to the reign of social media, it feels like the majority of people wouldn't think twice about sacrificing their dignity, thoughts, or time to achieve fame and/or fortune. Yet greatness is something more than mere popularity or notoriety; it also involves a sincere desire to master the craft. One of the most frustrating things about achieving greatness is that talent and hard work are only half the battle, because you need a lot of luck, too. If some supernatural force approached you and made you a deal where your greatness could be guaranteed in exchange for your soul, would you take the deal, or find yourself battling the temptation toward darkness within and without you?...

Quiver Distribution is about to introduce a little extra romance and drama into the music industry with its upcoming film Off the Record. Releasing on demand and digital in less than a month, the debut feature from stuntwoman-turned-filmmaker Kirsten Foe stars Mad Men alum Rainey Qualley as rising star singer-songwriter Astor Grey, whose life and career are rocked to their core amid her whirlwind romance with rock's washed-up bad boy Brandyn Verge, played by Veronica Mars veteran and recent Night Court recurring star Ryan Hansen. We're excited to feature Foe's first feature film as part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for upcoming summer movies and share an exclusive image highlighting Astor's journey.

The upcoming live-action Minecraft film doesn’t arrive until April, but the first preview of its soundtrack arrived this week with the original song “I Feel Alive.” A Minecraft Movie cast member Jack Black takes the lead vocals, with drums provided by none other than Dave Grohl.

The reaction from fans to the casting of Jack Black as major Minecraft player, Steve, have been somewhat mixed (even more so since the School of Rock star tragically turned his back on fellow Tenacious D member and long-time friend Kyle Gass recently), with many left wondering if he would have been better suited as a different character. Well, that was indeed almost the case, as A Minecraft Movie initially had Black playing a “talking pig.”
Discussing the upcoming video game adaptation with Variety, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Mojang’s senior director of original content, revealed more details about how Jack Black ended up playing Steve, one of the original “skins” introduced when the game first emerged. Director Jared Hess, who had worked with Black before on the 2006 comedy Nacho Libre, was eager to reunite with the actor, and while his casting as Steve has been divisive among fans (he looks.

An unfairly criticized Jim Carrey movie has gotten a new streaming home. As of Jan. 1, The Cable Guy is now available to stream on Max.
Released in 1996, The Cable Guy was directed by Ben Stiller and written by Lou Holtz Jr. The movie features Sonic the Hedgehog 3 star Jim Carrey as a cable TV installer who aggressively befriends a customer played by Matthew Broderick. While it was expected to reach greater heights financially with Carrey in the lead, the film was still profitable at the box office, earning over $102 million against a budget of $47 million — $20 million of which reportedly went straight into Carrey's pocket. Its reception was also divisive, garnering mixed reviews and respective critics and audiences scores of 55% and 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Actor Will Ferrell returns as one of his most beloved characters, Buddy the Elf, but sadly it’s not in a sequel. Instead, the Barbie star took the Christmas icon out into the real world, slipping into his yellow and green elf outfit while attending the LA Kings ice hockey game over the weekend. While fans will no doubt have sighed with disappointment that the return of Buddy is not in Elf 2, it will surely please everyone to see the elf looking grumpy, disheveled, and with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Which is not exactly how we imagined the cheerful elf after all these years.
It has now been more than 20 years since director Jon Favreau and writer David Berenbaum gave audiences a modern Christmas classic with Elf. Led by Will Ferrell alongside the likes of James Caan, Zooey Deschanel, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Asner and Bob Newhart, Elf tells the story of Buddy,...

With the holiday season in full swing, people are watching their favorite Christmas classics, like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, Die Hard, and others. A more recent classic is Elf, the unexpected 2003 hit film starring Will Ferrell and directed by Jon Favreau. It's a highly quotable movie and full of fun and memorable scenes. One was supposed to be a quick, one-liner moment that ended up becoming a fan favorite. But Favreau had to fight to keep the scene in after the producers wanted to cut it.
The scene in question is when Buddy Elf (Ferrell) is sent to the mailroom by his biological father, Walter (played memorably by James Caan) to essentially get out of the way. While there, Buddy meets the way-older-than-he-looks "Mailroom Guy," played by character actor Mark Acheson. It's hard to definitively categorize sci-fi into an individual box. Unlike other genres, there is never a singular concept that sci-fi focuses on. Rather, it imagines scenarios in which humanity is unbounded from limits on technological innovation and advancement. Thus, the possibilities are virtually endless. In these movies, dystopian futures are a reality, the universe is explored to its greatest ends, and extraterrestrial life is prominent. Even with unlimited potential, it seems like the most famous sci-fi works typically implement a pessimistic perspective.
For example, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner franchise, which will continue in 2025 with the series Blade Runner 2099, takes on the concept of hyper-advanced AI but does so in a bleak, depressing tone. Meeting other life forms has some positive implications, but the genre always assumes the worst. Several upcoming Alien movies will surely reinforce this trend, and offer a continuation in the story of the vicious Xenomorphs.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Paramount+'s Dear Santa movie.Ben Stiller's surprise appearance in Dear Santa is one of the movie's best moments, and although it works well in isolation, Stiller's presence also serves as a clever nod to another Jack Black project from over two decades ago. Stiller's Dear Santa casting places him in his second 2024 Christmas movie - with the other being Hulu's Nutcrackers. So, the holidays this year mark an acting resurgence for Ben Stiller after focusing far more on behind-the-scenes roles in recent years.
Although he doesn't appear until near the end of Dear Santa, Stiller has a surpisingly large impact on the plot. Fans who follow Jack Black's career outside the movie industry will get a little more out of Stiller's role in the Dear Santa cast than those who only know Black as an actor. The pair have a long-standing relationship that isn't limited to feature-length productions,...

More than 20 years after it was released in theaters, Elf (2003) is still bringing joy to kids of all ages every holiday season. “Buddy the Elf” himself Will Ferrell told People recently that he was “so lucky” to have made the Jon Favreau-directed film and that it will always remain close to his heart.
“It’s really quite special,” said Ferrell, a six-time Emmy Award winner for his iconic Christmas film that also starred Zooey Deschanel, Bob Newhart, James Caan, Ed Asner, Amy Sedaris, Peter Dinklage, Kyle Gass, and Andy Richter. “I mean, it continues to grow by leaps and bounds, and it continues to entrench itself as a kind of holiday classic for people. I’m so lucky to have a movie like that in my catalog,” Ferrell added.

Music can be funny sometimes because songs can be about anything - including other songs. Some songs can serve as a source of inspiration for other songs, and much of that influence is expressed in the record itself (whether that influence is positive or negative). Sometimes, the songs at the center of one song may not even exist, which is a whole other strange phenomenon in itself.
At the end of the day, musical artists and songwriters are storytellers and thus might make up a song at the center of the one they are playing to tell a story. It's somehow even more meta than a song referencing a song that actually exists. In either case, such a meta scenario has opened the door some of the best songs in music history. Here are just a few examples of such great songs that are about other songs, existing or otherwise.

Jack Black's efforts to get a particular song into School of Rock helped solidify its soundtrack as one of the best ever made. In the film, Black plays Dewey Finn, a struggling musician who takes a job as a substitute teacher and turns the school's band into a rock band. School of Rock has a lasting legacy and is an unexpectedly heartwarming story, as the children grow in confidence. The movie has held up so well that Jack Black wants to make School of Rock 2, which would certainly feature a rock soundtrack.
Jack Black is also a musician, so he understands why many bands want to have some control over where their songs are used. One of the greatest rock bands of all time, Led Zeppelin, is famously picky over where their songs are played, and Black went to great lengths to persuade Led Zeppelin to let him use...

Tenacious D's career took an unexpected turn in 2024 following a highly publicized incident during an Australian tour, which resulted in a public statement from Jack Black. The duo, known for their comedic rock style and often politically charged lyrics, found themselves at the center of a media storm that forced them to postpone their tour and future projects indefinitely.
The band is best known for the musical comedy film The Pick of Destiny (2006), released just a few years after the huge success of Jack Blacks role in School of Rock. This comedic persona propelled his Hollywood movie career, including the upcoming Jack Black Christmas movie Dear Santa. This year, Black voiced Claptrap in Borderlands, further highlighting his broad appeal. Jack Blacks upcoming 2024 movie is the Christmas film Dear Santa, through which hes paying off an unholy obsession that started with his project Tenacious D. With his comedic style and sense of humor, Jack Black has become one of the most beloved comedians and actors of his generation. Blacks filmography has covered a bit of everything, including rom-coms like The Holiday and even slashers with I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but hes best known (and praised) for his comedy projects.
In 1994, Black took his comedic skills to another level with the band Tenacious D, which he formed with fellow actor and comedian Kyle Gass. The comedy rock duo has found great success with its unique style and how it has branched out to other media. Ryan Murphy's "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story" debuted on Netflix on September 19, 2024. The series recounts the details of the Menéndez brothers' murder of their parents, José and Kitty, in 1989. Those alive and watching the news at the time recall what a blazingly salacious affair their trial was. Beginning in 1993, CourtTV broadcasted extended portions of the time the brothers spent in court (they were tried separately), and the details began to sound like a daytime soap opera. The brothers said that José Menéndez was sexually abusing Erik, and that he threatened to kill them both if they told the cops. Kitty never stood up to him, so the brothers felt no other recourse but to kill them with a shotgun in preemptive self-defense. After the murders, but prior to the arrest, the brother had rather suspiciously begun living richly on their sizable inheritance.

Minecraft is the latest addition to the list of Jack Black video game movies, and his history with the genre traces back to a failed Tenacious D animated series. Award-winning comedy actor and musician Jack Black is beloved by audiences and has established himself as a reliable and multi-talented performer, but with a current streak of roles in video game movies, Black has also made a major splash in the gaming community. His vocal performance as Bowser in the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros Movie was a viral sensation that led to the adaptation's $1 billion box office domination and award-winning run.

Gina Carano has recently been in the media spotlight not for her acting career but due to her ongoing dispute with her former employer, Disney. Carano, who previously starred as Cara Dune on the hit show The Mandalorian and was rumored to have a spinoff in the works, saw her career take a turn when she made offensive comparisons between Covid-19 measures and the Holocaust on social media.
Her issues with Disney were further compounded when she refused to include pronouns in her X (formerly Twitter) bio, claiming she was subjected to a “re-education camp.” Consequently, her contract was not renewed.
After losing her role on The Mandalorian and a potential spinoff, Gina Carano decided to sue Disney, seeking damages or reinstatement. She claims she was fired due to her political views, which she argues constitutes discrimination. Elon Musk is financing the lawsuit, and Carano recently achieved a small but...

The first official trailer for the "Minecraft" movie is here. The new film is based on the wildly popular, visually retro open-world building video game of the same name, and we're hoping it'll be a little less "Super Mario Bros Movie" and a little more "Lego Batman Movie" or "Barbie." So far, there have been promising signs; the film's cast features a variety of in-demand actors, from "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa to "The White Lotus" headliner Jennifer Coolidge to "The Color Purple" standout Danielle Brooks.
Jack Black stars in the film, and though I have no doubt he'll bring the same energy and amazing comedic intensity to the role as he does to everything else he's been in, it's worth noting that the actor is less beloved than usual lately thanks to his choice to temporarily break up Tenacious D over a comment Kyle Gass made. More than two decades after its theatrical run, the most controversial film from both Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow will be free to watch on streaming. Released in 2001, Shallow Hal is heading to the free streaming platform Tubi on Sept. 1.
Directed by the Farrelly brothers, Shallow Hal is a film that was controversial from the start, drawing some criticism for its plot perceived by many to be offensive. After 23 years, some would say that the same film could not be greenlit by a Hollywood studio, given its controversial nature. However, despite the controversy, which resulted in mixed reviews from critics, Shallow Hal was a hit film, earning more than $141 million worldwide against a $40 million budget. Shallow Hal was an even bigger hit on home video, topping the rental charts when it was released on VHS and DVD. Black and Paltrow were also both nominated for Teen Choice Awards, as was the movie itself.

Jack Black opened up about the return of Tenacious D after the band abruptly canceled their tour amid backlash.
The band cut their tour short after guitarist Kyle Gass said, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” after the assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate.
Black is now addressing if the band will get back together after their break.
“I love Tenacious D… We had to take a break, but I love the D. Everybody takes a break sometimes,” the Nacho Libre star told Entertainment Tonight. “We’ll be back.”
Amid the backlash, Gass apologized for his remarks in a since-deleted post on Instagram.
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” Gass said at the time. “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement.

Among Dave Grohl’s many contributions to popular music, easily in the top five is essential work with Tenacious D on their 2001 classic, “Tribute.” Grohl not only played rhythm guitar and drums on the studio version of the track, but he also popped up in the video, too, as the demon who challenges Jack Black and Kyle Gass to play the best song in the world, lest he eat their souls.

It’s 1970, and as the astronauts of Apollo 13 ventured around the dark side of the moon, they faced a life-threatening crisis. Who helped save the day? Judith Love Cohen. Judith had helped create the Abort Guidance System that would ultimately rescue those astronauts.
But wait, it gets better. Judith was still working on a problem for the Apollo program, the day she gave birth to a son. She took a printout to the hospital, called her boss to say she’d finished it, and then casually gave birth to the future star of School of Rock, Po himself, the man who brought Bernie Tiede to the silver screen, the one-and-only Jack Black. Talk about multitasking!
Now, with a mom like that, you’d think Jack would be all about the math and science, right? Well, not exactly. Jack was a kid who was not great at academics, but had a knack for making people laugh.

As long as it’s not for some heinous offense, Dane Cook is just fine if you want to cancel him. “Canceling is good for business, as long as you’re not being canceled for something that is truly like, bad, in a legal sense,” the comedian told Distractify.

Hard to argue with Cook there. Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais and Louis C.K., to name a few of the most criticized comics of the past decade, continue to sell out large venues. The remainder of the Tenacious D tour was canceled as backlash mounted for the remark.
Black said he was “blindsided” by his bandmate’s comment.
“I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” the “School of Rock” star said in a statement.
Gass was presented a birthday cake by bandmate Jack Black at a Sydney, Australia concert on July 14. Asked to make a wish, Gass said, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass has removed an Instagram post apologizing for a joke he made about Donald Trump’s attempted assassination.
The apology was posted in the immediate aftermath of Tenacious D’s concert in Sydney, Australia last weekend, where Gass was asked to make a wish for his birthday and responded, “Don’t miss Trump next time.”
“The line I improvised onstage Sunday night was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake. I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone,” Gass wrote in his apology. “What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgement. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.”
However, just three days later, Gass has now removed the apology post from his Instagram page.
